Part 15 : The Truth About Me

I couldn’t hear anything after Rachel said it.

The hospital corridor seemed to disappear.

Lily looked at me.

“Mom?”

I wanted to answer.

I couldn’t.

My husband stared at Claire.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She’s not.”

Lily stepped backward.

“What?”

I finally found my voice.

“Lily…”

“Am I your daughter?”

My heart broke.

“Yes.”

She stared at me.

“But how?”

I looked at Claire.

She nodded slowly.

“Tell her.”

So I did.

“Fourteen years ago, before you were born, I was working at the hospital.”

Lily’s expression changed.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“I met your father there.”

My husband looked confused.

“Emily was one of the nurses who cared for Claire.”

Claire nodded.

“She was the only person I trusted.”

I continued.

“After you were born, Claire was terrified. She knew Daniel wanted you dead. She knew your grandfather was involved. She believed everyone around her could be bought.”

“So why me?”

“Because I couldn’t be.”

I swallowed.

“Your mother asked me to help her disappear.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“And you agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you marry Dad?”

I looked at my husband.

“Because he loved you.”

He closed his eyes.

“And because I loved you.”

Lily looked between us.

“But I thought you were my stepmother.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Claire answered.

“Because if Daniel knew Emily was your biological mother, you’d become an even bigger target.”

Lily looked at Claire.

“You knew?”

“I knew everything.”

“Then why did you let me call her Mom?”

Claire cried.

“Because she was your mother.”

Lily turned toward me.

For a moment, I thought she would walk away.

Instead, she whispered:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I knelt in front of her.

“Because I was afraid I’d lose you.”

She started crying.

“You never would.”

“I know that now.”

She threw her arms around me.

I held her as tightly as I could.

Behind us, Claire began crying too.

For the first time, all three of us stood together.

Mother.

Mother.

Daughter.

Then Ramirez interrupted.

“I’m sorry, but we have another problem.”

He held up his phone.

“The trust transfer was completed.”

“To Carter Family Holdings?”

He nodded.

“There’s more.”

He showed us the transaction.

The money hadn’t gone into the company.

It had been transferred to a private account.

The account holder’s name was:

Daniel Mercer.

My husband stared at the screen.

“How?”

Ramirez looked at Claire.

“Who had access to your original documents?”

Claire shook her head.

“No one.”

Then Lily suddenly spoke.

“Wait.”

She reached into her backpack.

“I have something.”

She pulled out the silver bracelet.

The one Claire had sent her.

“Look at the clasp.”

I examined it.

There was a tiny symbol I’d never noticed.

A triangle.

Inside it were the numbers:

4179.

Ramirez’s eyes widened.

“That’s not an engraving.”

“What is it?”

“A security code.”

He pulled out the flash drive Claire had left us.

“We assumed 4179 was the password.”

He entered it.

A hidden folder appeared.

One file.

FINAL BENEFICIARY.

He opened it.

A scanned document appeared.

The beneficiary wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Lily.

It wasn’t me.

It wasn’t my husband.

It was Claire.

But Claire was legally dead.

Ramirez stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire’s face went pale.

“No.”

“What?”

She whispered:

“That’s why Daniel wanted me dead.”

“Why?”

She looked at Lily.

“Because the trust was never supposed to belong to you.”

Lily frowned.

“Then who?”

Claire looked at me.

“Your mother.”

I stared at her.

“Me?”

Claire nodded.

“The trust was designed to pass through me to you.”

She paused.

“But after I disappeared, I changed the beneficiary.”

“To Lily?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Claire took my hand.

“To the woman I trusted to raise my daughter.”

I stared at her.

“That’s why the documents were forged.”

Ramirez understood.

“Daniel needed Emily to be the legal beneficiary so he could force the transfer.”

Claire nodded.

“But he didn’t know the original trust had a second clause.”

“What clause?”

Claire smiled sadly.

“The money cannot be transferred unless the beneficiary willingly gives it away.”

My husband looked at the screen.

“So Daniel hasn’t won.”

“No.”

Claire looked at Lily.

“He has nothing.”

Suddenly, a loud alarm sounded throughout the hospital.

Ramirez looked toward the stairwell.

“What’s happening?”

An officer came running.

“Detective!”

“What?”

“Rachel is gone.”

Ramirez froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“She escaped during the confusion.”

My stomach dropped.

“Where did she go?”

The officer handed him a note.

Ramirez read it.

Then looked at us.

The note contained only one sentence:

If you want the truth about Daniel, come to the cemetery.

Claire closed her eyes.

“He’s there.”

“Who?”

She looked at Lily.

“Your grandfather.”

And for the first time, Claire looked more frightened of her own father than she had ever looked of Daniel.

“He’s been waiting for us.”
