PART 12 – Daniel’s Search for Laura’s Connection to the Investigator Uncovered the Real Reason She Left—and the Secret Ava Was Never Supposed to Learn

Daniel called Laura before Emily could stop him.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Daniel?”

“What is Pike Investigations?”

Silence.

Emily watched Daniel’s face harden.

He was standing beside her kitchen window, phone pressed to his ear.

“Laura.”

She sighed.

“Where did you find that?”

“That is not the question.”

Emily held up a hand.

Daniel looked at her.

She mouthed, Facts.

He nodded.

“When did you become connected to Owen Pike’s business?”

Laura did not answer immediately.

“Six years ago.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“I invested.”

“In a private investigation company?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Owen needed money.”

“How did you know him?”

“Through Marissa.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

That fit part of the record.

“How much did you invest?”

“A small amount.”

“Define small.”

“Twenty thousand.”

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“Twenty thousand dollars is not small.”

“It was to the company.”

“Did you receive profits?”

“For a while.”

“Did Owen investigate Emily?”

Laura went quiet.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Laura.”

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Daniel turned away.

“For how long?”

“A few months.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to know if she was serious about you.”

“She was my fiancée.”

“I know.”

“That answered the question.”

“I wasn’t thinking clearly.”

Daniel paced.

“Did you have him enter her building?”

“No.”

“Her apartment?”

“No.”

“Track her phone?”

“No.”

“Access accounts?”

“No.”

“Did he ever approach her?”

“Not that I know.”

Emily took the phone.

“Not that you know is not enough.”

Laura’s voice softened.

“Emily.”

“Did you instruct him to photograph me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you instruct him to identify where I lived?”

“Yes.”

“Did you ask for anything else?”

Silence.

Emily’s hand tightened.

“What else?”

“I asked him to find out whether you had debts.”

Emily stared at the wall.

“What?”

“I wanted to know if you were with Daniel for money.”

Daniel’s face went red.

Emily stayed calm.

“Did he access private financial records?”

“He said no.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I don’t know.”

Emily closed her eyes briefly.

“What did he give you?”

“Public filings. Property records. Employment information.”

“Anything medical?”

“No.”

“Family?”

“Basic information.”

“Addresses?”

“Yes.”

Emily felt violated in a different way now.

Not because the information was necessarily secret.

Because someone had gathered her life into a file for a stranger who had decided she was dangerous.

“Why stop?”

“Marissa found out.”

Daniel looked up.

Laura continued.

“She was furious.”

Emily remembered the notebook entry.

L increasingly fixated.

“She threatened to tell Daniel?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“She thought it would hurt Ava.”

Emily almost laughed bitterly.

Again.

Protecting Ava used to justify silence.

Silence created the exact harm everyone claimed to be avoiding.

“Then why did Owen stop?”

“He didn’t.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Emily went still.

“What?”

Laura’s breathing became audible.

“I stopped asking.”

“That is not the same.”

“I know.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“What did he do after?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel took the phone.

“You were part-owner.”

“On paper.”

“Were you paying him?”

“Not for Emily.”

“Were you paying him at all?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Laura went silent again.

Daniel slammed his free hand against the counter.

“Stop making us drag every sentence out of you.”

Ava’s voice came from the doorway.

“Dad?”

Daniel froze.

He had not heard her enter.

She stood with her backpack over one shoulder.

Her face had gone pale.

“Who are you talking to?”

Daniel looked at Emily.

Emily looked at Ava.

No one answered fast enough.

Ava understood.

“Mom.”

Daniel lowered the phone.

“Ava—”

“Put it on speaker.”

He hesitated.

Ava’s expression hardened.

“Do not decide what I can hear after everybody spent years deciding things for me.”

Daniel exhaled.

Then put the phone on speaker.

Laura whispered, “Hi.”

Ava ignored the greeting.

“What was Owen investigating after Emily?”

Laura did not answer.

Ava dropped her backpack.

“What was he investigating?”

“Ava, this is complicated.”

The girl laughed without humor.

“That phrase should be banned in this family.”

Emily almost smiled despite the tension.

Laura was quiet.

Ava stepped closer.

“Was he watching Dad?”

“No.”

“Grandma?”

“No.”

“Me?”

Laura said nothing.

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.”

Ava stared at the phone.

“Mom?”

“I wanted to know you were safe.”

Daniel’s voice became dangerously calm.

“You had an investigator watching our daughter?”

“Not watching constantly.”

“How often?”

“Occasionally.”

Ava backed away.

Daniel looked sick.

“Where?”

“School events. Games.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

“Did he take pictures?”

“Yes.”

Emily stepped toward her.

Ava held up a hand.

“No.”

She wanted distance.

Everyone gave it to her.

“What else did he do?”

Laura whispered, “He made sure Daniel wasn’t moving you away.”

Daniel stared.

“Moving her away?”

“You talked once about taking a job in Denver.”

“That was before Emily and I were engaged.”

“I know.”

“You thought I would steal my own daughter?”

“I thought you might make it impossible for me to return.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“You had years to return.”

Laura cried softly.

“I know.”

Ava spoke.

“Why did you leave?”

The room went still.

The question had been asked before.

Never answered.

This time Ava did not sound like a child.

She sounded like someone who had run out of space for mystery.

“Tell me.”

Laura breathed in.

“I thought your father was going to leave me.”

Daniel stared.

“I wasn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You knew it then.”

Laura’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t know what I knew.”

“Then tell me.”

