PART 19 — THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR THREE YEARS

The words hung in the air.

“You were never the target.”

I stared at my grandmother.

Margaret Carter.

The woman who had been dead my entire life.

The woman who had watched from the shadows.

The woman who admitted she allowed my father to take me.

My mind couldn’t process it.

“What does that mean?”

My voice came out weaker than I expected.

Margaret didn’t answer immediately.

She looked around the room.

At the old documents.

The photographs.

The people whose secrets had destroyed my life.

Then she looked back at me.

“It means Thomas never wanted you.”

The sentence hurt more than I expected.

Even after everything.

Even after learning the truth.

A part of me still hoped my father had chosen me.

That somewhere beneath all the lies…

I mattered.

Margaret saw my expression.

“That is not what I mean.”

“Then explain.”

She walked closer.

“Thomas wanted what you represented.”

I frowned.

“The inheritance?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“The evidence?”

Again, she shook her head.

“Then what?”

Margaret looked at Elizabeth.

“He wanted control.”

She sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where my entire world had collapsed.

“I need you to understand something about Thomas.”

Everyone listened.

“Your father was not born cruel.”

I almost laughed.

“Don’t defend him.”

“I’m not.”

Margaret’s voice was calm.

“I’m explaining him.”

I crossed my arms.

“He was my son.”

The words surprised me.

After all this time, she still loved him.

“And that is why I know what he became.”

She opened the suitcase.

Inside were more documents.

More secrets.

But this time…

They were different.

These were personal.

“This is Thomas’s medical file.”

I looked confused.

“Why do we need that?”

“Because the reason he changed was not money.”

She placed the file on the table.

“It was fear.”

Richard stepped closer.

“What kind of fear?”

Margaret looked at him.

“The fear that he would lose everything he believed belonged to him.”

She opened the file.

Inside was a report.

I read the first line.

THOMAS CARTER — PATERNITY CONFIRMATION

My heart stopped.

“Paternity?”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

“What is this?”

She looked at Elizabeth.

Then me.

“This is the truth Thomas spent his entire life hiding.”

I felt cold.

“About what?”

Margaret whispered:

“Thomas discovered he was not my husband’s biological son.”

Nobody spoke.

The room froze.

My father.

The man who destroyed everything.

Had been carrying his own secret.

Karen stared.

“So Thomas wasn’t really a Carter?”

Margaret nodded.

“Not by blood.”

I looked at the document.

“Then why hide it?”

“Because the Carter name was everything to him.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.

“He believed if people knew the truth, he would lose his power.”

I shook my head.

“So he did all of this because he was afraid of losing a name?”

“A name.”

“A family.”

“A legacy.”

She looked at me.

“Things he never truly owned.”

I looked at Elizabeth.

“Then what about my birth?”

Margaret became quiet.

“That is where everything started.”

She took a deep breath.

“Thomas discovered Daniel was the rightful heir to the Carter trust.”

Daniel.

My real father.

“Because Daniel was your grandfather’s biological grandson?”

“Yes.”

“Not Thomas?”

“Yes.”

My mind spun.

“So Thomas wasn’t even supposed to inherit.”

“No.”

“And Daniel was.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the phone.

Daniel was still connected.

“You knew?”

His voice came through softly.

“Yes.”

“Your whole life?”

“No.”

A pause.

“I found out shortly before you were born.”

My heart tightened.

“So Thomas knew too.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s why he hated you.”

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“Yes.”

Margaret continued.

“Thomas believed everything was being taken away from him.”

She looked at me.

“His name.”

“His inheritance.”

“His future.”

“So he created his own plan.”

I whispered.

“To take everything.”

Margaret nodded.

“He planned to remove Daniel.”

“To control Elizabeth.”

“And to use the children as pieces in his game.”

My stomach turned.

“Pieces?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Karen.

“At first, he planned to take only Amelia.”

Then at me.

“But something happened.”

“What?”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“Lydia.”

The fourth daughter.

“She discovered his plan.”

I looked at Richard.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“She was the first person who tried to stop him.”

“Then why did nobody hear about her?”

Margaret looked down.

“Because Thomas made her disappear.”

The room became cold.

“Did he hurt her?”

Margaret didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Margaret.”

She finally looked at me.

“No.”

A pause.

“But he convinced everyone she was gone.”

“How?”

“He changed her identity.”

My heart stopped.

“Like he did to me?”

Margaret nodded.

“Exactly.”

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Lydia.

I opened it.

Only three words.

“Ask Margaret everything.”

I looked at my grandmother.

“Lydia knows you’re here.”

Margaret nodded.

“She wanted me to tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because she knows the final truth.”

“What final truth?”

Margaret reached into the suitcase.

And pulled out an envelope.

The paper was old.

But the handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

Thomas Carter.

My father.

Except this time…

The name on the envelope wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Karen’s.

It wasn’t Sophia’s.

It wasn’t Lydia’s.

It said:

“For the daughter I never found.”

My heart stopped.

“Another daughter?”

Margaret nodded.

“No.”

“Then who?”

She looked directly at me.

And said:

“The daughter Thomas spent his entire life searching for.”

I felt a chill.

“Who is she?”

Margaret opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

A baby.

A hospital bracelet.

And a name.

I looked at the bracelet.

Then the name.

My hands went numb.

Because the name written there was:

Amelia Rose Carter.

My name.

But below it was another date.

A different birthday.

A different hospital.

A different beginning.

Margaret whispered:

“Thomas didn’t steal you.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Then what did he do?”

Her answer destroyed the last piece of my identity.

“He found another Amelia…”

“And he chose the wrong one.”
