Rachel stood beneath the cemetery lights, rain running down her face.
The gun in her hand was steady.
“Give me the bracelet.”
Lily clutched her wrist.
I stepped in front of her.
“No.”
Rachel’s eyes narrowed.
“You still don’t understand, Emily.”
“Then explain it.”
She smiled.
“Gladly.”
She pointed the gun toward the old mausoleum.
“Daniel thinks the trust is about money.”
Claire shook her head.
“It isn’t.”
Rachel laughed.
“Of course it is.”
“No,” Claire said. “It’s about what the money can expose.”
Rachel’s smile disappeared.
Claire looked at Lily.
“Your great-grandfather didn’t leave you a fortune because he wanted you to be rich.”
“Then why?”
“Because he knew Daniel would eventually come for it.”
She took a breath.
“The trust contains evidence of every crime Daniel committed.”
Rachel looked at the bracelet.
“Which is why I need it.”
Ramirez raised his weapon.
“Put the gun down.”
Rachel laughed.
“You’ll shoot me?”
“No.”
A voice came from behind us.
Daniel.
He stepped out of the darkness.
“Because he needs me alive.”
Rachel spun around.
“You!”
Daniel looked at the bracelet.
“Give it to me.”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“You said you’d give me half.”
“I changed my mind.”
She raised her gun toward him.
“You always do.”
Daniel smiled.
“That’s why you were never getting anything.”
Rachel’s hand trembled.
“You used me.”
“Of course.”
She fired.
The shot missed Daniel and struck the mausoleum wall.
Police immediately tackled Rachel.
Daniel turned and ran.
Ramirez shouted:
“After him!”
Officers chased him.
I grabbed Lily.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded.
Claire pulled her close.
For a moment, everything was quiet.
Then Lily looked down at her bracelet.
The tiny memory card was gone.
She screamed.
“Mom!”
“What?”
“It’s gone!”
I searched the ground.
Nothing.
Rachel had taken it.
But she wasn’t holding it.
Ramirez returned seconds later.
“Where is Rachel?”
“In custody.”
“Did she have the card?”
“No.”
I looked toward the mausoleum.
Then I understood.
“Daniel.”
He’d taken it during the chaos.
Ramirez cursed.
“We need to move.”
We followed the trail toward the old mausoleum.
The door was open.
Inside, the old man lay unconscious.
Daniel was nowhere.
But a laptop sat on the floor.
Its screen showed one file.
TRUST_FINAL.zip
Ramirez stepped closer.
“Don’t touch it.”
The file began uploading automatically.
A progress bar appeared.
12%
Then:
27%
43%
My husband stared at the screen.
“What is it doing?”
Claire whispered:
“Sending everything to the public.”
The progress continued.
68%
Daniel suddenly appeared on a second screen.
He was smiling.
“You wanted the truth?”
He looked directly at Lily.
“Here it is.”
Documents began appearing.
Bank accounts.
Payments.
Names.
Photographs.
Hospital records.
And then something that made Claire gasp.
A birth certificate.
Not Lily’s.
Mine.
Daniel’s voice came through the speakers.
“Emily Carter was never supposed to know she was Lily’s biological mother.”
My husband looked at me.
I stared at the screen.
Then another document appeared.
DNA TEST — EMILY CARTER / LILY CARTER
99.98% probability of biological relationship.
Lily started crying.
“I knew.”
I turned toward her.
“You knew?”
“Not before.”
She touched my hand.
“But I always knew you were my mom.”
The upload reached:
100%.
Daniel’s smile vanished.
“You have five minutes.”
The screen went black.
Ramirez looked at me.
“Five minutes until what?”
Claire’s face went white.
“He isn’t talking about the files.”
“What then?”
She pointed toward the cemetery entrance.
“He planted something.”
A distant siren began.
Then another.
Then another.
Ramirez’s radio crackled.
“Detective!”
He answered.
“Go ahead.”
“We have multiple reports of explosives near the courthouse, the bank, and the family company.”
Ramirez looked at Claire.
“How many?”
“Three confirmed.”
My husband whispered:
“He’s trying to destroy everything.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the dark road where Daniel had disappeared.
“He’s trying to make it look like I did it.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because if he can convince everyone I’m responsible, the trust will be frozen.”
“And Lily?”
Claire took her daughter’s hand.
“She’ll be declared unfit to inherit.”
My stomach dropped.
“Who would control it?”
Claire looked at my husband.
“Until Lily turns eighteen…”
She hesitated.
“The court would appoint a guardian.”
I understood.
“Daniel wants himself appointed.”
Claire nodded.
“And there’s only one person who can stop him.”
I looked at Lily.
“Who?”
Claire squeezed her hand.
“You.”
Lily looked confused.
“Me?”
Claire nodded.
“You’re the only person the trust recognizes.”
Then the cemetery gates slammed shut.
Every light went out.
And Daniel’s voice came through the darkness:
“Exactly.”
A red laser appeared on Lily’s chest.
Someone had a sniper rifle.
And a voice whispered from the darkness:
“Now, let’s see how much you’re willing to sacrifice for your daughter.”