Silence.

Ava whispered, “Please.”

Laura broke.

“When you were twelve, I found a file on Daniel’s computer.”

Daniel frowned.

“What file?”

“A divorce information packet.”

Daniel stared.

Emily looked at him.

“Did you download one?”

Daniel’s face changed.

Then he remembered.

“Oh God.”

Ava watched him.

Daniel sat.

“It was for Mark.”

“Who?”

“My brother.”

Ava frowned.

Daniel continued.

“Mark was thinking about leaving his marriage. He used my computer because Sharon checked his devices.”

Laura’s breathing stopped.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“You thought it was mine.”

“You never told me.”

“You never asked.”

“I asked if you were unhappy.”

Daniel looked devastated.

“You asked during an argument whether I regretted marrying you.”

“You said you didn’t.”

“Because I didn’t.”

Laura began crying.

Emily stepped away.

The entire disaster had been built partly on an interpretation no one had clarified.

Laura continued.

“Then you came home talking about that designer.”

Daniel stared.

“Emily.”

“Yes.”

“That was years earlier.”

“I remembered.”

“You built a connection that did not exist.”

“I know that now.”

Ava looked between them.

“So you thought Dad was planning to leave you for Emily?”

“No. Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

Laura’s voice trembled.

“I thought he wanted someone like her.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Again.

A symbol.

Not a person.

Laura continued.

“I became obsessed with everything I thought I wasn’t.”

Daniel whispered, “Why leave?”

“Because I wanted to leave first.”

Ava’s face collapsed.

Laura rushed on.

“I know how that sounds.”

“No,” Ava said. “You don’t.”

Laura cried.

Ava continued.

“You left me because you were afraid Dad might leave you?”

“I was afraid I would become the person nobody chose.”

Ava shook her head.

“So you made me become that person.”

Laura stopped breathing for a second.

Ava’s voice broke.

“I was twelve.”

“I know.”

“You knew what abandonment felt like.”

“Yes.”

“And you did it to me anyway.”

No one moved.

Laura finally said, “Yes.”

The honesty was devastating.

Ava wiped her face.

“Thank you.”

Laura seemed confused.

“For what?”

“For saying yes.”

She picked up her backpack.

Daniel stood.

“Ava.”

“I need to go.”

“Where?”

“To Grandma’s.”

Daniel started to object.

Then stopped.

“Do you want me to drive?”

“No.”

“Emily?”

Ava looked at her.

Emily shook her head.

“Not unless you want me to.”

Ava swallowed.

“No.”

She left.

Daniel stood staring at the closed door.

Laura remained on speaker.

Emily spoke.

“Do not call her.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

Daniel sank into a chair.

He looked exhausted.

Then he asked, “Why did you marry someone else?”

Laura was silent.

Daniel looked toward the phone.

“If you were still watching us, still afraid of being replaced, why build another life?”

Laura answered quietly.

“Because I eventually realized I had destroyed the first one.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“That doesn’t explain it.”

“No.”

Laura continued.

“I met Michael in Pittsburgh. He didn’t know who I had been here.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

Laura said, “With him, I could be somebody who hadn’t failed everyone.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So you made a new life instead of repairing the old one.”

“Yes.”

Again, brutal honesty.

Daniel rubbed his eyes.

“Does Michael know about Ava?”

“Yes.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

“About the investigator?”

A pause.

“No.”

Emily spoke.

“He needs to.”

Laura inhaled.

“I know.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

Something had changed between them during the call.

Not repaired.

Not resolved.

But they were standing on the same side of one truth.

That had not happened often enough when they were married.

Laura spoke again.

“There is something else you need to know about Owen.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Of course there is.”

“He stopped working for me.”

“When?”

“About three years ago.”

“That matches the license date.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he found something.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

Laura hesitated.

“It wasn’t about you.”

“Then who?”

“Marissa.”

Daniel frowned.

“What did he find about her?”

Laura’s voice became quieter.

“That she had been keeping copies of everything.”

Emily glanced at the box.

Laura continued.

“Owen told me she was afraid.”

“Of you?” Emily asked.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Laura said, “Him.”

Daniel stared.

“Owen?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he had started using the information he gathered for other things.”

Emily felt a chill.

“What things?”

“Leverage.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Blackmail?”

Laura did not use the word.

She did not need to.

Emily looked toward the flash drive.

Laura continued.

“Marissa believed he kept separate files.”

“On me?”

“Possibly.”

“On Daniel?”

“Possibly.”

“Ava?”

Laura’s silence answered.

Daniel stood.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily watched him.

Laura added, “But Marissa thought Owen kept physical copies.”

“Where?”

“She never found out.”

Daniel turned toward the box.

Then stopped.

Ava was gone.

Helen had not yet called.

Emily’s phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

She looked at the screen.

Daniel noticed.

“Don’t answer.”

Emily almost smiled at the old instinct.

Then she answered anyway.

“Hello?”

A man spoke.

“You don’t know me.”

Emily’s posture changed.

Daniel moved closer.

The voice continued.

“My name is Peter Pike.”

Daniel’s face sharpened at the surname.

The man said, “Owen Pike was my brother.”

Emily put the call on speaker.

Peter took a breath.

“I think you have something that belonged to Marissa Vale.”

Emily stared at the box.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing from you.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because my brother kept records after he died.”

Daniel went still.

Peter continued.

“And if Laura Whitmore has finally started talking, you need to know those records do not end where she says they do.”
