PART 13 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

The darkness swallowed the room.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was the rain hitting the windows.

Then my husband grabbed his phone and turned on the flashlight.

The beam moved across the kitchen.

The chairs.

The table.

The open box of documents.

Everything was exactly where it had been.

Except Elizabeth.

She was gone.

My biological mother.

The woman I had spent my entire life searching for without even knowing it.

She had disappeared in the middle of the chaos.

And all she left behind was one sentence.

“I know where she is.”

Karen picked up the note.

Her hands were shaking.

“She left this.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Who?”

Karen looked at him.

“The fourth daughter.”

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the first time we all admitted it.

There was another person.

Another child.

Another missing piece of a puzzle that had destroyed generations.

My husband looked at me.

“Are you okay?”

I almost laughed.

Was I okay?

I had discovered my name wasn’t my name.

My parents weren’t who I thought they were.

My sister wasn’t my only sister.

And now there was another daughter hidden somewhere.

“No.”

I whispered.

“I’m not okay.”

Then I looked at the note.

“But I need answers.”

We searched the house.

Every room.

Every corner.

Every possible place Elizabeth could have gone.

The front door was still locked.

The back door was still locked.

The windows were closed.

It was as if she had vanished.

Richard stood near the table, looking at the note.

“This handwriting…”

I turned.

“What?”

He touched the paper carefully.

“I’ve seen it before.”

My heart tightened.

“Where?”

“In Thomas’s files.”

Karen stepped forward.

“What are you saying?”

Richard looked at us.

“This isn’t Elizabeth’s handwriting.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then whose is it?”

Richard looked at the note again.

And his face changed.

A memory.

A fear.

Recognition.

“It belongs to someone Thomas was terrified of.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

He slowly said:

“Your grandmother.”

I froze.

“My grandmother?”

Richard nodded.

“Your father’s mother.”

“But she died before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could she write this?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t have to.

Everyone understood.

She didn’t write it recently.

She wrote it years ago.

Richard opened the old notebook again.

“There’s something I never told you.”

I stared at him.

“That’s becoming a common theme tonight.”

He looked ashamed.

“I found Thomas’s journal after his funeral.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because I found something else.”

“What?”

He flipped to a page near the back.

A page torn almost completely out.

“The missing pages.”

Karen frowned.

“Missing?”

“Yes.”

“Who removed them?”

Richard looked at the empty space.

“I thought Thomas did.”

“But?”

“But I was wrong.”

He pulled out another document.

“This was inside the notebook cover.”

I read the paper.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

At the top was a title.

THE CARTER FAMILY CHILDREN

My eyes moved down.

First name:

Amelia Rose Carter.

Second:

Karen Elizabeth Harper.

Third:

Sophia Carter.

Then the fourth line.

My breath stopped.

Because the fourth name was not familiar.

Not even slightly.

Lydia Grace Carter.

I looked up.

“Who is Lydia?”

Nobody answered.

Then Richard said:

“She was your father’s first child.”

My stomach dropped.

“First child?”

“Yes.”

“Before me?”

“Yes.”

“But Elizabeth?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

The room became cold.

“Then who was her mother?”

Richard looked at the documents.

“That’s the part nobody knew.”

A pause.

“Not even Thomas.”

My phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

From Sophia.

I opened it.

“You found Lydia.”

My hands froze.

How did she know?

Another message appeared.

“Now you need to know why Dad erased her.”

I typed quickly.

“Who is Lydia?”

The reply came instantly.

“The daughter who knew the truth before any of us.”

I swallowed.

“Where is she?”

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, a message arrived.

“She has been closer to you than you realize.”

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?”

Karen looked at me.

“What did she say?”

I didn’t answer.

Because another message came through.

A photograph.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of me.

Not an old picture.

A recent one.

Taken today.

Inside my own house.

I looked closer.

Behind me in the reflection of the mirror…

Someone was standing there.

Watching me.

A woman.

Older.

Familiar.

The woman I had seen in old family photos.

The woman everyone said had died.

My father’s mother.

My grandmother.

But that wasn’t possible.

Because beneath the picture was one sentence:

“Ask your grandmother why she never died.”

I dropped the phone.

Because suddenly the biggest secret wasn’t the inheritance.

It wasn’t the missing daughters.

It wasn’t my father.

It was this:

Someone in my family had been alive all along.

And they had been watching me.
