PART 16 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

For several minutes after the call ended, nobody spoke.

The room felt different.

Not because of another secret.

Not because of another lie.

But because the one person I thought I understood…

Was suddenly a stranger.

Thomas Carter.

The man who raised me.

The man whose last name I carried.

The man whose face appeared in every family photograph.

Was not my biological father.

My entire identity had been built on a name that wasn’t mine.

I looked at Elizabeth.

“Did you know?”

Her face collapsed.

“Amelia…”

“Did you know he wasn’t my father?”

She started crying.

“No.”

“Then who was?”

She looked away.

And that silence told me everything.

“You know.”

Elizabeth didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who was my father?”

Her hands trembled.

“I was afraid.”

“That’s what everyone says.”

My voice broke.

“Everyone was afraid.”

I pointed around the room.

“My father was afraid.”

“Karen was afraid.”

“My husband was afraid.”

“Richard was afraid.”

“And now you’re afraid.”

I looked at Elizabeth.

“But I’m the one who lost my whole life.”

Nobody spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

“His name was Daniel.”

The name hit the room like a shockwave.

Richard immediately looked up.

“Daniel?”

Elizabeth nodded.

“Daniel Harper.”

Karen froze.

“Harper?”

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Karen’s face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.”

I looked between them.

“Why?”

Karen whispered:

“Because Daniel Harper was my father.”

The room went silent.

I stared at Karen.

“Your father?”

She nodded slowly.

“The man I was told died before I was born.”

My head spun.

Another impossible connection.

Another family lie.

Elizabeth looked at Karen.

“I’m sorry.”

Karen stepped back.

“Wait.”

Her voice shook.

“You’re saying…”

She pointed at me.

“That she’s my sister?”

Elizabeth nodded.

“Half-sister.”

Karen looked like she couldn’t breathe.

All this time…

The woman she thought was only her sister through a stolen identity…

Was actually her sister by blood too.

But the question remained.

Why had nobody told us?

Richard opened the old documents again.

“There’s something we need to understand.”

Nobody looked away.

“The trust.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course.”

“The money again.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“This time, it’s not about money.”

He pulled out another page.

“This is the original trust agreement.”

I looked at it.

The paper was old.

But the words were clear.

“The inheritance shall pass to the children of Daniel Harper and Elizabeth Harper.”

I froze.

Children.

Not one.

Not three.

Children.

Richard continued.

“Thomas wasn’t the heir.”

My eyes widened.

“He wasn’t?”

“No.”

“Then why did he care so much?”

Richard looked at the document.

“Because Thomas knew Daniel was the rightful owner.”

I frowned.

“But Daniel died.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The room became quiet.

“What?”

Richard looked at Elizabeth.

“Daniel didn’t die.”

My stomach dropped.

“What are you saying?”

Elizabeth started crying.

“He disappeared.”

“Why?”

She looked at the floor.

“Because Thomas made sure he couldn’t come back.”

I felt sick.

My father had not only stolen me.

He had erased an entire family.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Sophia.

I opened it.

“You finally know about Daniel.”

My heart raced.

I replied:

“How do you know?”

Her response came immediately.

“Because I met him.”

I froze.

My fingers went cold.

I typed:

“Daniel is alive?”

Three dots appeared.

Then:

“Yes.”

Another message followed.

“And he has been looking for you longer than anyone.”

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

“What?”

Karen asked.

I showed them the phone.

Richard’s face changed.

“No.”

“What?”

He stood quickly.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

Richard looked terrified.

“Because Daniel Harper was the reason Thomas changed everything.”

Elizabeth whispered:

“Richard…”

He shook his head.

“No. She needs to know.”

I stared at him.

“Know what?”

Richard looked at the documents.

Then at me.

“Daniel wasn’t just your biological father.”

A pause.

“He was the person Thomas blamed for everything.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

Richard swallowed.

“Because Thomas believed Daniel was going to expose him.”

“Expose him for what?”

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

This time…

It wasn’t Sophia.

It wasn’t Margaret.

It wasn’t unknown.

The caller ID showed a name.

A name I had never seen before.

But everyone else in the room recognized.

Elizabeth gasped.

Karen stepped back.

Richard whispered:

“No…”

I looked at the screen.

The name was:

DANIEL HARPER

My biological father.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who had disappeared.

The man who had been searching for me.

I answered.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

A voice full of emotion.

A voice that sounded like someone who had waited decades.

“Amelia?”

I couldn’t speak.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry it took me forty-two years to find you.”

My eyes filled with tears.

Because for the first time in my life…

A stranger was saying the words I had always wanted to hear.

“I never stopped looking for my daughter.”

Then his voice changed.

Fear replaced emotion.

“Amelia, listen to me.”

“What?”

“Do not trust anyone in that room.”

My heart stopped.

“Why?”

A pause.

Then he said:

“Because the person who betrayed me…”

“He’s still there with you.”

Slowly…

Everyone turned toward Richard.
