For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
Vanessa was alive.
And she was with Daniel.
I looked at Caleb.
“Your mother is with your father.”
He stared at me.
“But she disappeared.”
“She didn’t disappear.”
“Then where is she?”
I looked at Margaret.
“We need to find them.”
Margaret was already reaching for her phone.
“We’ll let the authorities handle that.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I know that look.”
“I can’t sit here while my family is in danger.”
“Evelyn, this is exactly why you need to let the police handle it.”
I nodded reluctantly.
But then Caleb spoke.
“I know where Dad would take her.”
We both turned toward him.
“Where?”
“There was an old warehouse my grandfather used.”
Margaret frowned.
“Address?”
Caleb gave it to her.
She immediately made the call.
While we waited, I kept thinking about the account.
The money.
The wooden box.
My husband’s final message.
Everything had been connected for twenty years.
And I had never known.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text from Daniel.
Mom, don’t come here.
Another message followed.
Arthur has the keys.
Then:
He knows about Caleb.
I looked at Margaret.
“Tell the police to hurry.”
Minutes later, we were on our way.
When we arrived near the warehouse, several police vehicles were already parked nearby.
The building looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusty doors.
No lights.
An officer raised a hand.
“Stay here.”
I nodded.
Then we heard shouting from inside.
A man’s voice.
Arthur.
“You should have listened to me!”
Then Daniel screamed.
“Leave my son alone!”
My heart stopped.
Caleb tried to run toward the building.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“But Dad—”
“Wait.”
A loud crash came from inside.
Then silence.
The officers moved in.
We waited.
One minute.
Two.
Three.
Finally, someone shouted:
“Clear!”
I ran inside.
Daniel was sitting against a wall.
Vanessa was beside him, crying.
Arthur was on the floor in handcuffs.
But Caleb wasn’t there.
I looked around.
“Where is my grandson?”
Daniel pointed toward a back hallway.
“He went after him.”
My blood ran cold.
“After who?”
“Arthur’s associate.”
“What associate?”
Daniel looked terrified.
“The man who has the money.”
I turned toward the hallway.
Before anyone could stop me, I ran.
At the end was a metal door.
It was open.
Beyond it was a narrow staircase leading underground.
I heard Caleb’s voice.
“Grandma!”
I ran down the stairs.
At the bottom, I found him standing beside a steel cabinet.
In his hand was a small wooden box.
The same box my husband had given him twenty years ago.
He looked at me.
“I found it.”
I stepped closer.
“What’s inside?”
He opened the box.
There was a key.
A handwritten note.
And a bank card.
I picked up the note.
My husband’s handwriting.
Only three words:
Trust yourself, Evelyn.
I started crying.
Then Caleb pointed at the bank card.
“Grandma…”
“What?”
“Look at the name.”
I turned it over.
The account wasn’t in Caleb’s name.
It wasn’t in my husband’s name.
It wasn’t in anyone’s name we recognized.
It was under the name:
Eleanor Bell.
I stared at it.
“Eleanor.”
Caleb nodded.
“She was telling the truth.”
Then we heard footsteps behind us.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone was coming down the stairs.
I turned around.
A man stood at the top.
Not Arthur.
Not Daniel.
Not anyone I recognized.
He smiled.
“You finally found it.”
Caleb stepped in front of me.
The man looked at him.
“You really are your grandfather’s grandson.”
I tightened my grip around the wooden box.
“Who are you?”
He smiled again.
“I’m the person your husband was trying to protect you from.”
And then he closed the metal door behind him.
