Part 20 : Why Claire Chose Me

The warehouse emptied slowly.

Police cars took Daniel, Rachel, and my husband’s father away.

An ambulance carried my husband to the hospital.

And finally, it was just me, Lily, and Claire.

I looked at Claire.

“Tell me.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Fourteen years ago, I didn’t choose you randomly.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

She took a shaky breath.

“Your mother and I knew each other.”

I frowned.

“My mother?”

Claire nodded.

“Before you were born.”

I stared at her.

“My mother died when I was young.”

“I know.”

“How did you know her?”

Claire looked at Lily.

“She was my closest friend.”

I couldn’t speak.

Claire continued.

“Your mother knew about the Mercer family.”

“How?”

“Because she worked for your great-grandfather.”

My mind raced.

“What did she do?”

“She was his accountant.”

Claire reached into her coat and pulled out a photograph.

It showed my mother standing beside an elderly man.

Behind them was a younger Claire.

And a baby.

Lily.

I stared at the photograph.

“I’ve never seen this.”

“Your mother took it.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew she was dying.”

My hands began to shake.

“What did she know?”

Claire looked at me.

“She knew Daniel had stolen money from the family.”

“And the trust?”

“She helped create it.”

I stared at her.

“My mother created Lily’s trust?”

“She helped design it.”

Claire’s voice softened.

“She wanted the money protected from Daniel.”

“But why would it eventually go to me?”

“Because your mother knew something else.”

“What?”

“She knew you would have a daughter.”

I laughed nervously.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire shook her head.

“Your mother had seen the records.”

“What records?”

“The family lineage.”

She handed me another document.

At the top was a family tree.

My name was highlighted.

So was Lily’s.

And beneath Lily’s name was a handwritten note:

If Emily has a daughter, she will be the final beneficiary.

I stared at the page.

“How could she know?”

Claire smiled sadly.

“She didn’t know who your daughter would be.”

She touched Lily’s shoulder.

“She just knew you would be the one person Daniel couldn’t manipulate.”

I looked at Lily.

“So my mother planned all of this?”

“Not all of it.”

Claire shook her head.

“She planned the protection.”

“The rest?”

“The rest was Daniel.”

I sat down.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The bracelet.

The trust.

The letters.

Claire’s disappearance.

Even my marriage.

But there was one question left.

“Why did you let me believe I was only Lily’s stepmother?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because if Daniel knew you were her biological mother, he’d have killed you.”

I looked at Lily.

“All those years…”

“You were her mother in every way that mattered,” Claire said.

Lily took my hand.

“I always knew.”

I smiled through tears.

“How?”

She shrugged.

“Because nobody else knew how I liked my pancakes.”

We laughed.

For the first time in months, it felt like we could breathe.

Then my phone rang.

The hospital.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A nurse spoke.

“Your husband is awake.”

I nearly cried with relief.

“Is he okay?”

“He lost a lot of blood, but he’s stable.”

I closed my eyes.

“Thank God.”

Then the nurse added:

“There’s something strange.”

“What?”

“He keeps asking about Claire.”

I looked at Claire.

“She’s here.”

“No.”

The nurse hesitated.

“He says there’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“He says the man who shot him wasn’t your father-in-law.”

My heart stopped.

I looked at Claire.

She went pale.

“Who was it?”

The nurse answered:

“Your husband says the shooter was Daniel’s son.”

I frowned.

“Daniel doesn’t have a son.”

Claire whispered:

“Yes, he does.”

I stared at her.

“Who?”

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

And finally whispered:

“The man you’ve been calling Officer Ramirez.”

I froze.

The real Ramirez had been standing beside us.

He heard it too.

His face went white.

Then he slowly reached for his badge.

And turned it over.

The name on the back wasn’t Ramirez.

It was:

Michael Mercer.

Daniel’s son.

The man who had been helping us investigate everything…

had been part of the conspiracy from the beginning.
