Nobody spoke.
The elderly woman stood beneath the church lights, perfectly calm.
I stared at her.
“Margaret Carter.”
She nodded.
“My mother?”
“No.”
She smiled faintly.
“Your grandmother.”
My knees nearly gave out.
“My grandmother died before I was born.”
“That’s what I wanted everyone to believe.”
Lily stepped forward.
“Why?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Because I discovered what the Guardians were really protecting.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Margaret looked at him.
“And you should have stayed in prison.”
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
Michael lowered his weapon.
“Grandmother?”
Margaret nodded.
“Michael.”
He stared at her.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I needed you to.”
“Why?”
“Because you were the only one I could trust.”
Michael’s eyes filled with tears.
“You let me mourn you.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel was hunting everyone who knew the truth.”
She looked at Lily.
“Especially her.”
Lily frowned.
“What truth?”
Margaret walked toward her.
“The Mercer fortune was never the real inheritance.”
She touched the silver pendant around Sophie’s neck.
“The real inheritance is genetic.”
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret looked at both girls.
“The women in our family carry a rare genetic trait.”
Daniel interrupted.
“Enough.”
Margaret ignored him.
“For generations, the Guardians protected families who possessed it.”
“Why?”
“Because it gives them an extraordinary ability to resist a particular neurological disease.”
I frowned.
“That’s it?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Daniel.
“And Daniel discovered how to exploit it.”
Michael stepped forward.
“He was using people.”
“Yes.”
Margaret nodded.
“He built his empire by finding women with the trait, studying their descendants, and selling access to the research.”
Lily looked horrified.
“So the trust…”
“Was created to protect the research from him.”
Margaret took a breath.
“Your mother discovered the truth.”
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“She was the first person who realized Daniel wasn’t trying to steal the money.”
“Then what did he want?”
“Your bloodline.”
Silence.
Daniel suddenly pulled a gun.
“That’s enough.”
Margaret didn’t move.
“You’re too late.”
Daniel aimed at Lily.
“Give me the pendant.”
Sophie stepped backward.
“No.”
Daniel fired.
Michael jumped in front of her.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
“Michael!”
He fell.
Chaos erupted.
Claire grabbed Lily.
I pulled Sophie behind a pew.
Police officers rushed through the church doors.
Daniel ran.
Margaret shouted:
“Don’t let him reach the basement!”
Michael, bleeding heavily, grabbed my wrist.
“Emily.”
“What?”
“Don’t let him destroy the samples.”
“What samples?”
“The original research.”
“Where?”
He pointed beneath the altar.
“Under the church.”
I looked at Margaret.
She nodded.
“That’s where your grandmother hid it.”
I understood.
The entire mystery had been leading here.
The trust.
The Guardians.
Daniel.
The bloodline.
My mother.
Everything.
I lifted the altar cloth.
A metal hatch was hidden underneath.
Lily took the key from her bracelet.
It fit perfectly.
The hatch opened.
Below us was a staircase.
We descended.
At the bottom stood a massive underground laboratory.
Freezers lined the walls.
Hundreds of files filled shelves.
And in the center was a glass case.
Inside was a single vial.
A label read:
CARTER LINE — ORIGINAL SAMPLE
Lily stared at it.
“That’s what they wanted.”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
Then the laboratory doors slammed shut.
Daniel appeared on the other side of the glass.
He smiled.
“You finally understand.”
He held up a detonator.
“Now you get to choose.”
I stared at him.
“Choose what?”
“The research.”
He pointed at the laboratory.
“Save it…”
Then he looked at Lily.
“…or save yourselves.”
A timer appeared on the wall.
02:59
02:58
02:57
Margaret looked at me.
“Emily.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the glass case.
“There’s one thing Daniel doesn’t know.”
“What?”
She smiled.
“The sample isn’t what he thinks it is.”
The timer continued counting down.
02:31
02:30
Margaret whispered:
“It’s not a cure.”
I stared at her.
“Then what is it?”
She looked at Lily.
“It’s the reason Daniel has been afraid of our family for nearly a century.”
The timer reached:
02:00
And Margaret finally told us the truth.
The bloodline wasn’t protecting people from the disease.
It was protecting them from something Daniel had created.
