PART 5 TITLE: THE BIKER’S UNEXPECTED INVITATION

“Emily,” Daniel said, “I have a question for you.”

She straightened in her wheelchair.

“What?”

“Would you like to meet some of my friends?”

“Are they bikers too?”

“Every one of them.”

Her eyes widened.

“Do they have tattoos?”

Daniel laughed.

“Most of them.”

“Big motorcycles?”

“Some of the biggest you’ve ever seen.”

Emily turned toward me.

“Mommy, can I?”

I hesitated.

I had known Daniel for less than twenty minutes.

He seemed kind.

But I was still a mother protecting her daughter.

Daniel noticed my concern.

“Ma’am, there’s no pressure.”

He stood.

“My riding club is helping with a children’s charity event next Saturday.”

He explained that the club had been working with the community center for several years.

They raised money for families who needed medical equipment and transportation assistance.

They also organized family events.

“Everything is supervised,” he said. “And nobody has to get on a motorcycle.”

That relieved me.

Emily tugged at my sleeve.

“Please, Mommy.”

I looked at her.

She was smiling in a way I hadn’t seen for months.

A real smile.

Not the brave smile she wore when people asked if she was feeling okay.

I knelt beside her.

“Would you really like to go?”

She nodded vigorously.

“More than anything.”

Daniel gave me the event details and the community center director’s contact information.

I promised to call after checking everything.

Before leaving, he turned toward Emily.

“Now, about that red motorcycle.”

She looked down at the model in her hands.

“Oh.”

Her smile faded.

She started to give it back.

But Daniel gently closed her fingers around it.

“No, sweetheart.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“I want you to keep it.”

I gasped.

“Daniel, you don’t have to do that.”

He shook his head.

“I know.”

He looked at the motorcycle.

“Grace gave me that because she wanted me to remember her.”

Emily listened carefully.

“And I think the best way to honor her is to help another little girl smile.”

Emily looked at me.

“Can I really keep it, Mommy?”

I couldn’t speak.

I simply nodded.

She wrapped her arms around Daniel’s neck.

“Thank you!”

The huge biker hugged her gently.

And for the first time that afternoon, he smiled without sadness in his eyes.
