PART 7 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

The man standing outside my door looked older than I remembered.

But I knew him.

Everyone in my family knew him.

Richard Mills.

My father’s best friend for more than thirty years.

The man who stood beside him at business meetings.

The man who gave the speech at my father’s funeral.

The man who always told everyone:

“Thomas Carter was a good man.”

But now he stood at my door holding an old wooden box.

And the look on his face told me something.

He didn’t believe that anymore.

“Richard?”

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

He looked at me.

Then at Elizabeth.

His face tightened.

“You found her.”

Elizabeth stared at him.

“You knew?”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer hit me harder than I expected.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another person who had known the truth while I lived my entire life in the dark.

“You knew my mother was alive?”

Richard looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“You knew I was stolen?”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The anger inside me exploded.

“How many people knew?”

Nobody answered.

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone knew except me.”

Richard stepped inside slowly.

“I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.”

I pointed at the box.

“What’s in there?”

He held it tighter.

“Everything your father tried to destroy.”

The room became silent.

Elizabeth looked at the box.

“What did you bring?”

Richard swallowed.

“The truth.”

We gathered around the table.

The same table where I had confronted my husband hours earlier.

The same table where my entire life had fallen apart.

Richard placed the box down.

“My father gave this to me before he died.”

I frowned.

“Your father?”

He nodded.

“My father was Thomas’s attorney.”

Karen looked shocked.

“Your father knew too?”

“Yes.”

Richard opened the box.

Inside were old files.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one small black notebook.

He picked it up carefully.

“This is Thomas’s personal journal.”

My stomach tightened.

“My father kept a journal?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because he knew one day someone would find the truth.”

I stared at the notebook.

A part of me wanted to throw it away.

Another part needed to know.

I opened the first page.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My father’s.

The first entry was dated two weeks before I was born.

“Elizabeth cannot know about the trust.”

I stopped.

Richard looked down.

“He was already planning it before you were born.”

I turned the page.

“If the child is mine, everything changes.”

My heart raced.

I looked at Elizabeth.

“What does that mean?”

She looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

I continued reading.

“The inheritance cannot go to Elizabeth. It cannot go to anyone connected to her family.”

My hands trembled.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He was fighting for control.

I turned another page.

Then I saw something that made me freeze.

A name.

A name I recognized.

Karen Harper.

I looked up.

Karen went pale.

“What?”

“Your name is here.”

She slowly stood.

“No.”

I showed her.

The journal entry.

“If the second child survives, she must never know the arrangement.”

Nobody spoke.

Second child.

My eyes moved back to the words.

Second child.

Not daughter.

Not baby.

Child.

“What arrangement?”

Richard looked away.

And that terrified me.

“Richard.”

He sighed.

“There is something you don’t know.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Apparently there are many things I don’t know.”

He nodded sadly.

“Your father lied about more than your birth.”

I stared at him.

“What else?”

He opened another file.

Inside was a hospital document.

A document with two names.

My name.

And Karen’s.

But the dates…

The dates were different.

I looked closer.

Then my blood ran cold.

Karen’s birth date was the same.

Mine was the same.

But the hospital listed something impossible.

Two babies.

One mother.

One father.

One missing record.

I looked at Karen.

“Wait…”

She looked just as confused.

“Dad didn’t switch us?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The room went silent.

“Then what did he do?”

Richard looked at Elizabeth.

Then at me.

And finally said:

“He didn’t steal one baby.”

A pause.

“He stole both.”

My entire body froze.

“What?”

Richard continued.

“Thomas discovered there were two children involved in the inheritance.”

Karen whispered:

“Two children?”

“Yes.”

“Me and her?”

Richard nodded.

“But he needed one person to control everything.”

I stared at him.

“So he separated us?”

“Yes.”

My hands started shaking.

“For what reason?”

Richard opened the final document.

It was a legal paper.

A trust agreement.

At the bottom was a condition I had never seen before.

“The inheritance shall only transfer when both daughters of Elizabeth Harper are identified and reunited.”

I looked up.

Both daughters.

My mind went blank.

Elizabeth covered her mouth.

“No…”

Karen whispered:

“What?”

Elizabeth looked at us with tears in her eyes.

“There weren’t supposed to be two babies.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“What do you mean?”

She looked terrified.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“When I gave birth…”

Her voice broke.

“The doctor told me I had one daughter.”

A long silence followed.

Then she looked at the document.

“And Thomas knew about the second baby before I did.”

The room went completely still.

Because suddenly the mystery became even bigger.

If Karen and I were not the only children…

Then who was the second daughter?

And why had my father hidden her too?

Before anyone could answer…

Richard’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face instantly changed.

“What?”

I watched his expression turn from confusion…

To fear.

“Who is it?” I asked.

He slowly lowered the phone.

Then whispered:

“It’s your father’s number.”

Nobody moved.

“That’s impossible.”

Richard stared at the screen.

“It’s a voicemail.”

My heart stopped.

“A voicemail from when?”

He looked at the date.

A date five years after my father’s death.

And then he pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

My father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

And the first words he said were:

“If you’re hearing this…”

A pause.

“Then I failed to keep my third daughter hidden.”
