The recording was sent to the appropriate legal professionals for authentication and review.
Daniel warned us not to assume that every statement on the tape proved wrongdoing.
Context mattered.
The speakers' identities had to be confirmed, the recording's history established, and the conversation compared with the written records.
But the tape provided a new lead.
An independent investigator began reviewing the disputed transactions.
Several former property owners were contacted.
Some remembered signing agreements they did not fully understand.
Others had been told their land was needed for public improvements, only to discover that private developments appeared there later.
Their accounts were not identical.
Some transfers appeared legitimate.
Others raised serious questions.
The investigator began separating documented facts from recollections and assumptions.
Meanwhile, Victoria's lawyers asked to inspect the documents we had recovered.
Daniel agreed to arrange a formal exchange under appropriate conditions.
Victoria herself called me.
"You have no idea what you're doing," she said.
I felt my hands tighten around the phone.
"Then explain it to me."
"Your father was not the saint you imagine."
"I don't imagine anything. I want evidence."
She was silent.
Then she said, "If you continue, you may destroy more than my family's reputation."
I thought about the families listed in the ledger.
"Maybe your family's reputation should depend on what actually happened."
She ended the call.
For the first time, I wasn't afraid of her anger.
I was afraid of how much truth remained undiscovered.
