Part 8 : The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, nobody moved.

My husband stared at the photograph of his father.

“That’s impossible.”

Ramirez lowered the phone.

“We’ve confirmed the image was taken yesterday.”

“My father died five years ago.”

“Then someone has been pretending to be dead.”

Lily looked between us.

“Why would Grandpa do that?”

My husband didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked to the window.

His hands were trembling.

“I need to tell you something.”

I knew from his voice that whatever came next would change everything.

“Twenty years ago, before Lily was born, my father offered Claire money.”

“For what?”

“To give up custody.”

Lily’s face tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he didn’t want Claire raising you.”

“Why not?”

My husband swallowed.

“Because he knew about the trust.”

The room went silent.

“He knew Lily would inherit the money,” I said.

“Yes.”

“How much did he know?”

“Everything.”

He sat down.

“My father helped establish the account. He knew the conditions. He knew Lily would gain control when she turned eighteen.”

“So he wanted the money.”

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

“He wanted control of the company that managed it.”

Ramirez leaned forward.

“Was Daniel involved?”

My husband nodded.

“Daniel worked for my father.”

Lily whispered:

“So everyone knew about me?”

“Not everyone.”

My husband looked at her.

“Claire knew. My father knew. Daniel knew. And eventually Rachel found out.”

I felt sick.

“Then why did Claire leave?”

“Because my father threatened her.”

“With what?”

“My life.”

I stared at him.

“He told her that if she refused to disappear, he’d destroy me.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“And you never knew?”

“No.”

“Not until now?”

He shook his head.

“I thought Claire left because she didn’t want us anymore.”

The guilt on his face was unbearable.

Then Ramirez’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, he looked at us.

“They found Daniel.”

“Where?”

“At your father’s house.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“And my father?”

Ramirez hesitated.

“Also alive.”

My husband closed his eyes.

“Let’s go.”

The old house sat at the end of a long country road.

Police surrounded it.

We stayed behind the vehicles while officers entered.

Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty.

Finally, Ramirez came outside.

“Your father wants to speak to you.”

My husband looked stunned.

“Alone?”

“With police present.”

He nodded.

“I’ll go.”

I grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.”

He looked at me.

“I have to.”

“I don’t like this.”

“Neither do I.”

He kissed my forehead.

Then he walked inside.

Lily and I waited in the car.

Five minutes later, we heard shouting.

Then a gunshot.

Lily screamed.

Police officers rushed from the house.

“Stay in the car!”

I pulled Lily against me.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Eventually, Ramirez came running toward us.

“Your husband is safe.”

I almost collapsed with relief.

“What happened?”

He opened the car door.

“Your father-in-law confessed.”

“What?”

“He admitted he knew Claire was being followed.”

My heart pounded.

“He hired Daniel.”

“To kill her?”

Ramirez shook his head.

“At first, no.”

He paused.

“To frighten her.”

“Why?”

“To force her to leave Lily.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“And the surgery?”

“That’s where things changed.”

Ramirez looked at Lily.

“Rachel discovered Claire was going to tell you everything.”

“So she killed her?”

“She arranged the overdose.”

Lily began crying.

“But why?”

“Because Claire had proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Ramirez handed me a file.

Inside were bank transfers.

Payments from my father-in-law to Rachel.

Payments from Rachel to Daniel.

And one final payment.

Made only six weeks ago.

To my husband.

I stared at the number.

“What?”

Ramirez nodded.

“Your husband received money.”

I felt the world stop.

“No.”

“He didn’t know where it came from.”

“What was it for?”

“An account Claire had opened.”

I looked toward the house.

My husband came outside.

He looked exhausted.

When he saw the file in my hands, he stopped.

“You know.”

“Did you take money from them?”

“No.”

“Then explain this.”

He looked at the document.

His face went pale.

“I didn’t know.”

“How could you not know?”

“Because I never opened that account.”

Ramirez stepped forward.

“That’s what we thought.”

He held up another document.

“The account was opened using your husband’s identity.”

My husband stared at it.

Then at me.

“I swear to you, Emily…”

Before he could finish, Lily whispered:

“Mom.”

I turned.

She was holding something she’d found beneath the car seat.

A small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Inside was a single sentence.

Your father isn’t the one who betrayed you.

Then another line underneath:

But your mother wasn’t the one who died.

I froze.

I read it again.

My hands began to shake.

Lily looked at me.

“Mom… what does that mean?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because suddenly, one impossible thought had entered my mind.

What if the woman who died on that operating table…

wasn’t Claire?
