Part11 : MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD GRANDSON

I stared at the photograph.

It showed three people sitting at a restaurant table.

Daniel was one of them.

Vanessa was another.

And the third person was Arthur Bell.

But that wasn’t what frightened me.

It was the date printed in the corner.

The photograph had been taken two days before my husband died.

I looked at Margaret.

“Why would Daniel have this?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

I turned the photograph over again.

Daniel’s handwriting was unmistakable.

Mom, I finally know who did it.

I looked at the officer.

“Can I see my son?”

“Yes. But only briefly.”

Caleb stood.

“I want to come.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Grandma—”

“You’ve done enough.”

The words came out harsher than I intended.

His face fell.

I immediately regretted them.

“I don’t mean that,” I said. “I just need to speak to your father alone.”

He nodded.

“I’ll wait.”

I followed the officer down the corridor.

Daniel was lying in a hospital bed.

There was a bandage around his head.

A bruise covered one side of his face.

For a moment, I didn’t see the man who had betrayed me.

I saw the little boy who used to fall asleep on my lap.

Then he opened his eyes.

“Mom.”

I stood beside the bed.

“What happened?”

He looked away.

“Arthur.”

My heart stopped.

“You knew him?”

“I knew him my whole life.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Dad told me never to.”

I stared at him.

“Your father?”

Daniel nodded.

“He owed Arthur money.”

“What kind of money?”

“Business money.”

He closed his eyes.

“Dad borrowed from him. A lot.”

“And when your father died?”

“Arthur wanted it back.”

I sat down.

“And you inherited the debt.”

“Yes.”

“Three hundred and eighty thousand?”

Daniel nodded.

“But that’s not all.”

I waited.

“Arthur knew about your money.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“He knew everything.”

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Your husband told him.”

I felt something inside me crack.

“My husband?”

“He trusted Arthur.”

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“But Arthur wasn’t his friend.”

I leaned closer.

“What was he?”

Daniel whispered:

“His partner.”

I frowned.

“I already knew that.”

“No, Mom.”

He shook his head.

“You knew they were business partners.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You didn’t know what they were really partners in.”

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then lowered his voice.

“Money was being moved through your husband’s company.”

“How much?”

“Millions.”

I couldn’t speak.

“And when Dad died,” Daniel continued, “Arthur needed someone else to take the blame.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“You.”

The room seemed to go silent.

“What?”

“He put some of the accounts in your name.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I saw the paperwork.”

“No.”

“Mom, that’s why they wanted your signature.”

I stood abruptly.

“The lake?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“The lake was supposed to frighten you into signing everything over.”

“And if I refused?”

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“Arthur told Vanessa there was another way.”

“What way?”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“He wanted you declared incompetent.”

I felt sick.

“And then?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Then he planned to take control of everything.”

I stared at my son.

For the first time, I understood why he had been so afraid.

He wasn’t the mastermind.

He was trapped.

But that didn’t excuse what he had done.

“You still helped them.”

“I know.”

“You let Caleb push me.”

“I know.”

“You watched me almost drown.”

Tears rolled down his face.

“I know.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I stood.

“I may never forgive you.”

He nodded.

“I don’t expect you to.”

I turned toward the door.

“Mom?”

I stopped.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“Arthur isn’t running from the police.”

I turned around.

“What do you mean?”

“He wants the evidence.”

“Why?”

“Because the evidence doesn’t just prove what they did to you.”

His voice dropped.

“It proves what my father did before he died.”

I stared at him.

“What did he do?”

Daniel whispered:

“He didn’t just steal the money.”

“He stole it from people who are still looking for it.”

A chill ran through me.

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

Then he said:

“People much more dangerous than Arthur.”

And suddenly, I realized the lake had never been the end of my family’s secret.

It had only opened the door to something much bigger.
