Part5 : The Woman at the Funeral

I couldn’t stop staring at Rachel’s face.

“That’s Rachel,” I whispered.

My husband looked at me.

“Who?”

“Claire’s best friend.”

Officer Ramirez took the phone from my hand.

“How well do you know her?”

“Not well. She came to the funeral. She said she’d known Claire since college.”

“Did she ever contact you afterward?”

I thought about it.

“Once.”

“When?”

“The day after the funeral.”

“What did she say?”

I remembered the conversation.

Rachel had called me while I was sorting Claire’s belongings.

She’d sounded sympathetic.

She’d asked whether we’d found the letters.

At the time, I hadn’t thought anything of it.

Now, suddenly, the memory felt poisonous.

“She asked if we’d found anything Claire had left for Lily.”

Ramirez’s eyes narrowed.

“Anything specific?”

“No.”

My husband suddenly stood.

“We need to get out of here.”

Ramirez nodded.

“Agreed.”

We moved Lily into a hotel that night under police protection.

But before we left the house, I went upstairs one last time.

I don’t know why.

Maybe instinct.

Maybe something Claire had planted in my mind without me realizing it.

I opened Lily’s closet.

Behind a row of old sweaters was a small wooden box.

The same kind of box Claire had sent us.

My heart stopped.

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

If Rachel comes looking for this, don’t trust her.

I ran downstairs.

“Officer!”

He took the drive immediately.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know.”

He examined the note.

“Where did you find this?”

“Lily’s closet.”

My husband stared at it.

“Claire hid that?”

“I think so.”

Ramirez called someone from the cybercrime unit.

Within an hour, the drive had been opened.

There were dozens of files.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

Hospital records.

Phone logs.

And finally, a video.

Claire appeared on screen.

She looked exhausted.

Her face was thinner than I’d remembered.

But she was alive.

Lily immediately started crying.

“Mom…”

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, I’m probably dead.”

She paused.

“I need you to know something.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t abandon you because I stopped loving you.”

Lily covered her mouth.

“I left because Rachel told me Daniel was coming back.”

My husband stiffened.

Claire continued.

“Rachel said she could protect Lily if I disappeared.”

I whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Claire looked down.

“I believed her.”

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“But Rachel was lying.”

The video continued.

“She wasn’t protecting Lily from Daniel.”

“She was helping him find her.”

Lily grabbed my hand.

Claire’s voice trembled.

“I discovered the truth six months ago. Rachel had been communicating with Daniel for years.”

The screen showed screenshots of messages.

Rachel:

She’s still with Emily.

Daniel:

Does the girl know about me?

Rachel:

No.

Daniel:

Good. Keep it that way.

Another message appeared.

Rachel:

Claire suspects something.

Daniel:

Then make sure she doesn’t talk.

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then another file opened automatically.

It was an audio recording.

Rachel’s voice.

“Claire, you don’t understand. Daniel isn’t the problem.”

A man’s voice replied:

“Then who is?”

Rachel answered:

“The girl.”

My stomach dropped.

Lily whispered:

“Why would I be the problem?”

The recording continued.

Rachel said:

“Because she inherited everything.”

My husband looked confused.

“Inherited what?”

The audio went silent for several seconds.

Then Rachel said:

“The account.”

My husband suddenly stood.

“What account?”

Claire’s voice answered from the recording.

“The one Daniel spent twenty years trying to find.”

Ramirez stopped the audio.

“What account?”

My husband looked at me.

Then at Lily.

And finally he said:

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“What was?”

He took a shaky breath.

“An offshore account Claire’s father opened before he died.”

Ramirez frowned.

“How much money?”

My husband stared at Lily.

“Twenty-three million dollars.”

The room went silent.

Lily’s face went blank.

“I don’t understand.”

“Neither did I,” my husband said. “Claire’s father put everything in trust for his granddaughter.”

Ramirez looked at the documents.

“That’s why they’re after her.”

I shook my head.

“But she’s fourteen. She can’t access it.”

“Not yet,” Ramirez said.

“Then why now?”

He looked at the date on the screen.

“Because someone has just changed the trust.”

He zoomed in.

The beneficiary had been changed.

From Lily Carter…

to Daniel Mercer.

And the authorization had been signed using Claire’s identity.

My husband whispered:

“Claire would never do that.”

Ramirez looked at him.

“No.”

He pointed at the signature.

“She didn’t.”

I stared at the screen.

“Then who did?”

Before anyone could answer, every light in the hotel room went out.

The door handle slowly began to turn.

And from the hallway came Rachel’s voice.

“Lily?”

A pause.

“Your mother wanted you to know the truth.”

Then the door began to open.
