PART 4 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

I stared at the photograph for what felt like hours.

The woman holding the baby looked familiar.

Not because I recognized her face.

But because something about her expression felt like something I had seen before.

The sadness.

The fear.

The way she held that child like she already knew someone was going to take her away.

My fingers traced the edge of the picture.

“This is impossible.”

Karen sat across from me.

“I said the same thing.”

I looked at the back of the photograph again.

The date.

The hospital.

The city.

Everything was wrong.

“My whole life, Dad told me I was born at St. Mary’s Hospital.”

Karen nodded.

“That’s what my birth certificate says too.”

I looked at her.

“And yours?”

She slowly shook her head.

“That’s the problem.”

“What do you mean?”

She reached into her bag and pulled out a folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Old hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Something I never thought I would see.

Evidence that my entire childhood was built on a lie.

“I found these hidden behind the wall in Mom’s closet.”

I looked at her.

“Behind the wall?”

She nodded.

“Dad had a small safe installed years ago. Mom knew about it.”

“Why would she hide things from us?”

Karen looked down.

“Because she wasn’t hiding things from us.”

She looked up.

“She was hiding things from him.”

A cold silence filled the room.

My father.

The man everyone thought was kind.

The man everyone in our neighborhood described as generous.

The man who volunteered at church every Sunday.

Had a secret room.

A hidden safe.

A hidden life.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a medical record.

My eyes moved across the page.

Patient:

Elizabeth Harper

My breath caught.

“Elizabeth?”

Karen nodded.

“That was your biological mother’s name.”

I looked at the record.

There was a hospital stamp.

But it wasn’t the hospital from the photograph.

It was the same city.

The same date.

But a different hospital.

Then I saw the name of the baby.

My hands froze.

Because it wasn’t my name.

It wasn’t Karen’s name.

It was another name entirely.

“Karen…”

She leaned closer.

“What?”

I pointed at the page.

“Who is this?”

Her face changed.

I knew immediately.

She recognized it.

“Tell me.”

Karen swallowed.

“That’s the name Dad erased.”

My heartbeat became louder.

“Erased?”

She nodded.

“Before you and I were brought home, there was another record.”

“Another baby?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the paper again.

The name written there was:

Amelia Rose Carter.

I shook my head.

“That’s not me.”

“No.”

“Then who is Amelia?”

Karen looked terrified.

“That’s what we need to find out.”

My husband finally spoke.

“Karen…”

She turned toward him.

“You didn’t tell her everything either?”

His face tightened.

“I didn’t know about Amelia.”

Karen looked away.

“Because I never found that page.”

I stood up.

“Wait.”

Both of them looked at me.

“So let me understand this.”

I pointed at the documents.

“My father took me from my real mother.”

“Yes.”

“And he changed records.”

“Yes.”

“And now we’re finding out there was another baby involved?”

Karen nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

I laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

“My entire life is a mystery.”

Nobody answered.

Because they knew it was true.

I grabbed my coat.

“Where are we going?”

Karen looked surprised.

“Where?”

“To my childhood home.”

Her eyes widened.

“That house was sold years ago.”

“I don’t care.”

“There’s nothing there.”

I held up the photograph.

“Then why did Dad write that he kept something there?”

Karen became quiet.

Because she knew.

My father had left clues.

And for the first time in my life, I wanted to follow them.

Two hours later, we were standing outside my childhood home.

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

The white paint was faded.

The tree where I used to swing was gone.

The backyard where my father taught me to ride a bicycle was empty.

A stranger lived there now.

I stared at the windows.

Memories flooded back.

Christmas mornings.

Birthday cakes.

Family dinners.

All built on a secret.

Karen touched my arm.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

I nodded.

“I need answers.”

We walked around the house.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Until my husband noticed something.

“Wait.”

He pointed toward the basement window.

“What?”

“That window.”

I looked.

“What about it?”

“It’s newer than the others.”

My heart started beating faster.

Karen stepped closer.

“Dad never renovated the basement.”

We looked at each other.

Then I whispered:

“He built something.”

We waited until the current homeowner agreed to let us look around.

The basement smelled like dust and old wood.

Everything looked normal.

Until Karen found a loose wooden panel behind an old shelf.

She touched it.

“This wasn’t here before.”

My husband pulled the panel away.

Behind it was a small hidden compartment.

Inside was a metal box.

No lock.

No label.

Just my father’s handwriting carved into the top.

Three words.

“For My Daughter.”

My hands shook.

There were two of us standing there.

Two women who thought they knew who they were.

Karen looked at me.

“Open it.”

I slowly lifted the lid.

Inside was a stack of letters.

A hospital bracelet.

And one old newspaper clipping.

I picked up the clipping first.

The headline made my blood turn cold.

“LOCAL WOMAN DISAPPEARS AFTER GIVING BIRTH.”

Below the headline was a photograph.

The woman in the picture…

Was the same woman from my father’s photograph.

My biological mother.

But then I saw the date.

The article was published three days after I was born.

And underneath the headline was one sentence that made my hands go numb.

“Newborn child also missing.”

I looked at Karen.

At my husband.

“No…”

My voice barely came out.

“Dad didn’t just take me.”

Karen whispered:

“What?”

I looked back at the newspaper.

“He took me from my mother…”

I swallowed.

“And then he made everyone believe I never existed.”

But before we could read the rest of the article…

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow…

It felt familiar.

“Are you the daughter of Thomas Carter?”

I froze.

“Yes.”

There was a long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Thank God.”

My heart raced.

“Who is this?”

The woman began crying.

Then she said:

“I’m the woman your father tried to erase.”

The line went silent.

And then she added:

“I’m your mother.”
