Part 9 : The Woman Who Died

I read the sentence again.

But your mother wasn’t the one who died.

My first instinct was to dismiss it.

A cruel trick.

Another attempt to confuse us.

But then I remembered the photograph Claire had sent.

The medical records.

Rachel’s involvement.

The forged documents.

The secret accounts.

Everything had been built on lies.

“Ramirez,” I said.

He took the note from my hand.

His expression changed.

“Where did you find this?”

“Under the car seat.”

He turned toward the house.

“Get the medical examiner on the phone.”

My husband stepped closer.

“What are you thinking?”

Ramirez looked at him.

“That we may have been investigating the wrong death.”

Two hours later, we were sitting in a hospital conference room.

A medical examiner placed a file on the table.

“The woman identified as Claire Mercer did undergo surgery.”

I held my breath.

“Was it Claire?”

The examiner hesitated.

“We can’t confirm that.”

Lily gripped my hand.

“What do you mean?”

“The body was badly burned in a post-surgical electrical fire.”

My husband stared at him.

“You said she died on the operating table.”

“That’s what the hospital reported.”

“Then why wasn’t there an identification?”

“There was.”

“By whom?”

The examiner opened another file.

“Rachel.”

My stomach dropped.

“Rachel identified the body?”

“Yes.”

“And there was no DNA test?”

“Not immediately.”

“Why?”

The examiner looked uncomfortable.

“Rachel produced identification documents and medical records.”

I looked at Ramirez.

“Forged.”

“Most likely.”

The examiner nodded.

“We have since obtained DNA from Claire’s biological relatives.”

“And?”

He slid a report across the table.

“The remains do not match Claire.”

Lily stopped breathing.

“So she’s alive?”

“We don’t know.”

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in months, I allowed myself to hope.

Then Ramirez said:

“We found something else.”

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a woman walking through an airport.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Claire.

Lily gasped.

“Mom.”

The timestamp was from three days after the supposed surgery.

Claire was alive.

And she was carrying a suitcase.

Beside her was a man.

Daniel.

My husband stared at the photograph.

“Where are they going?”

Ramirez answered quietly.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

Then Lily noticed something.

“Wait.”

She pointed at the suitcase.

There’s a sticker on it.”

We zoomed in.

A small red label.

Phnom Penh.

Ramirez frowned.

“That’s a long way from here.”

My husband looked at me.

“Why would Claire go there?”

Before I could answer, Ramirez’s phone rang.

He listened.

Then his expression became grave.

“We found Rachel.”

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

“Again?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“She wasn’t trying to leave.”

“What was she doing?”

“Waiting.”

“For whom?”

Ramirez looked at Lily.

“For Claire.”

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then I heard a woman’s voice.

Weak.

Shaking.

But unmistakable.

“Emily?”

My heart stopped.

“Claire?”

A breath.

Then:

“Please don’t trust anyone.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Are you safe?”

“No.”

I stood up.

“Where is Lily?”

“With me?”

Claire’s voice trembled.

“No.”

A pause.

“That’s why I’m calling.”

“What happened?”

“I made a terrible mistake.”

“What?”

“I thought I could protect her.”

Her voice broke.

“But I never realized they were already inside your family.”

I looked at my husband.

“What do you mean?”

Claire whispered:

“Your husband’s father isn’t the only person who knows about the money.”

“Who else?”

Silence.

Then Claire said:

“Your husband.”

My blood ran cold.

“No.”

“I didn’t want to believe it either.”

“Claire, you’re wrong.”

“I hope I am.”

The line suddenly crackled.

Then a man’s voice came through.

“Claire.”

She gasped.

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Lily was crying.

My husband looked devastated.

Then his own phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Bring Lily to the old house.

Come alone.

Or Claire dies for real this time.
