PART 8 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The sound of my father’s voice filled the room like a ghost returning from the past.

A man who had been buried five years ago was suddenly speaking to us.

Warning us.

Confessing.

The recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this…”

A long pause.

“Then I failed to keep my third daughter hidden.”

My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

Third daughter.

The words didn’t make sense.

I looked at Karen.

She looked back at me with the same fear in her eyes.

Elizabeth slowly covered her mouth.

“No…”

Richard looked at her.

“You knew something?”

She shook her head quickly.

“No. I swear I didn’t.”

But her voice sounded different.

Like a memory she had buried was trying to come back.

The recording continued.

“I spent my entire life trying to fix one mistake by creating another.”

My father’s voice cracked.

“I told myself I was protecting my family.”

A bitter silence followed.

“But the truth is…I was protecting myself.”

Everyone looked at each other.

Because for the first time, my father was admitting what we had all suspected.

He wasn’t a hero.

He wasn’t a protector.

He was a man who had made choices.

Terrible choices.

The recording continued.

“The first mistake was taking Amelia.”

My heart stopped hearing my old hidden name.

“The second mistake was separating the sisters.”

Karen grabbed my hand.

Neither of us realized we had done it.

Two women who had spent forty-two years thinking we were strangers connected by a lie.

“We were always sisters,” Karen whispered.

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

The word came out quietly.

Despite everything…

Despite the betrayal…

Despite the pain…

That part was true.

The recording continued.

“But the third mistake…”

My father’s voice became almost impossible to hear.

“Was believing I could hide her forever.”

Richard turned up the volume.

The next sentence made everyone freeze.

“She knows who she is.”

My blood ran cold.

“She has always known.”

I looked around the room.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Or because someone did.

Richard stopped the recording.

“Wait.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“There’s more.”

“Then play it.”

He hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

I stared at him.

“After everything tonight, you’re asking me if I want the truth?”

He looked down.

Then pressed play.

My father’s voice returned.

“I know Amelia and Karen will eventually find this.”

My eyes widened.

“He knew our names.”

“Yes,” Richard whispered.

“He planned this.”

The recording continued.

“But before they learn about her…”

A pause.

“They need to understand why I did what I did.”

I felt anger rising.

“Why?”

The recording answered.

“Because the third daughter was never part of the original plan.”

Elizabeth leaned forward.

“Third daughter?”

My father continued.

“She was born after the hospital records were changed.”

Everyone went silent.

I felt confused.

“After?”

Richard looked at me.

“He’s saying there was another child later.”

The recording continued.

“Her existence was the reason Elizabeth could never know the full truth.”

Elizabeth started crying.

“No…”

My husband stepped closer to her.

“What is it?”

She shook her head.

“I remember something.”

Everyone looked at her.

“After Amelia was taken…”

Her voice trembled.

“I was told my baby died.”

The room went quiet.

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

Elizabeth looked at me.

“They told me I lost my second child.”

Karen whispered:

“Second child?”

Elizabeth nodded.

“I thought it was a mistake.”

Her tears fell.

“But now…”

She looked at the recording.

“Now I think Thomas knew.”

I felt sick.

My father hadn’t only stolen me.

He had taken another child too.

The recording continued.

“I couldn’t protect all three of them.”

My father’s voice became weaker.

“So I made the choice that would cause the least damage.”

I almost laughed.

The least damage?

He destroyed three lives.

The recording continued.

“Amelia was hidden because of the inheritance.”

“Karen was hidden because she knew too much.”

“And my third daughter…”

A pause.

“She was hidden because she was the only one who could expose everything.”

My heart pounded.

“Expose what?”

The recording became silent.

Then my father said:

“The truth about the night Elizabeth gave birth.”

The audio stopped.

Everyone stared at the phone.

Richard looked confused.

“That’s the end.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“That can’t be the end.”

I grabbed the phone.

“There has to be more.”

Richard looked at the file.

“There is another recording.”

My head snapped toward him.

“What?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

Richard swallowed.

“He said the second recording should only be played when all three daughters were together.”

The room froze.

All three daughters.

I looked at Elizabeth.

Then Karen.

Then the empty space around us.

“But we’re not all here.”

Richard nodded.

“I know.”

“Then why do you have it?”

He looked at me.

“Because your father knew something.”

“What?”

He picked up the old black notebook.

“He knew the third daughter would come looking for you.”

My heart started racing.

“Why?”

Richard slowly turned the notebook around.

On the last page was a name.

A name written by my father.

A name none of us recognized.

SOPHIA CARTER

Underneath it were four words.

“She remembers everything.”

I felt a chill move through me.

“Who is Sophia Carter?”

Nobody answered.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

I stared at the screen.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

“You found my sisters. Now find me.”

My hands went cold.

Because whoever sent that message…

Was the daughter my father spent his entire life hiding.
