PART 16 – Denise Arrived at the Workshop With the Truth About Lily’s Birth, and Maya Finally Understood Why Everyone Had Been Afraid

Maya rose before anyone could stop her.

“Mom?”

Denise appeared at the entrance.

She was alone.

Her clothes were soaked, and one sleeve was torn.

Maya rushed toward her.

“Where is Lily?”

Denise grabbed her shoulders.

“She's safe.”

Maya stared at her.

“Where?”

“I can't tell you yet.”

“You don't get to say that.”

“I know.”

“Where is my daughter?”

Denise looked toward Daniel.

Then Ella.

Then Maya's father.

“She is with someone I trust.”

Maya's anger surged.

“Who?”

“Clara.”

Maya froze.

“Clara has Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep her away from Robert.”

Maya's knees nearly gave way.

“Is she hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then call her.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Robert is listening.”

Daniel stood.

“How?”

Denise looked at him.

“He has access to the old trust accounts.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That doesn't give him access to phones.”

“He doesn't need phones.”

She pointed toward the wall.

“Your grandfather built listening devices into this property.”

Maya stared.

“You're saying he can hear us?”

“He could.”

Daniel looked around.

“Then we shouldn't stay.”

Denise shook her head.

“We're already inside the only room he can't access.”

Maya looked at the walls.

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather designed it to block the signals.”

Rachel whispered, “This gets worse every minute.”

Maya turned toward Denise.

“You said Lily was safe.”

“She is.”

“Then why did someone send me a photograph from her bedroom?”

Denise's face changed.

“What photograph?”

Maya showed her.

Denise stared.

“That isn't possible.”

“It happened.”

Denise looked at Ella.

“You knew?”

Ella shook her head.

“No.”

Maya stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth about Lily.”

Denise closed her eyes.

“I will.”

“Now.”

“Lily was added to the trust after she was born.”

Maya nodded.

“We know.”

“Your grandfather didn't add her.”

“Who did?”

“I did.”

Maya stared.

“Why?”

“Because I discovered who her biological father was.”

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Maya.

Denise continued.

“I found the name in the original records.”

Maya's voice dropped.

“Who?”

Denise looked at Daniel.

“Not him.”

Daniel looked down.

Maya's chest tightened.

“Then who?”

Denise whispered:

“Robert.”

Maya stared at her.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Robert is Lily's biological father?”

Denise nodded.

Maya shook her head violently.

“That can't be true.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“I didn't know.”

Maya looked at him.

“You raised her.”

“I loved her.”

“I know.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I never cared whether she was biologically mine.”

Maya turned toward Denise.

“How?”

“I was reviewing the old records.”

“You knew before Lily was born?”

“No.”

“Then when?”

“After.”

Denise took a breath.

“Robert had access to the clinic records because of the trust.”

Maya felt sick.

“You're saying he arranged the pregnancy?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“He discovered Lily existed.”

“Why would that matter?”

“Because her biological connection to him made her valuable.”

Maya's voice became cold.

“Valuable to whom?”

“Anyone who wanted access to the original trust.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Robert couldn't inherit through Lily.”

Denise nodded.

“Not directly.”

“But if Lily became a protected beneficiary…”

“Yes.”

“He could claim control.”

Maya understood.

Her daughter had become a doorway.

A child used as leverage.

The thought made her furious.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was afraid you'd leave with Lily.”

“I would have.”

“I know.”

“Why did you let me believe Daniel was her father?”

Denise looked at Daniel.

“He agreed.”

Daniel nodded.

“I thought it would protect her.”

Maya turned toward him.

“You both decided what I deserved to know.”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I was terrified.”

“So was I.”

“I know.”

Maya looked away.

The room fell silent.

Then Ella spoke.

“There's something else.”

Maya turned.

“Of course there is.”

Ella took a folded document from her coat.

“Robert isn't the only person who can control Lily's trust.”

Maya opened it.

A guardianship clause had been highlighted.

“If the primary beneficiary is under eighteen, control passes to the surviving designated protector.”

Maya looked at the name.

Her father's name.

She stared at him.

“You.”

He nodded.

“Your grandfather named me.”

“So if something happened to me…”

“I would control Lily's trust.”

Maya's eyes narrowed.

“And Robert knew that.”

“Yes.”

“Which means he needs me alive.”

Her father nodded.

“Or he needs you to sign away control.”

Maya folded the document.

“That's why he took Lily.”

Denise shook her head.

“He didn't.”

Maya looked at her.

“Then why threaten me?”

“Because he wants the original ledger.”

“And Clara has it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does he need Lily?”

“Because Clara won't hand it over.”

Maya thought about the photograph.

Clara.

Ella.

Her mother.

The workshop.

The fire.

The trust.

The four children.

One question remained.

“Who is the fourth beneficiary?”

Nobody answered.

Maya looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Ella looked away.

“I don't know.”

Denise began to cry.

Her father remained silent.

Maya stared at him.

“You know.”

He finally spoke.

“Yes.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Who?”

He took a folded photograph from his pocket.

Maya recognized the image immediately.

Her grandfather stood beside four children.

Ella.

Jonas.

Maya.

And a baby.

Maya's breath caught.

“Who is the baby?”

Her father looked at her.

“Your brother.”

Maya stared.

“I don't have a brother.”

“You did.”

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

“When?”

“The same week Ella was taken.”

Maya felt dizzy.

“Where is he?”

Her father looked toward Denise.

She whispered:

“Robert took him.”

Maya's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*NOW YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BOY.**

Another arrived.

*ASK YOUR FATHER WHY HE NEVER LOOKED FOR HIM.**

Maya looked up.

Her father was crying.

Then a third message appeared.

*CLARA HAS LILY. ROBERT HAS THE BOY.**

Maya's blood ran cold.

A final message followed.

*CHOOSE WHICH CHILD YOU WANT BACK.**

Maya stared at the screen.

Then she looked at the photograph of four children.

For the first time, she understood that the secret was not about money.

It was about people who had been moved, hidden, renamed, and protected until nobody remembered where they belonged.

Maya closed her hand around the photograph.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

She lifted her head.

“I am not choosing.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What are you going to do?”

Maya looked at the dark passage leading beneath the workshop.

“I'm going to find all of them.”

Her father whispered, “Maya, you don't understand what you're walking into.”

She looked at him.

“Then start explaining.”
