Part 36 : The Empty House

We drove home without speaking.

Nobody believed the message.

Nobody wanted to.

But when we turned onto our street, I knew something was wrong.

Our front door was open.

The porch light was on.

And Lily’s bedroom window was shattered.

Michael raised his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

We entered slowly.

The house looked untouched.

Too untouched.

No furniture overturned.

No broken glass except the window.

No sign of a struggle.

Then Lily stopped.

“Mom.”

She pointed toward the kitchen table.

A photograph lay there.

It showed Claire.

But not the Claire we knew.

She was much younger.

Standing inside a laboratory.

Beside Eleanor.

And between them was a baby.

Lily.

My hands began shaking.

On the back was a date.

August 21, 2008.

The day Lily was born.

I looked at my mother.

“Why would Claire have a picture of Lily as a baby?”

My mother didn’t answer.

Then we heard a noise upstairs.

A door creaked.

Michael signaled for us to stay downstairs.

He went up.

A moment later, he called:

“Emily!”

We ran upstairs.

Michael stood outside Lily’s bedroom.

Inside, everything had been emptied.

Her books.

Her clothes.

Her photographs.

Even the old stuffed bear she’d had since childhood.

Gone.

On the wall, someone had written:

SHE REMEMBERS NOW.

Lily stared at the words.

“Who?”

A voice answered from behind us.

“I do.”

We turned.

Claire stood at the end of the hallway.

She looked exhausted.

And terrified.

Lily ran toward her.

“Claire!”

Claire stepped backward.

“Don’t.”

Lily stopped.

“Why?”

Claire looked at me.

“Because I finally remember.”

“Remember what?”

Claire touched her head.

“Everything.”

She sat down against the wall.

“I was Subject Zero.”

Silence.

My mother closed her eyes.

Claire continued.

“Eleanor took me when I was sixteen.”

“Why?”

“Because I had the genetic resistance.”

She looked at Lily.

“Then she used me to create the first successful treatment.”

I stared at her.

“You were the original experiment.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Lily was the first child born after the treatment was stabilized.”

I felt sick.

“That’s why Daniel wanted her.”

Claire nodded.

“And why Eleanor never stopped looking for her.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Then why did Claire disappear?”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Because I didn’t.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The woman who called Emily before my surgery…”

She looked at me.

“Wasn’t me.”

My heart stopped.

“The woman who died on the operating table?”

Claire shook her head.

“She wasn’t me either.”

Lily whispered:

“Then where were you?”

Claire pointed toward the photograph.

“With Eleanor.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because she promised me something.”

“What?”

“She promised she could remove the treatment from my body.”

“And did she?”

“No.”

Claire looked at Lily.

“She lied.”

Then she pulled something from her pocket.

A small silver key.

“The treatment isn’t in my blood anymore.”

She looked at me.

“It’s in yours.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Claire nodded.

“When Emily signed the trust, the system transferred the final genetic sequence to her.”

My mother suddenly understood.

“That’s why the system recognized her as Subject One.”

Claire nodded.

“Eleanor didn’t want Lily.”

She looked at me.

“She wanted you.”

The house went silent.

Then the front door slammed downstairs.

Michael drew his weapon.

“We have company.”

A man’s voice echoed through the house.

“Emily.”

I recognized it immediately.

Daniel.

But he was supposed to be imprisoned.

Michael looked at me.

“Stay here.”

Daniel’s voice came again.

“You’ve been chasing the wrong person.”

Footsteps climbed the stairs.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then Daniel appeared.

But he wasn’t alone.

Eleanor stood beside him.

And between them was another person.

A young woman.

She looked exactly like Lily.

Same eyes.

Same hair.

Same scar.

Lily stared at her.

“Who is she?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Your sister.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Daniel looked at me.

“Her name is Maya.”

He smiled.

“And unlike Lily…”

He pointed at Maya.

“…she was born with the complete treatment.”

Maya slowly raised her eyes.

And said:

“Mom?”

I froze.

Because I had never seen her before.

But somehow…

I knew her face.

And then Maya whispered:

“I’ve been looking for you for eighteen years.”
