PART 10 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

The room stayed silent long after the call ended.

Nobody wanted to speak first.

Because sometimes the truth is so painful that saying anything feels like making it more real.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman whose picture was on my childhood dresser.

The woman whose voice I still remembered singing to me when I was sick.

The woman who held my hand when I got married.

Was she part of this?

Was she the person who helped take me away?

I looked at Elizabeth.

The woman who gave birth to me.

She looked devastated.

“No…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“She wouldn’t.”

Richard looked down.

And that scared me.

Because he didn’t look surprised.

“Richard.”

He slowly raised his eyes.

“Tell me.”

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me what you know.”

He sighed.

“I was hoping you would never have to hear this.”

My anger exploded.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

The room became quiet.

I pointed toward the documents.

“Everyone decided for me.”

“My father.”

“Karen.”

“My husband.”

“Richard.”

“And now I find out the woman who raised me might have been involved.”

My voice cracked.

“I deserve the truth.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

“You do.”

He walked back to the table and opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of my father.

And the woman who raised me.

My mother.

But there was something different about it.

They weren’t smiling.

They weren’t a happy family.

They looked scared.

On the back of the photo was a date.

The same week I was born.

Richard pointed at it.

“Your mother wasn’t the person who planned everything.”

I stared at him.

“Then what did she do?”

“She was manipulated.”

“By who?”

He looked at me.

“Thomas.”

My father.

Again.

Always my father.

“He convinced her that Elizabeth had abandoned you.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

“He told her Elizabeth didn’t want the baby.”

I shook my head.

“That’s a lie.”

“Yes.”

“But she believed him?”

Richard nodded.

“She was pregnant herself at the time.”

I froze.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“You said pregnant?”

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

I felt confused.

“My mother was pregnant?”

“The woman who raised you.”

I slowly sat down.

“What are you saying?”

Richard took a breath.

“Thomas told her that Elizabeth’s baby was unwanted.”

He paused.

“He told her she could give the child a better life.”

I covered my mouth.

“So she thought she was saving me.”

“Yes.”

“But she wasn’t.”

“No.”

Richard looked at me.

“She was helping Thomas hide what he had done.”

Karen suddenly stood.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

“If she thought she was saving Amelia…”

Her eyes filled with confusion.

“Why did she help hide the inheritance?”

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because Thomas told her the money would protect you.”

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“He used everyone.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

My father had built an entire web of lies.

And every person around him became trapped inside it.

But one question remained.

“What about Sophia?”

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the biggest mystery.

If Sophia was Elizabeth’s daughter…

Why had she disappeared?

Why had nobody looked for her?

Richard reached into the box again.

This time he pulled out a letter.

The envelope was old.

But the handwriting on the front made my heart stop.

It was my father’s.

“For Sophia, if she survives.”

I stared.

“If she survives?”

Elizabeth grabbed the letter.

Her hands shook.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked away.

“I don’t know.”

“Open it.”

He hesitated.

Then handed it to me.

I slowly opened the letter.

The first line made my entire body go cold.

“Sophia, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.”

I continued.

“I know you remember the night at the hospital. I know you saw what happened.”

My breathing stopped.

Sophia had been there.

She had witnessed everything.

The letter continued.

“But what you don’t know is that I did not take Amelia because of the money alone.”

I frowned.

Not because of money?

Then why?

I kept reading.

“I took her because Elizabeth was about to reveal something that would destroy all of us.”

My eyes moved faster.

What could be worse than stealing a child?

What could be worse than changing identities?

Then I reached the next sentence.

And everything changed.

“Elizabeth was not the only person who knew about the inheritance.”

I looked up.

Karen whispered:

“Who else knew?”

I looked back at the letter.

The next words were written clearly.

“The person who created the trust was not my father.”

My heart stopped.

My grandfather.

The man who supposedly left the inheritance.

My father had been lying about him too.

The letter continued.

“The money was never meant for Amelia alone.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“It was meant for all three daughters.”

Three daughters.

Me.

Karen.

Sophia.

Then why had my father hidden us?

The final line of the letter was the one that broke me.

“The truth about your mother is hidden in the original birth records.”

I looked at Elizabeth.

“My mother?”

She looked terrified.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Sophia.

One sentence.

“Do not trust Elizabeth yet.”

My heart dropped.

Another message appeared.

“Because she is the reason our father did what he did.”

I looked up slowly.

Elizabeth’s face had gone completely white.

And for the first time…

I wondered if the woman who gave me life…

Had secrets of her own.
