The countdown continued.
23:59:41
I stared at my name on the screen.
“Why am I the experiment?”
My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Because when you were born, they discovered something they hadn’t seen before.”
“What?”
“You didn’t inherit the resistance.”
She swallowed.
“You developed it.”
Lily stepped toward me.
“What’s the difference?”
My mother answered:
“The others were born with the genetic trait. Your mother wasn’t.”
She looked at me.
“You changed.”
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
My mother pointed toward the screen.
“That’s why they monitored you from childhood.”
All those strange doctors.
The medical tests I’d forgotten.
The letters I’d never understood.
The anonymous appointments my mother had always refused.
It suddenly made sense.
I looked at her.
“You knew.”
“I knew they were watching.”
“But you never told me.”
“I wanted you to live normally.”
Dr. Shaw laughed.
“You were never normal, Emily.”
Michael raised his weapon.
“Shut up.”
Shaw ignored him.
“Do you know why Daniel was obsessed with Lily?”
“Because of the resistance.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Because Lily inherited something from Emily.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Adaptability.”
Shaw looked almost excited.
“Your body doesn’t simply resist the treatment.”
She smiled.
“It learns from it.”
Lily whispered:
“Like an immune system.”
“Exactly.”
My mother stepped forward.
“That’s why Shaw wants Emily.”
Shaw nodded.
“Emily is the original.”
I looked at the countdown.
22:17:09
“What happens tomorrow?”
Shaw answered:
“The treatment is activated.”
“And if I refuse?”
“You don’t have to agree.”
She smiled.
“The activation happens remotely.”
Michael looked at the screens.
“Can we stop it?”
“Yes.”
Everyone turned toward my mother.
She pointed to a server room.
“The original control system is there.”
“We destroy it?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“That would activate the failsafe.”
“Then what?”
“We need to reverse it.”
“How?”
My mother looked at Lily.
“With her.”
Lily stepped forward.
“Tell me what to do.”
My mother took the silver pendant from around Lily’s neck.
Inside was the tiny vial.
“This contains the neutralizing compound.”
I stared at it.
“Why did you hide it in her pendant?”
“Because I knew one day you’d need it.”
Michael checked his weapon.
“Then let’s get to the server.”
We moved through the laboratory.
But before we reached the door, a familiar voice came over the speakers.
Daniel.
“Emily.”
I stopped.
“You survived.”
His voice sounded weak.
“Of course I did.”
“You think Shaw is your enemy.”
“She is.”
“No.”
He laughed.
“She’s worse than me.”
I looked at the camera.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Silence.
Finally he said:
“Shaw didn’t create the treatment.”
My mother closed her eyes.
Daniel continued:
“Your mother did.”
I turned toward her.
“Mom?”
She looked at me.
“I was young.”
“You created it?”
“I discovered the original formula.”
“Then Shaw stole it?”
“Yes.”
Daniel laughed.
“And that’s why she hates you.”
I stared at the screen.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Because I wanted to use it.”
“On me?”
“No.”
He paused.
“On myself.”
I remembered the aging photographs.
“You became Subject Seven.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I was dying.”
He coughed.
“I thought immortality would save me.”
“And instead?”
“It destroyed me.”
For the first time, I heard regret in his voice.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
The screen went black.
My mother touched my arm.
“We need to keep moving.”
We reached the server room.
The door opened.
Inside were hundreds of machines.
At the center was a single terminal.
It displayed:
FINAL SUBJECT: EMILY CARTER
ACTIVATION: AUGUST 22, 2026
STATUS: READY
Lily stepped forward.
“What do we do?”
My mother pointed to the terminal.
“Enter your mother’s name.”
I typed it.
The system rejected it.
ACCESS DENIED.
My mother frowned.
“Try your own name.”
I typed:
Emily Carter.
The screen changed.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
Then:
WELCOME BACK, SUBJECT ONE.
I froze.
“I was never Subject One.”
My mother shook her head.
“Yes, you were.”
She looked at Lily.
“Your mother was the first child born after the treatment.”
My heart stopped.
“Then who was Subject One before me?”
My mother whispered:
“Me.”
The terminal began counting down.
00:10:00
Ten minutes.
My mother looked at me.
“Emily, if you activate this system, the treatment will be destroyed forever.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Everyone on that list will remain under Shaw’s control.”
I looked at Lily.
She nodded.
“Do it.”
I placed my hand on the scanner.
The system asked one final question:
DO YOU CONSENT TO TERMINATE THE PROGRAM?
I pressed:
YES.
The entire laboratory shook.
Alarms screamed.
And then the screen displayed:
TERMINATION INITIATED.
But beneath it appeared another message.
ONE SUBJECT CANNOT BE TERMINATED.
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
The answer appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO.
My mother stared at the screen.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“Who is Subject Zero?”
She whispered:
“Your grandmother.”
Then Margaret’s voice came through the intercom.
“Emily.”
I looked up.
She was standing behind the glass.
And she was smiling.
“Now you finally know why I survived.”
