Part3 :My mom found a boyfriend three days after my sister’s funeral.

I couldn’t move.

Daniel stood between me and the motel.

“Your husband has been working for me.”

The words echoed in my head.

Then Mark screamed my name.

“RUN!”

A gunshot shattered the night.

I ducked behind the car.

Daniel grabbed my arm, but before he could pull me away, headlights appeared at the far end of the parking lot.

Another vehicle came speeding toward us.

It slammed into Daniel’s SUV.

The impact threw Daniel to the ground.

I ran.

Not toward the motel.

Away from everything.

I heard footsteps behind me.

“Don’t shoot!”

A woman’s voice.

I turned.

A figure emerged from the darkness.

A woman.

She lowered her weapon.

Then she pulled down the hood covering her face.

My breath caught.

I knew her.

I had seen that face every day of my childhood.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every family photograph.

My sister.

Emma.

Alive.

I couldn’t speak.

She ran toward me and wrapped her arms around me.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Then I pushed her away.

“You died.”

“I know.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I had no choice.”

“You let me think you were dead!”

Tears filled her eyes.

“If I’d told you the truth, they’d have killed you too.”

I slapped her.

She didn’t react.

I slapped her again.

Then I collapsed against her and cried.

She held me.

“I’m sorry.”

I whispered, “Mom.”

Her expression changed.

“They have her.”

“Mark?”

She looked toward the motel.

“He went inside because he knew where she was.”

“Daniel said Mark works for him.”

Emma shook her head.

“Daniel is lying.”

“Then why did he say it?”

“Because he knows you’ll believe it.”

She took my hands.

“Listen to me. Mark never betrayed you.”

I stared at her.

“Then tell me why he married me.”

Emma looked away.

“Because I asked him to.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew I was being watched.”

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

“I needed someone I could trust to stay close to you.”

“Why me?”

“Because you’re the only thing Daniel could use against me.”

I remembered Mark’s strange questions.

His protectiveness.

His secrecy.

His jealousy whenever Emma and I talked.

Everything suddenly looked different.

Emma continued.

“Daniel’s organization has people everywhere. Police. Lawyers. Banks. Even funeral homes.”

I stared at her.

“The funeral…”

“They needed you to believe I was dead.”

“Why?”

“So Daniel would stop looking for me.”

“And Mom?”

“Mom discovered the truth.”

I looked toward the motel.

“What truth?”

Emma hesitated.

Then she said:

“Daniel isn’t the real mastermind.”

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Who is?”

Emma looked at me.

“Our father.”

I stopped breathing.

“Our father died eight years ago.”

“I know.”

“I was there when he died.”

Emma shook her head.

“No, you weren’t.”

“What are you saying?”

She pulled a photograph from her jacket.

It showed a man standing outside a warehouse.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably our father.

My hands began shaking.

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

Emma looked toward the motel.

“Until I found him.”

A gunshot echoed.

Emma grabbed my wrist.

“We have to go.”

“What about Mom?”

“We’re getting her.”

“What about Mark?”

Emma looked at me.

“He’s already inside.”

“Is he safe?”

She paused.

Then whispered:

“That’s what I’m afraid of.”

We entered through a back door.

The motel was almost completely dark.

Emma moved silently down the corridor.

I followed.

We reached room 12.

She opened the door.

Inside, Mom was tied to a chair.

Her face was bruised.

“Mom!”

I rushed toward her.

She started crying.

“My baby.”

Emma cut the ropes.

Mom stared at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Mom whispered:

“I knew.”

Emma froze.

“You knew?”

“I knew you weren’t dead.”

My sister looked devastated.

“Why didn’t you tell her?”

Mom looked at me.

“Because your sister made me promise.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone knew except me.”

Mom reached for my hand.

“We were trying to protect you.”

“By destroying me?”

No one answered.

Then we heard footsteps.

Emma raised her gun.

The door opened.

Mark stood there.

Blood was running down the side of his face.

I ran to him.

“Mark!”

He caught me.

“I’m okay.”

Emma pointed her weapon at him.

“Where is Daniel?”

“Dead.”

She lowered the gun slightly.

“What happened?”

“He tried to escape.”

“Did he say anything?”

Mark looked at me.

Then at Emma.

“He said your father is coming.”

The room went silent.

A man’s voice came from the hallway.

“He’s already here.”

Our father stepped into the doorway.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

He looked at me and smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

My mother began to cry.

Emma raised her gun.

Our father looked at her.

“Put it down.”

She didn’t.

He smiled.

“Your sister doesn’t know the whole story.”

I looked at him.

“What story?”

He looked directly at me.

“The reason Daniel wanted you dead.”

He paused.

“You’re the person who inherited everything.”

I frowned.

“What did I inherit?”

He smiled.

“The company.”

I stared at him.

“What company?”

“The one your mother thought I lost twenty years ago.”

Mark suddenly grabbed my hand.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Our father laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

He looked at me.

“Your sister wasn’t protecting you from Daniel.”

He pointed at Emma.

“She was protecting you from me.”

And then the lights went out.
