PART 3 TITLE: THE TINY RED MOTORCYCLE

Daniel looked toward the empty chair beside Emily.

“Mind if I sit for a minute?”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

He pulled the chair closer and sat down.

Even seated, he seemed enormous.

Emily watched him carefully.

“Did Grace have her own motorcycle?”

Daniel laughed softly.

“She wanted one.”

“Did you buy her one?”

“Something like that.”

He reached into a pocket of his leather vest.

Then he stopped.

His fingers remained inside the pocket for several seconds.

I noticed his expression change.

It was as though he was deciding whether to share something precious.

Finally, he pulled out a small object.

It was wrapped in a faded blue cloth.

Emily leaned forward.

“What’s that?”

Daniel slowly unfolded the fabric.

Inside was a tiny red motorcycle.

It was a beautiful miniature model, with chrome handlebars, black wheels, and a little silver engine.

One mirror was slightly crooked.

The red paint was scratched near the fuel tank.

But it was obvious someone had cared for it.

Emily gasped.

“Oh, wow!”

Daniel smiled.

“Pretty neat, huh?”

“Is that a real motorcycle?”

“A model of one.”

“Does it work?”

“The wheels turn.”

He carefully rolled it across his palm.

Emily watched with wide eyes.

“That’s the coolest toy I’ve ever seen.”

Daniel looked down at the motorcycle.

“Grace thought so too.”

I saw tears gathering in his eyes again.

“She gave this to me on my birthday.”

Emily’s expression softened.

“Your daughter bought it?”

“Her mom helped her.”

He turned the little motorcycle over.

“Grace saved her allowance for weeks. She wanted to give me something I could keep in my pocket whenever I rode.”

Emily looked fascinated.

“Did you keep it with you?”

“Every single day.”

He gently touched the scratched red paint.

“Even after she was gone.”

I felt a lump forming in my throat.

Daniel had carried that tiny motorcycle for years.

Not because it was expensive.

Not because it was valuable to anyone else.

But because it was one of the last things his little girl had given him.

Then Emily held out her hand.

“Can I see it?”

Daniel looked at the motorcycle.

For one brief moment, he hesitated.

Then he placed it gently into her palm.

“Of course, sweetheart.”

Emily’s entire face lit up.

She turned it carefully between her fingers.

“Mommy, look!”

I smiled.

“It’s beautiful, baby.”

She held the motorcycle close to her face.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Do you think Grace would let me play with it?”

The giant biker pressed his lips together.

And a tear slipped down his cheek.

“I think,” he whispered, “she would have liked that very much.”
