PART 6 TITLE: THE VISIT THAT CHANGED OUR HOME

For the next six days, Emily talked about nothing except motorcycles.

She carried the little red model everywhere.

To breakfast.

To physical therapy.

Even to bed.

Every night, she placed it carefully beside her pillow.

And every morning, she reminded me how many days remained until the charity event.

On Wednesday, I called the community center director.

Her name was Mrs. Peterson.

When I mentioned Daniel Brooks, she immediately recognized him.

“Oh, Daniel,” she said warmly. “He’s been helping us for years.”

I relaxed.

She explained that his club had raised money for accessible playground equipment and transportation programs.

Then her voice softened.

“He’s been especially involved since losing his daughter.”

I looked toward Emily’s bedroom.

“Yes. He told us about Grace.”

Mrs. Peterson sighed.

“That little girl was his whole world.”

She told me Daniel had become withdrawn after Grace passed away.

For a long time, he stopped attending community events.

He rarely spoke about his daughter.

Then, gradually, he began volunteering again.

“Helping children seems to give him some peace,” she said.

I understood.

Before hanging up, I confirmed the event details.

Saturday morning.

Ten o’clock.

At the same community center.

When I told Emily, she almost shouted with joy.

On Friday evening, my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

“Sarah, just checking that you and Emily are still coming.”

“We wouldn’t miss it.”

He chuckled.

“Good.”

Then he hesitated.

“There’s something else.”

“What is it?”

“Would you mind if I brought a small surprise for her?”

I smiled.

“Daniel, you’ve already done enough.”

“Please.”

There was something gentle in his voice.

“Just something I think Grace would have wanted.”

I thought about the little red motorcycle.

Then I said yes.

After the call, Emily looked at me.

“Was that Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He’s looking forward to seeing you.”

She smiled.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him too.”

Then she picked up her toy motorcycle.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Do you think Grace can see us from heaven?”

I sat beside her.

“I don’t know exactly how heaven works, sweetheart.”

Emily thought for a moment.

Then she smiled.

“I hope she knows I’m taking care of her daddy.”

That was the moment I realized something important.

Daniel wasn’t the only one helping someone heal.
