For the first time in years, there was no one following us.
No black cars.
No mysterious phone calls.
No envelopes without return addresses.
No men watching from across the street.
Just silence.
Six months passed.
The investigation became international news. The Guardians were dismantled, the stolen money was recovered, and hundreds of victims finally learned what had happened to their families.
But I still had one unanswered question.
My mother.
Not the trust.
Not Daniel.
Not the Guardians.
Her.
One evening, Lily found me sitting at the kitchen table with the old photograph.
“You still miss her.”
I smiled sadly.
“Every day.”
She sat beside me.
“Then maybe you should finish her story.”
“What do you mean?”
Lily reached into a drawer.
She pulled out the black box we’d found in Room 317.
“There was something underneath it.”
I opened the box.
At the bottom was a tiny envelope.
My name was written across it.
Emily — Open only after the trust is destroyed.
My hands began to tremble.
I opened it.
My mother’s handwriting appeared again.
My beautiful Emily,
If you’re reading this, then the trust is gone.
That means you made the choice I prayed you would make.
You chose your daughter over wealth.
I always knew you would.
There is something I never told you.
Your father did not abandon us.
He was protecting you.
Michael Carter was never your biological father, but he was the man who raised you from a distance.
Your real father was Daniel Mercer.
But he never knew the truth.
I changed your records so he would never find you.
I did this because I discovered what he was becoming.
I wanted you to grow up free of the Mercer name.
And I succeeded.
You became something he never could.
Kind.
Brave.
And capable of loving someone without asking what they could give you.
Lily is proof of that.
Don’t let the Mercer family define you.
Your blood is only an accident.
Your choices are who you are.
Love,
Mom.
I couldn’t stop crying.
Lily wrapped her arms around me.
“She knew you.”
“Yes.”
“She knew you’d choose me.”
I nodded.
“She always did.”
Then Lily noticed something.
“There are more pages.”
I turned the letter over.
A final sentence had been written at the bottom.
There is one person still alive who knows the entire truth.
I frowned.
“Who?”
A name followed.
Michael Mercer.
I looked toward the window.
Michael.
Daniel’s son.
The man who had saved us.
The man who had known my mother.
The man who had disappeared after the trial.
I called his number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
“Emily.”
I froze.
“Michael?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
Silence.
Then:
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find this letter.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother didn’t tell you everything.”
My heart began pounding.
“What did she leave out?”
He sighed.
“The Guardians weren’t created to protect the Mercer family.”
“Then why?”
“They were created to protect something much older.”
“What?”
“Something your mother discovered beneath the trust.”
“What did she discover?”
Michael’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Evidence that the Mercer family isn’t the only family with a bloodline like yours.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means Lily isn’t the last heir.”
I stood.
“Then who is?”
Michael answered:
“There’s another girl.”
“Where?”
“Living in your city.”
My blood went cold.
“What’s her name?”
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
“Her name is Sophie.”
I looked at Lily.
She had heard everything.
“Who is Sophie?”
Michael’s voice came through the phone one final time.
“The other granddaughter.”
The line went dead.
Lily stared at me.
I stared back.
For six months, we’d believed the nightmare was finally over.
We were wrong.
Because somewhere in our city was another girl connected to the trust.
Another heir.
Another target.
And someone had just started looking for her.
