We ran until my lungs burned.
Mark pulled me through the narrow alley behind my mother’s house, never letting go of my hand.
“Where are we going?” I gasped.
“Somewhere they won’t look.”
“Who are they?”
He didn’t answer.
We reached an old garage at the end of the alley. Mark unlocked a side door and pushed me inside.
It was dark and smelled of oil and dust.
He locked the door behind us.
I turned on him.
“Start talking.”
He leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.
“Your sister found evidence against Daniel six months ago.”
“And you knew?”
“Yes.”
“You knew someone wanted her dead?”
“I knew someone was threatening her.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“It wasn’t enough.”
I stared at him.
“Tell me everything.”
Mark sat on an overturned box.
“Emma discovered that Daniel wasn’t working alone. He was laundering money through shell companies and using people close to him to move it.”
“My mother?”
“Possibly.”
I felt sick.
“Mom wouldn’t do that.”
“I don’t think she knew what she was involved in.”
“Then why did Daniel take her?”
“Because she knows something.”
“What?”
“We don’t know.”
I shook my head.
“You keep saying ‘we.’ Who else is there?”
Mark hesitated.
“Emma.”
I stared at him.
“Emma is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then what do you mean?”
He pulled out his phone and opened an encrypted folder.
There were dozens of files.
Photos.
Documents.
Audio recordings.
And videos.
At the top of the folder was a date.
Six days ago.
I looked at him.
“Why do you have files dated after Emma died?”
Mark’s face went pale.
“I don’t.”
“Then explain that.”
He took the phone from me.
His fingers trembled as he opened the newest file.
A video appeared.
Emma was sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
My knees nearly gave out.
“Emma?”
Her face filled the screen.
She looked exhausted.
There was a bruise beneath her eye.
She stared directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something has gone wrong.”
I covered my mouth.
Mark didn’t move.
Emma continued.
“First, I’m sorry.”
Tears ran down my face.
“I know you’ll want to trust Mark. Don’t.”
I looked at my husband.
He looked as shocked as I was.
“Everything he told you is partly true. That’s what makes it dangerous.”
The video paused for a second.
Then Emma whispered:
“Mark didn’t marry you to protect you.”
My heart sank.
“He married you because I asked him to.”
The video ended.
Silence.
I slowly turned toward him.
“You said you fell in love with me.”
“I did.”
“But you married me because of Emma.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because she knew she was going to disappear.”
“Disappear?”
“She believed someone inside the investigation was leaking information.”
I shook my head.
“Then what happened to her?”
Mark looked away.
“I don’t know.”
I froze.
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“The body they identified as Emma’s…”
He swallowed.
“…wasn’t Emma.”
For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.
Then everything went silent.
The funeral.
The coffin.
The flowers.
The priest.
My mother collapsing beside me.
The closed casket.
I whispered, “We buried someone else.”
Mark nodded.
“Yes.”
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR MOTHER BACK.
Below it was an address.
I showed Mark.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“I’m going.”
“It’s a trap.”
“It’s my mother.”
“And that’s exactly why they’ll use her.”
I looked at him.
“What would Emma do?”
Mark went silent.
Then he said:
“She’d go.”
I grabbed my coat.
He sighed.
“Then I’m coming with you.”
“No.”
“You can’t do this alone.”
I stared at him.
“You’ve lied to me for five years.”
“I know.”
“I don’t trust you.”
“I know.”
“Then why should I let you come?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Because Emma trusted me with one thing.”
“What?”
“Your life.”
We drove for almost an hour.
The address led us to an abandoned roadside motel.
Every light was off.
The parking lot was empty.
Except for one black SUV.
The same one from the photograph.
Mark stopped the car.
“Stay here.”
I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“If I don’t come back in five minutes, drive.”
“Where?”
“Anywhere.”
He got out.
I watched him walk toward the motel.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
I couldn’t wait anymore.
I opened the car door.
A voice came from behind me.
“Looking for your husband?”
I turned.
A man stood in the darkness.
He was holding a gun.
But he wasn’t pointing it at me.
He pointed it toward the motel.
“He’s not the person you should be afraid of.”
My heart pounded.
“Who are you?”
He stepped into the light.
I knew his face.
I had seen him at Emma’s funeral.
He had stood at the back of the church.
Watching.
Waiting.
He smiled.
“My name is Daniel.”
Then he lowered the weapon.
“And your husband has been working for me.”
My entire world seemed to collapse again.
From inside the motel, I heard a scream.
My mother’s scream.
And then Mark shouted:
“RUN!”
The lights suddenly came on.
Every window of the motel was filled with armed men.
Daniel smiled.
“Now we find out which one of them your sister was really trying to save.”
