I couldn’t breathe.
I looked at the photograph again.
The man beside my mother was smiling.
Young.
Healthy.
Alive.
On the back, beneath his name, someone had written:
Michael Carter — Witness to the Original Trust.
Lily leaned closer.
“Mom?”
“That’s my father.”
“Your father?”
I nodded.
“The man everyone said died before I was born.”
She looked at the photograph.
“Then who lied?”
I didn’t answer.
Because there was another detail.
The photograph had been taken fourteen years after my birth.
That meant my father hadn’t simply disappeared.
He had been alive.
And someone had deliberately hidden him.
I called Claire.
She answered immediately.
“Emily?”
“Do you know a man named Michael Carter?”
Silence.
“Claire?”
Her voice changed.
“Where did you get that name?”
“Someone sent me a photograph.”
“Don’t go looking for him.”
“Why?”
“Because he’s dangerous.”
I froze.
“You knew he was alive?”
Another silence.
“Claire.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your father asked me not to.”
My heart pounded.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
Claire sounded frightened.
“The last time I saw Michael, he told me he was going into hiding.”
“From whom?”
“From Daniel.”
“But Daniel is in prison.”
“Not the Daniel you’re thinking of.”
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
Before Claire could answer, the call ended.
I called back.
No response.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
Stop asking questions.
A second message arrived.
Your father is watching you.
I looked outside.
A black car was parked across the street.
Someone was sitting inside.
Lily noticed it too.
“Mom…”
“I see it.”
The car drove away.
I grabbed my coat.
“We’re leaving.”
We went straight to the address printed on the photograph.
An abandoned apartment building.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one apartment.
Number 14.
The door stood open.
I entered slowly.
On the wall were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
My childhood.
My mother.
Claire.
Lily.
My husband.
Even our wedding.
Someone had been watching us for years.
Lily whispered:
“Mom, look.”
She pointed toward a desk.
A file sat there.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
Inside were medical records.
My birth certificate.
My mother’s death certificate.
And a DNA report.
I read the first line.
Then stopped.
Michael Carter is not Emily Carter’s biological father.
My hands began shaking.
Lily looked at me.
“Then who is?”
I turned the page.
There was another name.
Daniel Mercer.
I couldn’t move.
The room seemed to tilt.
“No.”
Lily stared at the document.
“Mom…”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Another photograph lay beneath it.
My mother.
Pregnant.
Standing beside Daniel.
The date was twenty-five years ago.
Before Daniel had ever met Claire.
Before the Mercer trust.
Before Lily was born.
Before everything.
I heard footsteps behind us.
I turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older now.
Gray hair.
Same eyes as mine.
He looked at me.
“Hello, Emily.”
I couldn’t speak.
Lily whispered:
“Who are you?”
The man smiled.
“I’m Michael.”
My supposed father.
He stepped into the room.
“I’ve been waiting twenty-five years to meet my daughter.”
I stared at him.
“But you’re not my father.”
He nodded.
“Biologically?”
He smiled.
“No.”
He looked at the DNA report.
“But that’s exactly what Daniel wanted you to believe.”
“What?”
Michael closed the door behind him.
“Because the truth is much worse.”
He looked at Lily.
“Daniel isn’t your grandfather.”
Lily went pale.
“Then who is?”
Michael answered:
“Your grandfather was the man Daniel murdered.”
He pointed at me.
“And your mother…”
He paused.
“…was Daniel’s daughter.”
Silence.
I couldn’t understand.
“That would make Lily…”
Michael nodded.
“Daniel’s great-granddaughter.”
Lily stepped backward.
“Then why did he want me dead?”
Michael’s expression darkened.
“Because you inherited something he could never control.”
“What?”
Michael looked at the bracelet.
“The bloodline.”
He took a breath.
“And there’s one more thing you need to know.”
“What?”
“Daniel didn’t create the trust.”
He looked at me.
“Your mother did.”
Then someone outside fired a gun.
The window shattered.
Michael grabbed us both.
“Down!”
Another shot.
Michael looked toward the door.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
He looked at me.
“The people who have been protecting Daniel.”
And then he said the name that made my blood run cold:
“The government.”
