The word hung in the room.
Government.
I stared at Michael.
“You expect me to believe the government has been protecting Daniel?”
“Not the government.”
He shook his head.
“People inside it.”
Another shot shattered the window.
Michael pulled us away from the glass.
“There’s a basement.”
We followed him down a narrow staircase.
At the bottom was a steel door.
Michael entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside was a room filled with filing cabinets, computers, and old photographs.
Lily stared.
“What’s all this?”
“The truth.”
Michael locked the door behind us.
He walked to a cabinet marked:
MERCER — CLASSIFIED
and pulled out a file.
“I’ve spent twenty-five years collecting this.”
He opened it.
The first document was my mother’s death certificate.
I frowned.
“This says she died in 2004.”
Michael nodded.
“She did.”
“But you said she created the trust.”
“She did.”
“Then how?”
Michael looked at me.
“She created it before she died.”
I turned the page.
There was a handwritten statement.
My mother’s handwriting.
If you’re reading this, Daniel has found the trust.
Emily must never know the truth until Lily is eighteen.
The trust must remain hidden.
Protect my daughter.
Protect my granddaughter.
My eyes filled with tears.
“She knew.”
Michael nodded.
“She knew Daniel would come after both of you.”
Lily touched the page.
“Why didn’t she tell Mom?”
“Because she believed ignorance would keep Emily safe.”
I laughed sadly.
“So everyone lied.”
Michael didn’t disagree.
Then he opened another file.
This one contained photographs of Daniel meeting officials.
Money transfers.
Secret meetings.
Names of people who had helped him.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
Senator Thomas Vale.
I recognized it.
“That’s impossible.”
Michael looked at me.
“Why?”
“He’s the man who signed Daniel’s arrest warrant.”
Michael shook his head.
“That was theater.”
He opened another document.
It showed a payment made two weeks earlier.
From a government account.
To a private company.
And the recipient was:
Thomas Vale.
Lily frowned.
“Who is he?”
Michael looked at her.
“The man who has been controlling Daniel from the beginning.”
I felt cold.
“Then why did Daniel seem like the mastermind?”
“Because he was useful.”
Michael closed the file.
“Daniel was never at the top.”
A voice suddenly came through the basement speakers.
“That’s enough, Michael.”
We froze.
Michael looked toward the ceiling.
A camera was watching us.
The voice continued.
“Bring Emily and Lily upstairs.”
Michael whispered:
“Don’t move.”
The steel door began unlocking.
One click.
Then another.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Mom.”
Michael opened a hidden panel in the wall.
“There.”
A narrow tunnel appeared.
“Go.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll slow them down.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Emily, I’ve waited twenty-five years to protect you.”
He smiled.
“Let me do it.”
We entered the tunnel.
Behind us, the steel door exploded inward.
Men in dark suits rushed into the room.
Michael fired.
We ran.
The tunnel led beneath the city.
We emerged into an underground parking garage.
A black SUV waited.
The driver lowered the window.
“Get in.”
I hesitated.
Michael had told us not to trust anyone.
But the driver smiled.
“It’s me.”
Claire.
I opened the door.
“Claire!”
She pulled us inside.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“Michael found the files.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“Then they know.”
“Who?”
She looked at Lily.
“The people who created the trust.”
Lily frowned.
“I thought my grandmother created it.”
“She did.”
“Then who are they?”
Claire looked at me.
“The Mercer family wasn’t the only family involved.”
She took a breath.
“Your mother’s family was part of an organization that has existed for generations.”
“What organization?”
Claire answered quietly:
“The Guardians.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“It’s real.”
She looked at Lily.
“They protect certain families and certain assets.”
“What assets?”
“The trust.”
I stared at her.
“Why would anyone need an organization to protect money?”
Claire shook her head.
“It’s not about money.”
“Then what?”
She handed me a photograph.
It showed my mother standing beside several people.
At the center was Senator Vale.
And beside him…
Daniel.
But the photograph was dated 1978.
I stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Claire nodded.
“Exactly.”
Lily looked at the picture.
“How old was Daniel?”
“Twenty.”
“But he looks exactly the same.”
Claire’s face was grim.
“Because Daniel Mercer wasn’t born in 1958.”
She paused.
“He was born in 1918.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then how is he still alive?”
Claire looked at me.
“That’s the question everyone has been trying to answer.”
The SUV suddenly stopped.
Claire looked in the rearview mirror.
A convoy of black vehicles had surrounded us.
She whispered:
“They found us.”
A man stepped from the lead vehicle.
He wore a dark suit.
No weapon.
No badge.
Just a calm expression.
He approached the driver’s window.
Then he looked directly at Lily.
“Miss Carter.”
Lily stared back.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled.
“My name is Thomas Vale.”
He leaned closer.
“And I’ve come to tell you the truth about your family.”
He paused.
“Your grandmother didn’t create the trust to protect you.”
He smiled.
“She created it to contain you.”
