Part 12 : The Name on the Trust

The room went silent.

I stared at the black laptop screen.

“Me?”

Ramirez immediately shook his head.

“Don’t assume anything yet.”

But my husband looked at me with something I couldn’t read.

Fear.

“I didn’t know.”

“Know what?” I asked.

“The trust.”

“What about it?”

He stepped closer.

“Your name shouldn’t be anywhere near it.”

Ramirez’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Send it.”

He ended the call and looked at me.

“The transfer document has been located.”

“Where?”

“At a bank in Zurich.”

He turned his phone toward me.

My name appeared on the screen.

Emily Carter — Trustee and temporary beneficiary.

My knees nearly gave out.

“I never signed that.”

“I know.”

Ramirez zoomed in.

“That’s the problem.”

The signature looked exactly like mine.

But there was one detail that made my stomach turn.

The document was dated three days before Claire called me.

Before I’d ever known she was having surgery.

Before she’d begged to see Lily.

Before her supposed death.

“Someone planned this,” I whispered.

Claire stepped forward.

“I know who.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at my husband.

“Your father.”

My husband shook his head.

“He’s dead.”

“No.”

Claire looked toward the door where police had taken Rachel.

“He’s alive.”

She pulled a photograph from her coat.

It showed an elderly man sitting in a wheelchair.

My husband stared.

“That’s him.”

Claire nodded.

“Your father never died.”

“But we buried him.”

“You buried someone else.”

My husband stumbled backward.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel needed everyone to believe he was gone.”

Ramirez looked at Claire.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how do you know he’s alive?”

Claire’s expression darkened.

“Because he called me yesterday.”

She handed Ramirez her phone.

There was one voicemail.

An old man’s voice filled the room.

“You have one chance, Claire.”

“You can disappear, or Lily can disappear.”

Claire’s voice could be heard faintly in the background.

“Leave her alone.”

The man laughed.

“Then give me the trust.”

Claire answered:

“I don’t control it.”

“You don’t.”

A pause.

“But Emily does.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The recording continued.

“She doesn’t know it yet.”

The voicemail ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily whispered:

“Why Mom?”

Claire looked at her.

“Because when you were six, I realized Daniel was watching you.”

She took a shaky breath.

“I needed someone he couldn’t control.”

She looked at me.

“Your father chose you.”

I stared at her.

“My husband?”

Claire nodded.

“He knew you would love Lily.”

My husband lowered his head.

“He never told me the whole truth,” I said.

“No.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“He didn’t want you to know.”

“Why?”

“Because if Daniel discovered you knew about the trust, he’d come after you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“He came after me anyway.”

Claire nodded.

“Because he eventually found out.”

Suddenly, Lily’s phone buzzed.

She looked at it.

One message.

No number.

Just three words:

COME TO ME.

Then a location appeared.

My husband’s childhood home.

The same house where his father was supposedly buried.

Claire looked at the message.

Her face went pale.

“No.”

“What?”

“That’s where he keeps the original trust documents.”

Ramirez reached for his weapon.

“Then that’s where we’re going.”

Claire grabbed his arm.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

She looked at all of us.

“Daniel doesn’t want the money anymore.”

“Then what does he want?”

Claire looked at Lily.

“He wants to destroy the trust.”

“Why?”

“Because if the trust survives, Lily becomes the most powerful person in our family.”

She swallowed.

“And Daniel has spent his entire life trying to make sure that never happens.”

My husband took Lily’s hand.

“We stay together.”

I nodded.

But before we could leave, the lights went out.

Again.

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Then the sound of glass breaking.

Ramirez shouted:

“Down!”

We dropped.

A shadow moved across the doorway.

Then a man’s voice spoke from the darkness.

“Emily.”

I froze.

“Give me the trust.”

The lights suddenly came back on.

The hallway was empty.

Except for a single envelope lying on the floor.

I picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Lily as a newborn.

Claire was holding her.

My husband stood beside them.

And behind them…

was Daniel.

The photograph had been taken in the hospital on the night Lily was born.

On the back, someone had written:

You were never supposed to survive that night.

I looked at Claire.

She was crying.

“There’s something else I never told you.”

“What?”

She stared at Lily.

“Daniel didn’t come to the hospital to take her.”

She paused.

“He came to kill her.”

And suddenly, every mystery we’d been chasing for fourteen years had a single beginning.

The night my daughter was born.
