PART 8 TITLE: THE GIFT THAT BROUGHT HER MOTHER TO TEARS

After the introductions, Daniel asked us to follow him toward a covered outdoor area.

There was a large table surrounded by balloons.

A red cloth covered something in the middle.

Emily leaned forward.

“What’s under there?”

Daniel grinned.

“You’ll have to see.”

Big Tony lifted the cloth.

Underneath was a handmade display case.

Inside sat another red motorcycle model.

This one was larger than the first.

Beautifully detailed.

With chrome exhaust pipes, black leather-style seats, and tiny working wheels.

Beside it was a photograph.

A smiling little girl with light brown hair.

She was sitting beside a much younger Daniel.

And in her hands was the same small red motorcycle Emily now carried.

I understood immediately.

“That’s Grace,” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Yeah.”

Emily stared at the photograph.

“She was pretty.”

“She sure was.”

Daniel knelt beside her.

“Grace loved collecting these little motorcycles.”

He opened the display case.

“She used to say that someday she’d have an entire garage full of them.”

Emily smiled.

“That’s funny.”

Then Daniel showed her a small plaque.

It read:

GRACE BROOKS MEMORIAL FUND

He explained that the charity event had been renamed in Grace’s honor.

The fund would help children with disabilities participate in accessible activities.

Emily looked at the plaque.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Does that mean Grace is helping other kids?”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s exactly what it means.”

My daughter thought carefully.

Then she reached for the little red motorcycle in her pocket.

She placed it beside Grace’s photograph.

“Maybe she wants to share.”

Daniel stared at the small toy.

His expression changed.

“Emily, sweetheart, you don’t have to give it back.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“But it’s Grace’s. And she should be here too.”

Daniel picked up the little motorcycle.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

Then he gently placed it back in Emily’s hand.

“Grace is here, sweetheart.”

He touched his heart.

“Right here.”

Emily leaned forward and hugged him.

I turned away because I couldn’t stop crying.

And around us, men who looked strong enough to lift entire motorcycles were wiping tears from their faces.
