Part9 : MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON

Caleb drove faster.

The road ahead was nearly empty, but the three vehicles behind us stayed close.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“A place Dad doesn’t know about.”

“Does anyone know we’re coming?”

“Grandma, I didn’t tell anyone.”

“Good.”

My hands were trembling.

I looked at the rear window again.

The black SUV was still there.

Then one of the other cars pulled into the opposite lane.

Caleb noticed.

“They’re trying to pass us.”

“Don’t let them.”

“I know.”

He turned sharply onto a narrow side road.

The SUV followed.

My phone rang again.

Margaret.

I answered.

“Where are you now?”

I told her.

“Listen to me,” she said. “I’ve contacted the authorities. Stay somewhere public and don’t separate from Caleb.”

I nodded.

Then the call dropped.

The road opened onto a small town.

Caleb pulled into a crowded gas station and stopped beside the building.

“Stay here,” he said.

“Absolutely not.”

“Grandma, I’m going to get someone to help us.”

“You’re not leaving me alone.”

He looked at me.

For the first time, I saw the nineteen-year-old boy underneath all the fear.

“I almost killed you,” he whispered.

I didn’t know what to say.

“I know.”

“I thought it was just a prank.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t think Dad would let it go that far.”

I reached for his hand.

“But you came back.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I couldn’t live with what I did.”

Before I could answer, sirens sounded in the distance.

Caleb looked toward the road.

Two police cars turned into the gas station.

The black SUV suddenly accelerated away.

The other vehicles followed.

One police car took off after them.

The other pulled beside us.

A woman officer approached the driver’s window.

“Are you Evelyn Carter?”

“Yes.”

She looked relieved.

“Your attorney contacted us.”

I finally exhaled.

For the first time in days, I felt safe.

But that feeling lasted less than a minute.

The officer opened her notebook.

“Mrs. Carter, there’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“We found Daniel.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“At your house.”

I stared at her.

“He was arrested?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He was found unconscious.”

I looked at Caleb.

“What happened?”

“We don’t know yet,” she said.

“But there was a note.”

“What did it say?”

She hesitated.

Then handed me a photograph.

The note was written on a piece of paper lying beside Daniel.

There were only seven words.

I warned you. You should have listened.

My stomach tightened.

“Who wrote it?”

“We don’t know.”

I looked at Caleb.

He shook his head.

“I didn’t.”

I believed him.

The officer continued.

“We also found something else.”

“What?”

“A second phone.”

“Whose?”

She looked at me.

“We believe it belonged to Vanessa.”

I stared at her.

“But Vanessa wasn’t at the house.”

“We know.”

“Where is she?”

The officer didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“She disappeared this afternoon.”

Silence filled the car.

I thought about the forged documents.

The insurance policy.

The recording.

The man in my garden.

Daniel lying unconscious.

And Vanessa missing.

This wasn’t over.

Not even close.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

One message.

You trusted the wrong grandson.

I looked at Caleb.

He saw the message.

His face turned white.

“Grandma…”

“What?”

He stared at the screen.

“I know that number.”

“Whose is it?”

He whispered the name.

And when he said it, I realized the person behind everything had been much closer to our family than any of us had imagined.
