Part 37 : Maya

Nobody moved.

Maya stood beside Eleanor and Daniel, staring at me as though she’d spent her entire life imagining this moment.

“Mom?”

The word hit me harder than any revelation before it.

I shook my head.

“No.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t remember me.”

“I’ve never met you.”

Daniel smiled.

“Technically, you have.”

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?”

He stepped forward.

“Before Lily was born, Eleanor took another embryo.”

My mother went pale.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your daughter.”

I stared at Maya.

“That’s impossible.”

Eleanor interrupted.

“Your mother was pregnant with twins.”

My breath caught.

“Lily wasn’t supposed to be the only baby.”

Claire whispered:

“They separated them.”

Maya looked at Lily.

“We were sisters.”

Lily stepped toward her.

“Are we?”

Maya nodded.

“Identical twins.”

Lily looked at me.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t answer.

My entire world had changed again.

Daniel continued.

“Maya was taken before birth.”

“Why?”

“Because she had the complete genetic sequence.”

My mother shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You know it is.”

“No.”

She pointed at Maya.

“She was never supposed to receive the treatment.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Your mother always believed she could control science.”

She looked at Maya with pride.

“I perfected her.”

Maya’s face hardened.

“You experimented on me.”

“I gave you life.”

“You stole it.”

Eleanor’s smile disappeared.

Lily moved beside Maya.

“Don’t listen to her.”

Maya looked at Lily.

“I’ve spent eighteen years being told you were the reason I was taken.”

Lily frowned.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“They told me you replaced me.”

Lily shook her head.

“I never knew you existed.”

Maya looked at me.

“Neither did you.”

I felt tears fall.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya whispered:

“I know.”

Daniel suddenly raised his gun.

“Enough.”

Michael stepped between us.

“You’ve lost.”

Daniel smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Maya.

“She still has a choice.”

Maya turned toward him.

“What choice?”

“Take the treatment.”

Daniel held out a small vial.

“Become what Eleanor intended.”

Maya stared at it.

“And if I refuse?”

“Then you die.”

Lily stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Maya looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because that’s what they want.”

Maya hesitated.

I stepped toward her.

“You don’t have to prove anything.”

“Mom…”

I stopped.

“Don’t call me that if it hurts.”

She shook her head.

“It doesn’t.”

She looked at me.

“It feels like something I’ve been missing.”

My heart broke.

Then Maya reached for the vial.

Everyone froze.

She took it.

But instead of drinking it, she threw it against the floor.

The vial shattered.

Eleanor screamed.

“No!”

Maya smiled through her tears.

“I’m done being your experiment.”

Daniel raised his gun.

Before he could fire, Michael tackled him.

Claire grabbed Eleanor.

Lily pulled Maya behind her.

Police flooded the house.

Daniel was arrested again.

Eleanor was taken away.

This time, neither fought.

They knew the game was over.

Hours later, we sat together in the hospital.

Maya stared at Lily.

“So…”

Lily smiled.

“Apparently we’re sisters.”

Maya laughed.

“That’s going to take some getting used to.”

“Definitely.”

I sat between them.

Two daughters.

Two lives.

One family that had been torn apart before either girl could understand why.

My mother entered the room.

She looked at Maya.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya studied her.

“For what?”

“For not finding you sooner.”

Maya shook her head.

“You didn’t know.”

“No.”

My mother smiled sadly.

“But I should have.”

Maya reached for her hand.

“Then find me now.”

My mother began to cry.

And for the first time, the family I’d spent my entire life searching for wasn’t a mystery.

It was sitting in front of me.

But there was still one unanswered question.

Why had Maya been created with the complete treatment?

The answer came the following morning.

A doctor entered the room holding a file.

“I need to speak with Emily.”

I stood.

“What’s wrong?”

He looked at Maya.

“Nothing.”

Then he handed me the file.

“It’s about her DNA.”

I opened it.

The first page contained a genetic analysis.

My eyes widened.

“What’s this?”

The doctor looked confused.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

At the bottom of the report was a finding that made my blood run cold:

Maya is not genetically identical to Lily.

I looked at him.

“But they were supposed to be twins.”

“They share your DNA.”

“Then what’s different?”

The doctor pointed to one line.

Maya contains genetic material from an unidentified fourth contributor.

I stared at the report.

“Who?”

He shook his head.

“We don’t know.”

Then Maya quietly spoke from the bed.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

“Before Eleanor took me…”

She swallowed.

“Someone else was there.”

“Who?”

Maya’s eyes filled with fear.

“A man.”

“What man?”

She whispered:

“He told me he was my real father.”

And then she gave me a name I had never heard before.

Gabriel Mercer.
