PART 9 TITLE: THE PROMISE THE BIG BIKER FINALLY KEPT

Later that afternoon, Daniel led us to a motorcycle parked near the event area.

It was a beautiful red touring bike.

Large.

Shiny.

With chrome handlebars and a comfortable passenger seat.

Emily stared at it in amazement.

“That’s yours?”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s my girl.”

She laughed.

“You call your motorcycle a girl?”

“Sure do.”

“What’s her name?”

He looked at the fuel tank.

“Grace.”

My eyes filled again.

Daniel explained that he had named the motorcycle after his daughter.

For years, he’d kept it stored in his garage.

He barely rode it.

Every time he looked at the passenger seat, he remembered the little girl who had never gotten her promised ride.

Then Emily reached for his hand.

“Can I touch it?”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

He made sure the motorcycle was parked securely, switched off, and cool before guiding us closer.

Emily reached out and touched the red paint.

“It’s beautiful.”

Daniel nodded.

“Thank you.”

She pointed toward the passenger seat.

“Is that where Grace was supposed to sit?”

His smile faded.

“Yes.”

Emily looked at the seat for a long time.

Then she looked up.

“Maybe you can take her picture with you when you ride.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Her picture.”

Emily pointed toward the clubhouse table.

“Then she can still go with you.”

I watched him swallow.

For a moment, he looked as though he might cry again.

Then he knelt beside her.

“You know something, Emily?”

“What?”

“That’s the best idea anybody’s given me in years.”

He reached inside his vest and removed a small laminated photograph of Grace.

It was the same picture from the display case.

He had carried it with him all along.

Daniel held it up.

“Would you help me put this in the little holder on my bike?”

Emily nodded eagerly.

With his help, she placed the photograph inside a clear protective compartment near the dashboard.

Daniel closed it carefully.

Then he stepped back.

He stared at the picture.

And he smiled.

A real smile.

Not the sad one I’d seen the week before.

For the first time, the motorcycle no longer seemed like a reminder of everything he’d lost.

It had become a reminder of everything Grace had given him.

That afternoon, Daniel took the motorcycle out for a short ride as part of the organized charity event.

Emily and I watched from the viewing area.

When he returned, he parked beside us.

He removed his helmet.

And he was smiling.

Emily waved.

“Did Grace like the ride?”

Daniel looked at the little photograph.

Then back at my daughter.

“I think she loved it.”
