Part3 : MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON

I didn’t sleep that night.

The message sat on my phone like a stone.

I know what they did before.

At 2:13 in the morning, another message arrived.

This time, there was a photograph attached.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was a picture of my living room.

My house.

My furniture.

My family standing around my dining table.

And in the corner of the photograph was a stack of documents.

My documents.

I zoomed in.

One of them was the deed to my house.

Another was a bank statement.

And beside them was something I hadn’t seen in years.

My old signature.

Someone had been going through my things.

I immediately called Margaret.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Evelyn?”

“I think someone has been inside my house.”

Her voice changed.

“Are you there now?”

“Yes.”

“Lock every door. Don’t touch anything. I’ll come over.”

Twenty-five minutes later, Margaret arrived.

We searched the house together.

Nothing appeared broken.

Nothing obvious was missing.

But when we reached my bedroom, I noticed something.

The bottom drawer of my dresser was open.

I always kept it locked.

Inside was the small metal box where I stored my most important papers.

The box was still there.

But the lock was broken.

Margaret looked at me.

“Did anyone else know about this?”

I swallowed.

“Daniel.”

She nodded slowly.

“And Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“And Caleb?”

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

The next morning, I checked my bank accounts.

One account was missing money.

Not much.

Just enough to make me doubt myself.

$2,500.

I stared at the screen.

Then I called the bank.

The withdrawal had been made three weeks earlier.

Three weeks.

Before the lake.

Before the video.

Before I finally understood what was happening.

“Who authorized it?” I asked.

The representative hesitated.

“It was an electronic transfer.”

“To whom?”

There was a pause.

Then she gave me a name.

My stomach tightened.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was Caleb.

My grandson.

The same boy I’d paid for every birthday.

The same boy I’d helped with school expenses.

The same boy I’d defended whenever Daniel complained that he was irresponsible.

I hung up.

For several minutes, I just sat there.

Then my phone rang.

Caleb.

I watched his name flash across the screen.

I let it ring.

He called again.

And again.

Finally, I answered.

“Grandma?”

His voice sounded different.

No laughter.

No confidence.

Just fear.

“What do you want, Caleb?”

“I need to explain.”

“You can explain.”

There was silence.

Then he whispered:

“Dad told me to do it.”

My blood ran cold.

“Do what?”

“The money. The video. Everything.”

I closed my eyes.

“Everything?”

“He said you were going to cut us out.”

I said nothing.

Caleb continued.

“He said if we scared you enough, you’d change your will.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

The lake.

The filming.

The bank account.

The missing documents.

It hadn’t been a prank.

It had been a plan.

My own son had been planning against me.

And my grandson had helped him.

I finally asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Caleb, what else did your father tell you to do?”

He started crying.

“Grandma…”

“What else?”

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“He said the lake wasn’t supposed to be that deep.”

I felt the room tilt.

Then Caleb said something that made my blood run colder than the lake ever had.

“Grandma, Dad didn’t know I was going to push you that hard.”

I stood perfectly still.

Because now I understood.

Daniel may have planned to frighten me.

But Caleb had gone further.

Much further.

And for the first time, I wondered whether my grandson was calling me because he was sorry…

or because he was afraid I had finally discovered the truth.
