Part 22 : The Choice I Refused to Make

I stared at the video.

My husband was tied to a chair, bruised but conscious.

Behind him stood the real Daniel Mercer.

Not the old man we’d arrested.

Not the man we’d chased.

The real one.

Older.

Calm.

Terrifying.

Daniel looked into the camera.

“Bring Lily to the old family estate.”

He paused.

“Come alone.”

I clenched my phone.

“And if I don’t?”

He smiled.

“Then your husband dies.”

The video ended.

Lily stepped beside me.

“I’m going.”

“No.”

“He’s my dad.”

“I know.”

“Then I’m going.”

Claire grabbed her hand.

“Absolutely not.”

Lily looked at her.

“Mom, you disappeared for fourteen years because you were trying to protect me.”

Claire nodded.

“And I would do it again.”

“That’s the problem.”

Lily’s voice broke.

“Everyone keeps protecting me by making decisions for me.”

She looked at me.

“I won’t let Dad die because of me.”

I pulled her into my arms.

“Nobody is dying.”

Michael stepped forward.

“There may be another way.”

Everyone looked at him.

He opened his phone.

“I traced Daniel’s signal.”

“Where?”

“The old Mercer estate.”

Claire shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“That house burned down.”

Michael nodded.

“Officially.”

He showed us a satellite image.

A large underground structure sat beneath the ruins.

“The original family vault.”

Claire stared at it.

“Daniel built it.”

Michael nodded.

“That’s where he’s keeping your husband.”

I looked at Lily.

“We’re getting him back.”

The estate was surrounded by police within twenty minutes.

Michael stayed outside with the tactical team.

I, Lily, and Claire entered through a hidden tunnel beneath the ruins.

The passage led underground.

We heard voices ahead.

Then my husband’s voice.

“Emily!”

I ran.

Daniel stepped into view.

He held a gun against my husband’s head.

“You came.”

I stopped.

“You said alone.”

“I said you should come alone.”

He looked at Lily.

“And yet you brought everyone.”

Lily stepped forward.

“I’m here.”

Daniel smiled.

“My granddaughter.”

Claire moved in front of her.

“Leave her alone.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You’ve always been the problem.”

He raised his gun.

“Claire.”

She didn’t move.

“Do what you want to me.”

Daniel laughed.

“Still sacrificing yourself.”

He looked at Lily.

“Just like fourteen years ago.”

I stared at him.

“What happened that night?”

Daniel smiled.

“Your daughter wasn’t supposed to survive.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“But she did.”

“Because of Emily.”

Daniel looked at me.

“She ruined everything.”

I understood.

“That’s why you wanted me.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted me to raise Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Because I needed to know where the trust was.”

My husband spoke.

“She never knew.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s why I used you.”

My husband looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel continued.

“I manipulated your marriage. Your family. Your friends.”

He looked at Lily.

“Everything.”

Lily stood perfectly still.

“Then why are you afraid of me?”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Because you’re the last person who can expose me.”

She smiled.

“You already exposed yourself.”

Daniel frowned.

She held up her phone.

The screen showed a recording.

Everything Daniel had just said.

His confession.

His voice.

His face.

All of it.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You—”

Michael’s voice came through the speakers.

“Police are listening.”

Daniel fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

My husband tackled him.

I pulled Lily back.

Claire grabbed the gun.

Moments later, police stormed the vault.

Daniel was finally arrested.

For real.

This time, there was nowhere left to run.

Three months later, the trial began.

The evidence from the trust was released.

Bank records.

Secret payments.

Forged identities.

Hospital records.

Daniel’s confession.

Everything.

The Mercer empire collapsed.

Rachel pleaded guilty.

The old man confessed.

Michael testified.

And my husband recovered.

Slowly.

But completely.

One afternoon, Lily and I sat together on the porch.

She held the old bracelet.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Do you regret it?”

“Regret what?”

“Everything.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Even the part where you thought I was only your stepdaughter?”

I laughed.

“That part hurt.”

She leaned against my shoulder.

“But you always were my mom.”

I kissed her forehead.

“And you were always my daughter.”

She looked down at the bracelet.

“What should we do with the trust?”

I smiled.

“Whatever you want.”

She thought for a moment.

“Build a hospital.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

“So nobody ever has to be afraid of a hospital again.”

I hugged her.

“That’s my girl.”

Then a courier arrived.

He handed me a small package.

No return address.

My heart stopped.

After everything we’d been through, I didn’t want to open it.

But Lily took my hand.

“Together?”

I nodded.

We opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

On the back were six words:

You still don’t know who your father was.

I stared at the picture.

It showed my mother.

Claire.

And a man I’d never seen before.

Except…

I recognized his face.

Because he was standing beside us in the oldest photograph from the night Lily was born.

And beneath the photograph was a name:

Michael Carter.

My biological father.

A man everyone had told me died before I was born.

A man who, according to the date on the photograph…

was alive fourteen years after my birth.
