Claire sat down slowly.
“I should have told you years ago.”
Lily stood beside her.
“Tell me now.”
Claire nodded.
“The night you were born, Daniel wasn’t after the trust.”
“Then why was he there?”
“Because your grandfather had discovered what Daniel had done.”
Claire looked at my husband.
“He’d stolen millions from the family company.”
My husband shook his head.
“I never knew.”
“Nobody did.”
Claire continued.
“Your grandfather confronted him. Daniel threatened to expose the entire family.”
“Expose what?”
Claire looked at me.
“The trust wasn’t just money.”
She pulled a folded document from her bag.
“It contained evidence.”
Ramirez took it.
“Evidence of what?”
“Everything Daniel had done.”
Fraud.
Bribery.
Money laundering.
Murders.
Names.
Dates.
Accounts.
Enough information to put half a dozen powerful people in prison.
“The trust was created as insurance,” Claire said. “If Daniel ever tried to take control of the family again, the documents would become public.”
Lily looked frightened.
“Why me?”
“Because your great-grandfather trusted your bloodline.”
She touched Lily’s cheek.
“He believed you would grow up and do what he couldn’t.”
“Stop him?”
Claire nodded.
“But Daniel found out about the trust.”
“And that’s why he came to the hospital?”
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“He wanted to kill you before the trust could ever reach you.”
My husband stepped forward.
“Then what happened?”
“Your father arrived.”
“My father?”
Claire nodded.
“He confronted Daniel.”
“What did they do?”
“They fought.”
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel pulled a gun.”
My husband went pale.
“Then what?”
“Your father was shot.”
Lily gasped.
“Grandpa?”
“No,” Claire said. “He survived.”
She looked at my husband.
“But he made everyone believe he died later.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel had people everywhere.”
Claire continued.
“Your father went into hiding. He arranged for someone else to be buried in his place.”
My husband shook his head.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he believed you’d be safer if you hated him.”
I couldn’t help myself.
“Everyone in this family thinks lying is a form of protection.”
Claire looked at me sadly.
“You’re right.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ramirez examined the documents.
“There’s something missing.”
“What?”
“The original trust.”
Claire nodded.
“Daniel has it.”
“And if he destroys it?”
“Everything protecting Lily disappears.”
I looked at my daughter.
“What happens then?”
Claire answered quietly.
“She becomes vulnerable.”
Lily swallowed.
“Then we find it.”
I looked at her.
“Lily—”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I’m tired of everyone deciding what happens to me.”
Claire stared at her.
Lily continued.
“Mom left to protect me. Dad lied to protect me. You protected me.”
She looked at me.
“And now everyone is chasing me because of something that belongs to me.”
She took a breath.
“I’m not hiding anymore.”
For the first time, I saw something different in her face.
Not fear.
Determination.
Then my husband’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man’s voice said:
“Bring Lily.”
My husband said nothing.
The caller continued:
“Come to the hospital.”
“What hospital?”
“The one where she was born.”
My husband’s face went white.
The call ended.
Ramirez immediately said:
“It’s a trap.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Daniel wouldn’t choose that place.”
“Why not?”
“Because that’s where he failed.”
She stared at Lily.
“And Daniel never returns to places where he has lost.”
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
You have one hour.
Then another.
Come alone, Emily.
I looked at Claire.
She read the message.
“Don’t go.”
“I have to.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“If he wants me, I’ll go.”
My husband grabbed my hand.
“You’re not going alone.”
The phone buzzed again.
One final message.
This time there was a photograph.
Lily.
Standing inside the hospital.
Alone.
Taken only seconds earlier.
Her face went white.
“I wasn’t there.”
Claire looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“That’s not Lily.”
I stared at the image.
The girl in the photograph looked exactly like my daughter.
Same hair.
Same clothes.
Same backpack.
But there was one difference.
She was wearing the silver bracelet Claire had left Lily.
The bracelet was currently…
on Lily’s wrist.
Ramirez stared at the photograph.
“Then who is that?”
Claire whispered:
“Rachel.”
My blood ran cold.
Rachel had escaped.
And she had one thing none of us had realized.
She had been studying Lily for years.
Enough to become her perfect double.
And somewhere inside that hospital…
Rachel was waiting for us.
