Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.
“Are you sure this is going to work?”
Caleb answered quietly.
“Dad said it would.”
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“Your father has no idea what he’s doing.”
I leaned closer to the screen.
The video showed the same pier.
But it had been recorded several days before the incident.
Vanessa was standing beside Daniel.
Neither of them knew Caleb had hidden a camera nearby.
Daniel held a folder in his hands.
“I told you,” he said. “She’ll never sign it.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Then we make her think she has no choice.”
“What about the lake?”
Daniel hesitated.
“What about it?”
“You said it would scare her.”
“It will.”
“And if something goes wrong?”
Daniel looked away.
“Nothing is going to happen.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“That’s not what I asked.”
There was silence.
Then Daniel said something that made my entire body go cold.
“If she dies, we have a bigger problem.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“I thought you said you weren’t going to hurt her.”
“I said I wasn’t going to kill her.”
My hand flew to my mouth.
I stopped the video.
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
Then I pressed play again.
Vanessa’s voice returned.
“Your mother has life insurance, doesn’t she?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“She does, right?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Half a million.”
I felt sick.
They weren’t just after my house.
They weren’t just after my savings.
They had discussed my death.
I paused the video again and immediately called Margaret.
She answered almost instantly.
“Evelyn?”
“I have it.”
“Have what?”
“The evidence.”
“What kind?”
“Everything.”
I told her what I’d heard.
She became silent.
“Evelyn, listen to me carefully. Do not confront them.”
“I won’t.”
“Do not tell Daniel that you have the recording.”
“I won’t.”
“And don’t leave your house alone.”
I looked toward the front window.
“Margaret…”
“Yes?”
“What if they already know?”
Before she could answer, I heard something outside.
A car engine.
I looked through the curtains.
The black SUV was back.
But this time, it wasn’t across the street.
It was parked directly in front of my house.
Margaret heard the silence.
“What happened?”
“Someone’s outside.”
“Call the police.”
I reached for my phone.
Then my front door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Someone was trying to open it.
I stepped backward.
The handle stopped.
A few seconds passed.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Caleb.
Grandma, leave through the back door now.
I stared at it.
Another message came.
I found out who the person at the bank is.
My heart pounded.
It’s Vanessa’s brother.
Then another message.
And Grandma… he’s not working alone.
I looked at the front door.
The handle moved again.
This time, harder.
I grabbed my coat.
And as I headed toward the back door, I heard Daniel’s voice outside.
“Mom, open the door.”
I didn’t answer.
Then he shouted something that made me stop.
“Because if you don’t, you’re going to regret what happens next.”
I opened the back door.
And someone was standing in my garden.
Waiting for me.
