Nobody moved.
Not even Richard.
The phone was still against my ear.
Daniel’s warning echoed in my mind.
“The person who betrayed me is still there with you.”
I looked around the room.
My husband.
Karen.
Elizabeth.
Richard.
Everyone had a reason to hide something.
Everyone had lied.
But Richard…
Richard was the one person who always seemed like he was helping us.
The one person who brought the box.
The one person who revealed the documents.
The one person who claimed he wanted the truth.
“Richard…”
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“What is Daniel talking about?”
Richard’s face changed.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Amelia, don’t listen to him.”
Daniel heard that.
His voice became louder through the phone.
“You’re still there, aren’t you?”
Nobody answered.
“Richard Mills.”
The room froze.
Daniel knew his name.
“I know what you did.”
Richard took a step back.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
The words shocked everyone.
Karen stared at him.
“What did you just say?”
Richard looked at the floor.
“I said I didn’t have a choice.”
I felt something inside me break.
Because after everything…
Another person was finally admitting it.
They had choices.
They just chose themselves.
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“Amelia, you need to leave.”
I looked at the door.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
“Anywhere away from Richard.”
Richard suddenly moved toward me.
“Don’t do this.”
My husband stepped between us.
“Stay back.”
Richard stopped.
“I am trying to protect her.”
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.”
Richard looked at me.
“I am.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
He looked away.
And that was the answer.
“You knew Daniel was alive.”
A long silence.
“Yes.”
Karen gasped.
“You knew?”
Richard nodded.
“I found him years ago.”
“Where?”
Richard didn’t answer.
“Where?”
My voice became louder.
“Where was my father?”
Richard finally looked at me.
“In hiding.”
“Because of Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“Because Thomas threatened him?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“No.”
The room went quiet.
“Then why?”
Richard whispered:
“Because Daniel was blamed for something he didn’t do.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Richard walked slowly back to the table.
He looked exhausted.
Like he had carried this secret for too long.
“Thomas and Daniel were business partners.”
I listened carefully.
“They were also brothers-in-law.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“I know.”
Richard continued.
“But they discovered something.”
“What?”
“The inheritance wasn’t the real secret.”
Everyone became silent.
“Then what was?”
Richard looked at the old documents.
“Your grandfather’s company.”
My stomach tightened.
“The company?”
“Yes.”
“What about it?”
Richard took a deep breath.
“Thomas was stealing from it.”
Nobody spoke.
“He had been moving money for years.”
Karen whispered:
“So Daniel found out.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“And he threatened to expose him?”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“So Thomas took me because…”
“Because he needed control.”
Richard continued:
“Your grandfather had left evidence hidden inside the trust documents.”
“Evidence of the theft?”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
My father had destroyed my family to hide a crime.
Not just an inheritance.
A crime.
Daniel interrupted.
“Richard, tell her the rest.”
Richard looked at the phone.
“No.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You owe her the truth.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he said:
“The night Amelia was born…”
Everyone listened.
“Thomas planned to take the documents.”
My heart pounded.
“What documents?”
“The evidence against him.”
“Where were they?”
Richard looked at Elizabeth.
“With Daniel.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel was going to expose Thomas.”
A pause.
“But Thomas discovered Elizabeth was having twins.”
My body froze.
“The twins…”
Richard nodded.
“You and Sophia.”
“So what happened?”
Richard looked at me.
“Thomas created a plan.”
My hands became cold.
“What plan?”
“To use Amelia.”
I felt sick.
“Use me?”
“Yes.”
“He knew the inheritance would only transfer if the children were reunited.”
“Yes.”
“So he separated us.”
“Yes.”
“But why take me?”
Richard looked at the floor.
“Because you carried the one thing Thomas needed.”
I swallowed.
“What?”
Richard opened the final document from the box.
A small folded paper.
He handed it to me.
I opened it.
And saw a sentence written by my grandfather.
“The eldest daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth shall inherit the original evidence.”
My heart stopped.
The evidence.
Not money.
Evidence.
My father had spent forty-two years hiding me because I was carrying the key to destroying him.
But then I noticed something else.
A second line.
One that made my blood run cold.
“If the eldest daughter is ever separated from her sisters, the evidence will be transferred to the fourth child.”
I looked up.
“The fourth child…”
Richard nodded.
“Lydia.”
“But Lydia disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard looked at me.
“Because she was the only one who knew where the evidence was.”
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Lydia.
Not Sophia.
Lydia.
The fourth daughter.
The one who had been missing all along.
The message contained only one sentence:
“Stop looking for the evidence.”
A second message appeared.
“Because I already found it.”
My heart stopped.
Then a final message arrived.
A photograph.
A photo of a document.
A document with my grandfather’s signature.
And beneath it…
A name.
The person who had betrayed the entire family.
Not Thomas.
Not Richard.
Not Elizabeth.
Someone nobody suspected.
Someone who had been controlling the story from the beginning.
The name at the bottom was:
DANIEL HARPER.
My biological father.
