I drove home without stopping anywhere.
Daniel’s message kept replaying in my mind.
I won’t be the only one who gets hurt.
Who was he protecting?
And why was he suddenly afraid?
When I pulled into my driveway, I noticed a black SUV parked across the street.
My heart began to race.
I stayed inside my car and watched.
The windows were tinted.
No one got out.
After several minutes, the SUV slowly drove away.
I waited another five minutes before entering my house.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
I locked the door behind me and called Margaret.
“I think someone is watching my house.”
“I was afraid you’d say that,” she replied.
“What do you mean?”
There was a pause.
“Evelyn, I received something this morning.”
“What?”
“A copy of a second document.”
My stomach tightened.
“What document?”
“Your medical records.”
I froze.
“Why would anyone have those?”
“I don’t know.”
“But what does that have to do with my will?”
“Everything.”
She explained that someone had apparently been gathering information to argue that I wasn’t mentally competent to manage my own finances.
The plan was becoming clear.
If they couldn’t convince me to change my will, they could try to convince a court that I wasn’t capable of making decisions for myself.
I sat at the kitchen table.
“They’ve been planning this for months.”
“Yes.”
“And the lake…”
“May have been part of it.”
I looked toward the window.
“What should I do?”
“Don’t confront them. Don’t meet them alone. And don’t delete any messages.”
“I won’t.”
After we hung up, I opened my laptop.
I started going through old emails.
There were dozens from Daniel.
Most were ordinary.
Birthday wishes.
Family invitations.
Requests for money.
But then I found something I’d never noticed before.
An email sent from Daniel’s account to Vanessa.
It was dated six weeks before the lake.
The subject line said:
Mom’s House
I opened it.
There were only three sentences.
She won’t change her mind willingly.
We need another way.
Talk to Caleb.
My hands went cold.
I forwarded the email to Margaret.
Then I heard a knock.
Three slow knocks.
I didn’t move.
Another knock.
“Mrs. Carter?”
I recognized the voice.
It was Caleb.
I walked to the door but didn’t open it.
“What do you want?”
“Please let me in.”
“No.”
“Grandma, I’m alone.”
I looked through the peephole.
He was standing there with his hands in his pockets.
No Daniel.
No Vanessa.
Just Caleb.
“I need to tell you something before Dad finds out I’m here.”
I hesitated.
“Tell me through the door.”
He looked toward the street.
Then back at the door.
“Grandma…”
His voice cracked.
“Vanessa knows you found the forged power of attorney.”
My blood ran cold.
“How?”
“She has someone inside the bank.”
I stepped away from the door.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Caleb, you’re going to tell me everything.”
“I will.”
He swallowed.
“But there’s something worse.”
“What?”
He looked directly at the door.
“They didn’t choose the lake because it was convenient.”
He lowered his voice.
“They chose it because there were no cameras on that part of the pier.”
I felt my stomach turn.
“Then how did you know?”
Caleb stared at the floor.
“Because I put a camera there.”
Silence.
I couldn’t speak.
He continued.
“I was supposed to record you agreeing to give Dad control of your finances.”
“But you recorded the whole thing.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I knew what they were planning.”
I opened the door.
Caleb looked at me.
For the first time, he didn’t look like the boy who had pushed me.
He looked terrified.
He handed me a tiny memory card.
“This is everything.”
I took it.
“What am I going to see?”
He shook his head.
“You’re going to see why Dad was so desperate.”
Before I could ask another question, his phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
“It’s Dad.”
I stared at him.
“Don’t answer.”
But Caleb had already pressed the button.
He listened for three seconds.
Then his face changed.
“Grandma…”
“What?”
“He knows I’m here.”
And from somewhere outside the house, a car door slammed.
