PART 12 – The Man Who Had Disappeared After Matthew’s Death Finally Agreed to Talk, but His First Sentence Made Me Question Everything

The interview took place in a small office two hours from home.

I almost didn't go.

Daniel had advised against it.

Henry wanted me to stay with Eleanor and the baby.

But I insisted.

“If this concerns Matthew, I need to hear it.”

Henry looked at me for a long time.

Then he nodded.

“I'll stay beside you.”

Eleanor watched us leave.

“Be careful.”

I smiled.

“We will.”

The man waiting for us was named Robert Vance.

He looked nothing like the person I had imagined.

There was no obvious menace.

He was ordinary.

Gray jacket.

Plain shoes.

A tired face.

He stood when we entered.

His eyes went directly to Henry.

Then to me.

“I wondered when you'd come.”

My stomach tightened.

“You knew we were looking?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He sat down.

“Because Matthew told me you would eventually.”

I stared at him.

“When?”

“Before the accident.”

Henry leaned forward.

“What did he tell you?”

Robert looked at him.

“That if anything happened to him, you would protect her.”

The same words.

Again.

The promise.

The one we had believed we understood.

My hands went cold.

“What exactly did Matthew know?”

Robert looked toward the window.

“More than he could prove.”

“About the truck?”

“Yes.”

“About the driver?”

“Yes.”

“About you?”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

He took a breath.

“Someone inside the company was manipulating delivery records.”

Daniel asked, “To what purpose?”

“Money.”

“Was Matthew investigating?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know who was responsible?”

“He suspected.”

“Who?”

Robert hesitated.

Then he looked at Henry.

“I can't say.”

Henry's jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Because I don't know whether that person is still alive.”

The room became silent.

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

Robert looked at me.

“Matthew believed the person responsible knew he was investigating.”

I remembered Matthew checking the driveway.

His late-night calls.

His sudden silence.

The notebook.

The number.

The symbols.

Everything seemed to connect.

“What happened the night before the accident?”

Robert closed his eyes.

“Matthew called me.”

“Why?”

“He told me he had proof.”

“What proof?”

“A set of records.”

“Did he have them?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Robert looked at Henry.

“I gave them to him.”

Henry's expression changed.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Matthew told me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn't trust anyone around you.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Why would he say that?”

Robert looked directly at me.

“Because he believed someone was watching your house.”

I could barely breathe.

“Watching me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“For several weeks.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why did Matthew keep me in the dark?”

“Because he wanted you to remain unaware.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn't sound like him.”

Robert gave a sad smile.

“You think he would have told you?”

“Yes.”

“He loved you too much.”

The sentence hurt.

Robert continued.

“He knew you would confront whoever threatened him.”

I thought of myself at that age.

I probably would have.

Matthew knew that.

He had always known that I could be stubborn.

“What happened to the records?”

Robert looked down.

“They disappeared.”

“When?”

“The night before the accident.”

Henry's face tightened.

“Who took them?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you certain they were stolen?”

“Because Matthew told me.”

“What did he say?”

Robert reached into a folder.

He removed a photocopy.

The page was partially damaged.

I recognized the handwriting.

Matthew's.

He had written several names.

Beside one name was the same triangle symbol.

My heart raced.

“Where did you get that?”

“Matthew sent it to me.”

“When?”

“The morning of the accident.”

I stared at the page.

There was another line.

My name.

My breath caught.

“Why is my name there?”

Robert answered quietly.

“Because Matthew believed you were in danger.”

Henry took the paper.

His face changed.

“This is why he wrote my name.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Henry pointed to a sentence near the bottom.

I read it.

It was short.

It said that if anything happened, Henry should make sure I never went looking for the people responsible.

My eyes filled with tears.

Matthew had not written Henry's name because he distrusted him.

He had written it because he trusted him.

The realization hit me with painful clarity.

All those years, I had misunderstood the secret.

Henry had never been part of the danger.

He had been the person Matthew chose to stand between me and it.

I looked at Henry.

He was crying silently.

“I didn't know,” he said.

“I know.”

“I wish I had.”

“I know.”

Robert lowered his eyes.

“There is one more thing.”

My heart tightened.

“What?”

“Matthew knew the truck driver was being sent somewhere he normally didn't go.”

“Where?”

“Past your house.”

I froze.

“My house?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Robert shook his head.

“He didn't know.”

Henry looked at Daniel.

“Can we trace the delivery instruction?”

“We can try.”

Robert stood.

“I have more documents.”

“Where?”

“Not with me.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of whom?”

Robert looked at the door.

“The same people Matthew was afraid of.”

I felt the old fear return.

“But you came here.”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

He looked at me.

“Because I heard you had a child.”

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Everything.”

He sat again.

“Matthew was terrified that if something happened to him, you would be left alone.”

My eyes burned.

“But I'm not alone.”

Robert looked at Henry.

“No.”

Then he looked toward the hallway.

“That's why I needed to know whether Henry kept his promise.”

Henry stared at him.

“What promise?”

Robert answered.

“To protect her.”

The words silenced the room.

I looked at Henry.

He had kept it.

He had protected me from the danger he knew.

He had protected me from the truth because he believed the truth itself might lead me toward the people Matthew feared.

He had made mistakes.

He had hidden too much.

But his intentions had never been what I had once feared.

Robert reached into his pocket.

He removed a small key.

“This was Matthew's.”

I recognized it immediately.

A small brass key.

I had seen it before.

“Where did you get that?”

“Matthew gave it to me.”

“What does it open?”

Robert looked at me.

“A storage box.”

“Where?”

He hesitated.

“Near the old office.”

Henry leaned forward.

“What's inside?”

“I don't know.”

“You've never opened it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Matthew told me that if anything happened, I should give the key to Henry.”

My breath caught.

Henry stared at the key.

I looked at Matthew's photograph in my mind.

His smile.

His handwriting.

His final request.

The promise.

Everything had been pointing toward this.

Henry slowly reached for the key.

Then he stopped.

He looked at me.

“I think you should have it.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Matthew gave it to you.”

Henry closed his fingers around it.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then Daniel said quietly, “We should find the box.”

We left the office just before sunset.

The drive home was almost silent.

When we arrived, Eleanor was waiting on the porch.

She saw our faces.

“What happened?”

Henry held up the key.

Her eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?”

“Robert.”

Eleanor sat down.

I knelt beside her.

“You know what it opens?”

She stared at the key.

Then at me.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“What?”

She looked frightened.

“Matthew had another box.”

“Where?”

She whispered the answer.

“Under the floorboards of the old house.”

I felt a chill move through me.

The old house.

The place where Eleanor had lived alone after Matthew died.

The place where so much of our history had begun.

Henry looked at me.

“We need to go there.”

I nodded.

Eleanor stood.

“No.”

We turned.

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

She looked toward the darkening road.

“I went there once after Matthew died.”

“And?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“The box was already open.”
