PART 15 – Daniel Finally Named the Person Behind the Crash, but His Confession Revealed Why He Had Betrayed Everyone to Keep Me Alive

Daniel descended the last step.

Nobody moved toward him.

He looked exhausted.

There was dried blood near his collar and a cut along his cheek.

Jonah watched him carefully.

"You were with Claire."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"On the night of the crash."

"Yes."

I held up the photograph.

"You lied."

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because the truth would have put you in danger."

I shook my head.

"That explanation is getting old."

Daniel looked at me.

"I know."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Tell her."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"The person who ordered the crash was Samuel."

I frowned.

"He's dead."

"No."

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"Samuel survived."

Thomas stared at him.

"Where?"

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"He's the man who was in the house tonight."

I thought of the voice upstairs.

The person who had called Daniel.

The person Thomas feared.

The man Edward had warned us about.

I looked at the stairs.

"He's here."

Daniel nodded.

"He's been here for years."

Jonah stepped forward.

"Where?"

Daniel pointed toward the wall.

"Behind the archive."

We found another passage.

It led beneath the old study.

Daniel explained that Samuel had used the property network to hide his identity. After the crash, he assumed Thomas was dead and began consolidating the remaining assets.

But there was a problem.

The children.

The trust prevented him from taking everything.

So he needed us separated.

He needed Jonah hidden.

He needed me to believe I was an only child.

And he needed Thomas to remain dead.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why did you help him?"

"I didn't."

"You worked for Claire."

"To get information."

"What information?"

"Where Jonah had been taken."

Daniel explained that Claire had recruited him because she believed he knew where Thomas kept the ledger. He agreed because he was trying to find Jonah before Samuel did.

"I thought if I found him first, I could protect both of you."

I looked at Jonah.

He nodded slowly.

"That's what he told me."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Samuel had someone watching you."

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Your doctor."

The room seemed to shift.

"My doctor?"

"After your mother died, Samuel arranged for someone to monitor your appointments."

I remembered the physician who had always asked strange questions about my family.

Questions I had thought were ordinary.

Daniel continued.

"I couldn't risk you knowing."

I looked down.

For years, I had believed my uncle's secrecy meant he didn't trust me.

Now I understood that he had been trying to keep me invisible.

It didn't excuse everything.

But it changed the shape of it.

Jonah asked, "Where is Samuel now?"

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

"Upstairs."

Thomas picked up the key marked 17.

"What does this open?"

Daniel looked at it.

"The archive vault."

"Where?"

"The old study."

We climbed the stairs.

The farmhouse was silent.

The kitchen door stood open.

The front door was closed.

Nobody waited outside.

Daniel led us into the study.

He moved the desk.

Underneath was a metal plate.

He inserted the key.

A section of floor opened.

Inside was a vault.

There were no documents.

Only a chair.

And a telephone.

The phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Daniel answered.

A voice said, "You finally brought them."

Daniel hung up.

"He's at Cedar Hill."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he wants the original recording."

I held the cassette.

"Then let's give it to him."

Thomas grabbed my wrist.

"No."

I pulled free.

"He wants proof."

"He wants to destroy it."

"Then we'll make copies first."

Daniel looked at me.

"That's what your mother intended."

We returned to the archive room.

The old computer still worked.

Daniel connected the recorder.

We made digital copies of both cassettes.

Then he uploaded them to several secure accounts.

I watched the progress bar.

For the first time, I felt the evidence was no longer trapped in a box.

My mother had planned for this.

She had known one day we might need more than courage.

We needed witnesses.

When the upload finished, Daniel closed the laptop.

"Now we can go."

Marcus looked at him.

"Where?"

"Cedar Hill."

Ruth shook her head.

"That's where he wants you."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"Then why go?"

"Because Samuel has something we need."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Jonah's original birth record."

Jonah stiffened.

"Why?"

"Because it proves the trust belongs to both of you."

I remembered my mother's photograph.

Two children.

One trust.

Half each.

The last piece of the legal puzzle.

Without it, Samuel could claim the documents were fabricated.

With it, the entire scheme could be proven.

We left the farmhouse.

The road to Cedar Hill was empty.

Halfway there, Daniel received a message.

He showed it to me.

*Bring the recording. Come without police.**

Below it was another line.

*If you don't, your brother disappears again.**

I looked at Jonah.

He didn't seem surprised.

"He's bluffing."

"How do you know?"

"Because if he had me, he wouldn't need to threaten you."

Daniel looked at him.

"You're right."

Thomas drove.

Marcus sat beside him.

Ruth and I were in back with Jonah.

Nobody spoke.

When the farmhouse appeared ahead, every light was off.

Thomas stopped the car.

Daniel looked at us.

"Stay together."

We walked inside.

A lamp came on.

A man sat in my father's old chair.

Samuel Avery.

He looked older than the photograph.

But he was unmistakably the same man.

He smiled.

"Thomas."

My father stepped forward.

"You should have stayed dead."

Samuel laughed.

"I tried."

His eyes moved to me.

Then Jonah.

"So these are the children."

I felt Jonah's hand close around mine.

Samuel smiled again.

"You look exactly like your mother."

Then he looked at Thomas.

"And you look exactly like the man who betrayed me."

Thomas answered quietly.

"You betrayed yourself."

Samuel's smile disappeared.

He pointed toward the table.

"Put the recording down."

I placed the cassette there.

Samuel reached for it.

Before his fingers touched it, the lights came on.

Police entered through the side doors.

Samuel froze.

Daniel looked at me.

"You uploaded everything."

I nodded.

Samuel stared at us.

Then he smiled.

"You think this ends tonight."

I looked at him.

"No."

I glanced at Jonah.

"It ends when the truth belongs to everyone."

Samuel's expression finally broke.

But before the officers reached him, he said one last thing.

"Ask your father what he did to Claire."

Thomas went pale.

Daniel looked at him.

And I knew there was still one secret left.
