Part17 : MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON

We ran until the police lights disappeared behind us.

Caleb kept looking over his shoulder.

“Grandma, where are we going?”

“I don’t know yet.”

That was the truth.

For seventy-one years, I had believed that knowing where I was going was the same thing as being safe.

That night taught me otherwise.

We reached an old roadside motel and stopped.

The manager barely looked up when I paid cash.

No questions.

No names.

No identification.

Just a room with two beds and a broken lamp.

It was perfect.

Once the door was locked, Caleb sat on the edge of the bed.

“We can’t stay here.”

“We won’t.”

“What about Victor?”

“I don’t know.”

“And the police?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked at the wooden box.

“What are we going to do with that?”

I placed it on the table.

“We’re going to find out what your grandfather wanted me to know.”

I opened it again.

The bank card was still there.

So was the key.

And beneath them, I found something I hadn’t noticed before.

A folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

There was an address.

Nothing else.

Caleb looked at it.

“That’s not a bank.”

“No.”

“What is it?”

I recognized the street.

It was an old building near the river.

My husband had taken me there once, years ago.

He had told me it was an office he used for “private business.”

I had never asked questions.

Now I wished I had.

The next morning, we went there.

The building looked abandoned.

But the key from the box fit the front door.

Inside was a small office covered in dust.

Caleb searched the shelves.

I searched the desk.

Then I found a locked drawer.

The key opened it.

Inside was a thick envelope.

My name was written across the front.

EVELYN.

I opened it.

There were copies of bank records.

Photographs.

Contracts.

And one handwritten letter.

This time, my husband’s words weren’t calm.

They were desperate.

Evelyn,

If you’re reading this, then Arthur has failed to keep this hidden.

The money was never stolen by me.

I discovered that Arthur had been using my company to move money belonging to other people. When I tried to stop him, he threatened our family.

I moved what I could into a protected trust.

The trust was placed under Caleb’s name because I knew no one would suspect him.

I looked at my grandson.

He stared at the letter.

“My whole life…”

“Yes.”

“He knew?”

“He knew you might someday need protection.”

Caleb swallowed.

Then I read the final paragraph.

But the money cannot remain hidden forever. There is one condition.

I turned the page.

The next sentence made me stop.

The person who receives the money must first prove that the original victims can be compensated.

Caleb frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Then I found another document.

A list of names.

Dozens of them.

People who had supposedly lost money through my husband’s company.

At the bottom was a handwritten note:

Find them. Tell them the truth. Return what was taken.

I sat down.

My husband hadn’t hidden the money to make us rich.

He had hidden it so it could eventually be returned.

Then my phone rang.

It was Margaret.

I answered.

“Evelyn, where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“I understand.”

Her voice was unusually quiet.

“I have news.”

“What?”

“Daniel has confessed.”

I closed my eyes.

“To everything?”

“To most of it.”

“What about Vanessa?”

“She has been arrested.”

“And Arthur?”

“Missing.”

I looked at Caleb.

“Is Victor alive?”

Margaret paused.

“Yes.”

I exhaled.

“Can I speak to him?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because he asked for you.”

My heart sank.

“What did he say?”

“He said he knows who ordered the attack on your husband twenty years ago.”

I gripped the phone.

“Who?”

Margaret’s voice dropped.

“Victor says it wasn’t Arthur.”

I stared at the letter in front of me.

“Then who was it?”

Margaret was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“Your husband’s own brother.”

I stopped breathing.

My husband had been an only child.

At least, that was what he had always told me.

And suddenly, another secret—one buried for twenty years—was beginning to surface.
