The red dot on Lily’s chest didn’t move.
I didn’t think.
I threw myself in front of her.
“Emily!” Ramirez shouted.
A shot cracked through the cemetery.
The bullet struck the stone beside my shoulder.
Officers fired toward the darkness, but whoever had the rifle was already moving.
Ramirez pulled Lily behind a mausoleum.
“Stay down!”
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.”
“You almost—”
“I’m fine.”
My husband looked toward the cemetery gates.
“We need to get Lily out.”
Ramirez shook his head.
“The gates are locked electronically.”
“Then unlock them.”
“I’m trying.”
His radio crackled.
The same distorted voice came through.
“You have four minutes.”
My husband shouted:
“Daniel!”
A laugh answered.
“Four minutes until the explosives go off.”
Ramirez looked at me.
“He’s giving us a choice.”
“What choice?”
“The courthouse, the bank, or the family company.”
I stared at him.
“We can only reach one.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“He’s lying.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Daniel always gives people three choices.”
She looked toward the cemetery gates.
“And all three are traps.”
Ramirez frowned.
“Then what is the real target?”
Claire answered:
“Lily.”
My daughter looked at her.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel doesn’t need the money.”
Claire pointed toward the mausoleum.
“He needs you to sign something.”
“What?”
“The trust release.”
I remembered the documents.
“The beneficiary can’t transfer the money without Lily’s consent.”
Claire nodded.
“Exactly.”
A phone suddenly rang.
Lily’s phone.
Everyone froze.
She answered.
Daniel’s voice came through.
“Lily.”
She said nothing.
“Your mother told you the truth.”
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because you have something I need.”
“The bracelet?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Your signature.”
Lily’s face hardened.
“I’ll never give it to you.”
Daniel laughed.
“You will.”
“Why?”
“Because I have your father.”
My husband froze.
“What?”
Daniel continued.
“He’s alive.”
We all looked at the old man’s body inside the mausoleum.
The man we thought was unconscious.
His eyes suddenly opened.
And he smiled.
Lily screamed.
“Grandpa!”
The old man stood.
He wasn’t injured.
The blood on his shirt was fake.
He pulled a gun.
Ramirez immediately raised his weapon.
“Drop it!”
The old man smiled.
“You’re too late.”
He pointed at Lily.
“Come here.”
My husband stepped between them.
“Don’t touch her.”
The old man looked at his son.
“You always were sentimental.”
Then he fired.
My husband collapsed.
“Dad!”
Lily screamed.
I dropped beside my husband.
There was blood.
Too much blood.
“Call an ambulance!”
Ramirez shouted into his radio.
The old man grabbed Lily.
She fought.
“Let me go!”
I lunged toward them.
But the old man shoved Lily toward the car waiting beyond the cemetery gate.
Claire ran after them.
“Take me instead!”
He stopped.
“Gladly.”
He grabbed Claire too.
The car sped away.
I stayed beside my husband.
Ramirez knelt beside him.
“He’s alive.”
I could barely breathe.
“Then go.”
“What?”
“Go after Lily.”
Ramirez looked at me.
“I’ll stay with him.”
“No.”
My husband grabbed my hand.
“Bring her home.”
I nodded.
Then I stood.
And ran.
The chase ended at an abandoned warehouse near the river.
Ramirez and two officers followed.
Inside, Lily was tied to a chair.
Claire was on the floor nearby.
Daniel stood behind them.
Rachel stood beside him.
And my husband’s father watched from the shadows.
Daniel held out a document.
“Lily.”
She glared at him.
“Sign.”
“No.”
“Your father is dying.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“You shot him.”
“Accidentally.”
“You don’t care.”
Daniel smiled.
“You’re learning.”
I stepped into the warehouse.
“Let her go.”
Daniel turned.
“Emily.”
He smiled.
“I knew you’d come.”
“Release her.”
“Sign the document.”
I looked at Lily.
She shook her head.
Don’t.
I understood.
She had a plan.
Daniel pushed the document toward her.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Lily looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“What’s the one thing you always told me?”
I understood.
I smiled.
“Never sign anything you haven’t read.”
Lily nodded.
Daniel frowned.
“What are you doing?”
She began reading the document aloud.
Then she stopped.
“Wait.”
She looked at him.
“This isn’t a transfer.”
Daniel froze.
“It’s a confession.”
His face changed.
Lily smiled.
“You made a mistake.”
She held up the paper.
“You wrote that you control the trust.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“What?”
Lily continued.
“And you admitted that you caused the surgery.”
Daniel lunged.
Ramirez shouted:
“Now!”
Police stormed the warehouse.
Daniel ran.
Rachel tried to follow.
The old man raised his gun.
Then Claire stepped between him and Lily.
“Enough.”
He lowered the weapon.
For the first time, he looked defeated.
Daniel reached the exit.
I grabbed his arm.
He turned.
And whispered:
“You think this ends here?”
I looked him in the eyes.
“No.”
I tightened my grip.
“It ends with you in prison.”
Police arrested him.
Rachel.
And the old man.
Three generations of secrets finally exposed.
But as they were taken away, Daniel looked back at me.
He smiled.
“You still don’t know why Claire chose you.”
I frowned.
“What?”
He laughed.
“Ask her.”
Then he disappeared through the doors.
I turned toward Claire.
She was crying.
Lily stood beside her.
And I knew there was still one secret left.
The secret Claire had been protecting for fourteen years.
The secret that had nothing to do with money.
And everything to do with why I was chosen to become Lily’s mother.
