Part 6 : The Door

The door opened an inch.

I pulled Lily behind me.

Officer Ramirez drew his weapon and motioned for everyone to stay back.

“Rachel,” he called. “Step away from the door.”

Silence.

Then Rachel laughed softly.

“You always were suspicious, Detective.”

Ramirez’s expression changed.

“You know me?”

“I know more about you than you think.”

The door opened another inch.

Then suddenly—

BANG!

Someone slammed into it from the other side.

Ramirez shoved his shoulder against the frame.

“Back!”

My husband grabbed Lily and pulled her toward the bathroom.

Another impact shook the door.

Rachel screamed from the hallway.

“You’re making a terrible mistake!”

Ramirez shouted to hotel security.

Seconds later, there were footsteps running down the corridor.

Then silence.

When Ramirez finally opened the door, Rachel was gone.

But something had been left behind.

A small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Claire and Rachel together many years ago.

On the back, someone had written:

The truth began before Lily was born.

We spent the rest of the night at the police station.

At dawn, Ramirez returned with new information.

“We found Rachel.”

My husband stood immediately.

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

“Did she get away?”

“No.”

For the first time all night, I breathed.

But Ramirez wasn’t finished.

“She was carrying a passport under another name.”

“What name?”

He looked at Lily.

“Claire Mercer.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

“She used my mother’s name?”

“Not exactly.”

He placed the passport on the table.

The photograph wasn’t Rachel.

It was Claire.

But the name underneath was different.

Elena Mercer.

My husband stared at it.

“That’s Claire’s middle name.”

Ramirez nodded.

“Rachel has been using Claire’s identity for years.”

“Why?”

“We’re still figuring that out.”

Then he placed another document on the table.

A birth certificate.

I looked at it.

And my heart stopped.

The mother’s name was Claire Mercer.

The father’s name was blank.

The child’s name was…

Rachel Mercer.

I looked at my husband.

“Rachel was Claire’s daughter?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Ramirez corrected him.

“Half-sister.”

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

“Claire had an older half-sister. Rachel. Their father was the same man.”

My mind raced.

“Then why did Claire call her her best friend?”

“Because Rachel raised her.”

Lily looked confused.

“Raised her?”

Ramirez nodded.

“Claire’s mother died when Claire was young. Rachel was eighteen. She became Claire’s guardian.”

My husband slowly sat down.

“So Rachel wasn’t Claire’s friend.”

“No.”

“She was family.”

“And apparently,” Ramirez said, “she’s been obsessed with that trust fund for decades.”

I looked at Lily.

“Why wait fourteen years?”

Ramirez opened another file.

“Because the money doesn’t belong to Lily yet.”

He pointed to a clause.

“She gets control when she turns eighteen.”

Lily swallowed.

“That’s in four years.”

“Exactly.”

My husband suddenly remembered something.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

“Claire wasn’t supposed to have surgery.”

“What?”

“She had another operation scheduled first.”

Ramirez frowned.

“When?”

“Six weeks before she died.”

My husband shook his head.

“She canceled it.”

“Why?”

“She told me she was afraid.”

I felt a chill.

“Afraid of surgery?”

“No.”

He looked at us.

“She said someone was trying to kill her.”

The room went silent.

Ramirez pulled out Claire’s medical records.

“Her final surgery was performed at a different hospital.”

“Why?”

“Because she changed hospitals two days before the operation.”

My husband stared at the paperwork.

“Who recommended the new hospital?”

Ramirez checked the file.

Then his expression hardened.

“Rachel.”

I closed my eyes.

Claire hadn’t died on the operating table by accident.

At least, not necessarily.

Someone may have wanted her dead.

Someone who knew exactly where she would be.

Someone who had access to her medical records.

Someone who had been standing beside her grave…

smiling.

Then Ramirez’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked directly at Lily.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The hospital just called.”

“What happened?”

“They reviewed Claire’s surgical records.”

He paused.

“There was something wrong with the anesthesia.”

My heart stopped.

“How wrong?”

Ramirez looked at us.

“Enough to suggest someone deliberately caused the overdose.”

Lily whispered:

“Someone killed my mother?”

Ramirez didn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment, a message appeared on his phone.

A number with no name.

You finally figured it out.

Then another message arrived.

But you’re looking for the wrong killer.

And a third:

Ask Emily what she did the day Claire called.

I stared at the screen.

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly…

I realized the messages weren’t accusing my husband.

They weren’t accusing Rachel.

They were accusing me.
