PART 19 – Richard Vale Was Supposed to Have Been Dead for Two Years, Yet the Wedding Photograph Proved Someone Had Been Watching Us From Inside the Celebration

Nobody slept that night.

Federal agents surrounded Eleanor's house.

The photograph was examined immediately.

The date on the file confirmed it had been taken during my wedding reception.

Richard Vale stood near the bar.

He wasn't hiding.

He was smiling.

He looked directly toward the camera.

Almost as if he knew the photograph would eventually matter.

Clara stared at it.

“That isn't possible.”

“You said he was dead,” Grant said.

“He was.”

“You identified the body?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“My father's doctor.”

“Did you attend the funeral?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see the body?”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Grant looked at me.

“Another manufactured death.”

I sat at Eleanor's kitchen table.

I felt exhausted.

Not frightened.

Not exactly.

Just tired of discovering that every ending had another door behind it.

Daniel sat beside me.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

I almost smiled.

“You're not wrong.”

He looked at the photograph.

“That's him.”

“Do you remember him?”

“I remember seeing him once when I was a kid.”

“Where?”

“At Evelyn's house.”

Eleanor corrected him.

“My house.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You told me he was your neighbor.”

“I lied.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Of course.”

Clara looked at him.

“Did he speak to you?”

“He asked whether I knew Emily.”

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

“Why?”

“I didn't know you then.”

Clara turned toward me.

“He was looking for you even then.”

The room fell quiet.

Grant asked Eleanor what Richard wanted.

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“The trust.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust contained evidence that could expose him.”

Clara opened another file.

Richard had maintained a private database of everyone connected to the original network.

Judges.

Bankers.

Lawyers.

Government officials.

Some were dead.

Some were still powerful.

The database was worth more than the money.

It could destroy careers.

Collapse companies.

Trigger criminal investigations across multiple countries.

“Where is the database?”

Clara shook her head.

“My father never told me.”

“But someone accessed it.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After Victor was arrested.”

Grant looked at me.

“Who had access?”

I thought about the people involved.

My mother.

Robert.

Thomas.

Marcus.

Rebecca.

Samuel.

Clara.

Eleanor.

Then one name stood out.

Jackson.

He had been given access to some of the wedding financial documents.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?”

“Did you ever access Richard Vale's files?”

“No.”

“Did Mom give you access?”

“She gave me a password.”

“What password?”

He hesitated.

“Her birthday.”

“Try again.”

He sighed.

“Your birthday.”

I felt a chill.

“What system did you use it for?”

“The wedding property portal.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Grant signaled for me to ask him about the photograph.

“Do you know Richard Vale?”

Jackson went silent.

“Jackson.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He met me before the wedding.”

“When?”

“Three months before.”

“What did he want?”

“He wanted me to convince you to invest in the property.”

I closed my eyes.

“Did he threaten you?”

“No.”

“What did he promise?”

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Five million.”

“You told us Mom offered you five million.”

“She did.”

“So did Richard.”

I understood.

Jackson had been approached by both.

They were competing for control of the same property.

The wedding had become a battlefield without anyone knowing.

“Did Richard give you anything?”

“A flash drive.”

“Where is it?”

“I destroyed it.”

“Why?”

“Because I realized what was on it.”

“What?”

“Names.”

I asked him to describe them.

He refused.

Then his voice changed.

“Emily, someone is outside my apartment.”

Grant took the phone.

“Jackson, lock the door and move away from the windows.”

A crash sounded.

Jackson shouted.

The call ended.

We rushed to his apartment.

Police arrived first.

The front door was open.

Inside, furniture had been overturned.

Jackson was gone.

Khloe stood in the kitchen, crying.

She had arrived minutes earlier.

“They took him.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

She pointed toward the hallway.

A trail of blood led toward the balcony.

Grant followed it.

There was no body.

Only a torn piece of fabric caught on the railing.

Jackson's jacket.

I looked at Khloe.

“What happened?”

“He called me.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes before you.”

“What did he say?”

“He said he finally remembered where he'd seen Richard.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

Khloe handed me Jackson's phone.

The screen displayed a saved location.

My childhood home.

The house where Robert had raised me.

The house I had sold after his death.

The house I had not entered in seventeen years.

Grant looked at the address.

“That's where we go.”

We arrived just before midnight.

The house had been empty for years.

Dust covered the windows.

The front door opened with a key I still carried.

Inside, the smell of old wood brought memories back so quickly that I nearly stopped breathing.

My childhood bedroom remained mostly untouched.

A faded poster still hung above the desk.

A small scratch marked the wall where I had measured my height.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

“You lived here.”

“Yes.”

He looked around.

“I've never been inside.”

“Neither have I, in years.”

We searched the house.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the fireplace.

There was a loose brick behind it.

I pulled it free.

Inside was a small metal box.

The lock opened with my old key.

A photograph.

A cassette.

And a handwritten note.

The note was from Robert.

Emily,

If you ever return here, then the people I feared have failed to keep you away from the truth.

I stared at the page.

The cassette contained a recording.

Robert's voice.

He explained that Richard Vale had approached him years earlier.

Richard knew about my true identity.

He knew about Daniel.

He knew about Samuel.

But he didn't know where the original ledger was.

Robert had hidden it inside the house.

Not the old house.

This one.

My childhood home.

I looked around.

“The ledger is here.”

Grant ordered the house searched.

We found a concealed panel beneath the staircase.

Inside was another compartment.

Empty.

Someone had already taken it.

Then Daniel noticed a fresh footprint in the dust.

Someone had been there recently.

Grant followed the prints to the back door.

It opened onto the alley.

A black sedan waited at the curb.

The driver accelerated away.

Grant's officers pursued.

I watched the taillights disappear.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Richard.

You finally came home.

A second message followed.

Ask Robert where he buried your brother.

My blood went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

He stared at me.

“I don't know.”

Then another message arrived.

Samuel is not your brother.
