PART 13 – The Winter Account Was Opened at Last, Revealing Money Meant for Restitution and a Final Trap Samuel Had Prepared

The archive became silent after David finished reading Samuel's final instruction.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The words remained in my mind.

Don't ask what you deserve. Ask what belongs to someone else.

I looked at the five checks sitting in Ruiz's evidence folder. Five million dollars each. Money that had seemed miraculous that morning now felt like something dangerous to touch.

Ruiz stepped closer to the desk.

“Where is the Winter account?”

David pointed toward a row of metal drawers.

“Samuel never wrote the account number in full. He split it between three documents.”

Thomas frowned.

“You never told me that.”

“I didn't know until last year.”

David opened the first drawer.

Inside were dozens of envelopes arranged by year.

He removed three.

The first contained a number.

The second contained a series of letters.

The third contained a handwritten phrase.

Winter comes after the harvest.

Daniel stared at them.

“That's the password?”

“No,” David said. “It's the key to finding it.”

He placed the documents side by side.

The numbers seemed meaningless until Michael noticed that each was followed by a date.

June 14.

October 3.

December 21.

He looked at the property records.

“These dates match transfers.”

David nodded.

“Exactly.”

The three transactions led to three different companies, but all three companies had been dissolved years earlier.

Ruiz photographed the pages.

“Can we access the account directly?”

David shook his head.

“Not without the bank.”

Grandma stepped toward the desk.

“There was a bank in Samuel's old correspondence.”

“Northbridge Trust,” I said.

She nodded.

“The same bank named on the checks.”

Ruiz immediately made a call.

While she spoke, Daniel opened another drawer.

“There's something here.”

He pulled out a small envelope.

It had Claire's name on it.

She took it.

Inside was a single photograph of Samuel standing with a little girl.

Claire stared at it.

“That's me.”

Grandma's face softened.

“You were four.”

Claire turned the photograph over.

A message was written across the back.

For the child who was never meant to know why she was chosen.

Claire looked at Grandma.

“Why was I chosen?”

Grandma didn't answer.

Thomas did.

“Because your adoption was part of Samuel's plan.”

Claire stepped backward.

“What?”

Thomas explained that Victor had begun investigating the family's children decades earlier.

Samuel believed one branch of the family needed to be removed from the public records.

Claire had been adopted by the Bennetts after her biological parents disappeared.

Her connection to Thomas's family was deliberately erased.

“But why me?”

David looked at her.

“Because your biological mother was my sister.”

Claire went completely still.

Michael stared at his father.

“You never told me I had an aunt.”

“She disappeared before you were born.”

Claire looked at the photograph again.

“So we're related.”

David nodded.

“You're my niece.”

The revelation left Claire speechless.

I watched Grandma.

She seemed less surprised than the rest of us.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“About Claire's parents?”

“Yes.”

Daniel's voice sharpened.

“And you still kept it from her?”

Grandma closed her eyes.

“I thought giving her a normal life was kinder.”

Claire laughed quietly.

It wasn't amusement.

“You don't get to decide that for me.”

Grandma accepted the words.

“I know.”

Ruiz ended her call.

“The bank can confirm whether the Winter account exists.”

“When?” I asked.

“Tonight.”

Everyone looked at the clock.

It was nearly nine.

We had been moving from one hidden room to another for hours, yet the day still felt unfinished.

David walked to another cabinet.

“There is something else.”

He removed a sealed envelope.

This one was addressed to Victor.

Thomas stared at it.

“Don't open that.”

David looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel wanted Victor to open it himself.”

Ruiz took the envelope.

“We'll preserve it as evidence.”

A sudden noise came from outside.

Everyone stopped.

Gravel shifted beneath tires.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Ruiz reached for her radio.

“Who followed us?”

David moved toward the window.

“No one should know we're here.”

A car stopped.

Then another.

Michael whispered, “Victor.”

But David shook his head.

“Too many vehicles.”

Ruiz ordered everyone away from the windows.

The front door opened.

A man's voice echoed through the house.

“Detective Ruiz?”

She looked surprised.

“That's one of our officers.”

She stepped into the hallway.

A uniformed officer entered.

He held up his identification.

“We received a call from Northbridge Trust.”

Ruiz frowned.

“What did they say?”

“The bank has frozen every account connected to the Winter documents.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

The officer looked at me.

“Because someone attempted to transfer the entire balance an hour ago.”

David went pale.

“Who?”

The officer checked his phone.

“The request was authorized by one of the five beneficiaries.”

Every face turned toward us.

Claire whispered, “It wasn't me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not me.”

Marlene raised both hands.

“I haven't touched anything.”

Frank looked furious.

“Neither have I.”

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

“I didn't do it.”

Ruiz stared at the five of us.

“Then someone is using one of your identities.”

The officer handed her a printed transaction.

She read it.

Then her expression changed.

“The transfer was initiated from this house.”

Grandma looked around the archive.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael noticed the computer on Samuel's desk.

Its screen was glowing.

A cursor blinked beside a login field.

Someone had been using it.

The last login displayed a name.

Claire Bennett.

Claire stared at the screen.

“I've never seen that password.”

David walked closer.

“Neither has anyone else.”

He looked at the screen.

Then at Thomas.

“Samuel's final trap wasn't designed to catch Victor.”

Thomas slowly nodded.

“It was designed to catch whoever came after him.”
