Part13 : MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON

I read the sentence again.

Your husband didn’t die naturally.

My hands began to shake.

For twenty years, I had believed my husband had died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness.

I had held his hand that night.

I had watched the color leave his face.

I had kissed his forehead.

And now this woman was telling me that everything I believed about his death was a lie.

I looked at Margaret.

She unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was neat and careful.

I know what Arthur did.

I know what your husband discovered.

And I know why your family has been trying to take control of your finances.

My heart pounded.

Margaret continued.

Your husband kept evidence because he knew he was in danger. He trusted the wrong people, but before he died, he realized the truth.

There was one more page.

At the bottom was an address.

And a phone number.

I looked at Margaret.

“Call her.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because we don’t know if this letter is genuine.”

I frowned.

“She knew my husband.”

“That doesn’t mean she can be trusted.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Eleanor stood beside my husband.

Arthur was nowhere in sight.

“Then how do we find out?”

Margaret pointed toward the USB drive.

“Your husband may have left the answer there.”

We found a computer.

The drive contained only one folder.

Inside were dozens of files.

Most were financial records.

Dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

Names.

Then I saw one file titled:

FOR EVELYN

I clicked it.

A video appeared.

My husband sat in front of the camera.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Afraid.

I covered my mouth.

“Evelyn,” he said, “if you’re watching this, then I didn’t get the chance to tell you everything.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to protect you.”

He paused.

“But protecting you meant lying to you.”

He explained that he had discovered Arthur was moving money through several companies.

Money that didn’t belong to him.

Money belonging to clients and business partners.

My husband had confronted him.

Arthur threatened him.

Then my husband made the mistake of telling Daniel.

I looked at Margaret.

She shook her head slowly.

The video continued.

“Daniel was young. He didn’t understand what he was getting involved in.”

I whispered, “Oh, Daniel.”

My husband looked directly into the camera.

“If anything happens to me, Arthur will try to control Evelyn’s assets.”

He was right.

He had predicted everything.

Then he said something that made me sit upright.

“There is one person Arthur is afraid of.”

The screen went black for a moment.

Then my husband’s voice returned.

“Eleanor.”

I stared at the screen.

“Eleanor knows where the money came from.”

The video ended.

No explanation.

No final message.

Just silence.

I looked at Margaret.

“We have to find her.”

“I agree.”

Before we could leave, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“This is Eleanor.”

I stood perfectly still.

“How did you get my number?”

“Your husband gave it to me.”

My heart pounded.

“But that was twenty years ago.”

“I know.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because Arthur found me once.”

I looked at Margaret.

“Are you safe?”

“For now.”

“Then why did you contact me?”

There was silence.

Then Eleanor said:

“Because I know where the twelve million dollars went.”

I gripped the phone.

“Where?”

She took a shaky breath.

“Your husband didn’t steal it.”

“Then who did?”

Her answer was barely audible.

“Arthur.”

I closed my eyes.

“And he didn’t keep it for himself.”

“Where is it?”

Another pause.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Your grandson has it.”

I looked at Caleb.

He was standing across the room.

His face went completely white.

And I knew immediately that whatever happened next would change everything.
