PART 8 – My Name Was on Derek’s Escape Ticket, and the Plan Revealed What He Intended to Do With Me Before Leaving Forever

I stared at the passenger list.

My name sat beneath Daniel Hale's.

Claire Morgan.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.

“I didn't buy that ticket.”

Harris was already shaking his head.

“I know.”

“Then how is my name on it?”

“We'll find out.”

He called the airline.

The reservation had been made through an encrypted travel agency.

The credit card belonged to a company linked to one of Derek's shell corporations.

The destination was Buenos Aires.

The departure was the following night.

And the reservation was still active.

I looked at Natalie.

“Why would he put my name on the ticket?”

She looked frightened.

“He wanted you to leave with him.”

“No.”

“Not because he wanted you safe.”

I already knew.

“He wanted me under his control.”

She nodded.

“He needed you alive.”

The words sounded wrong.

“Why?”

“Because the property is in your name.”

Harris looked at the documents.

“He can't transfer it without you.”

Natalie nodded.

“And if you're outside the country with him, he can pressure you into signing.”

I understood.

The guardianship plan had failed.

The police had the evidence.

The insurance companies were investigating.

Derek needed another way to obtain the property.

He planned to take me with him.

The thought made my skin crawl.

Harris canceled the ticket through the airline's security division.

But the moment he did, his phone rang.

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“Derek knows.”

“How?”

“The reservation was canceled from his end before we canceled it.”

I felt a chill.

“He's watching us.”

“Yes.”

Harris turned to the agents.

“Lock down the house.”

That night, I stayed in a secure location.

I didn't sleep.

At 3:06 in the morning, I received a message.

You were always difficult to control.

I stared at the words.

Then another message appeared.

You could have had a comfortable life.

I didn't answer.

A third message came.

Instead, you chose to dig.

Harris told me not to respond.

But I wanted him to know I wasn't afraid anymore.

I typed one sentence.

You never knew me.

The reply came immediately.

I knew enough.

Then a photograph appeared.

It was me standing outside my father's house when I was nineteen.

I had never seen the photograph.

My hands began to shake.

Harris took the phone.

“This was taken before your marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Who took it?”

“I don't know.”

The photograph proved Derek had been watching me long before I met him.

Then another image appeared.

Me at twenty-two.

Another at twenty-six.

Another at twenty-nine.

There were dozens.

Years of surveillance.

Harris's face hardened.

“He's been collecting these for a long time.”

The final photograph showed me standing beside Derek on our wedding day.

Across the bottom was a handwritten note.

Phase One complete.

I couldn't look anymore.

I handed the phone to Harris.

The next morning, federal investigators executed warrants against several companies connected to Derek.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Property was seized.

Records were collected.

The investigation uncovered more than we expected.

Derek had been involved in an insurance fraud network spanning several states.

My father's old company had been one of its earliest fronts.

After my father's death, Derek had expanded it.

The fake death had been designed to protect him from an investigation that was beginning to close in.

But it also created another opportunity.

My inheritance.

My house.

My identity.

My trust.

Everything could become part of his escape.

The police eventually found Derek's secondary vehicle abandoned outside Denver.

Inside was a suitcase.

Clothes.

Cash.

A passport.

And a small notebook.

The notebook contained names.

Some were crossed out.

Some had dollar amounts beside them.

My name appeared last.

Beside it was a date.

Tomorrow.

Harris showed it to me.

“He was planning something.”

I stared at the page.

“What?”

“We don't know yet.”

Then an investigator entered.

“We found another location.”

It was a storage unit.

The key from my father's box opened it.

Inside were boxes of documents.

There were also photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Derek had kept records of everyone he had manipulated.

Employees.

Business partners.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Family members.

And me.

One folder was labeled CLAIRE — FINAL.

Harris opened it.

Inside were documents prepared for my disappearance.

Not death.

Disappearance.

There was a fake passport.

A new identity.

A photograph of me altered digitally.

Travel documents.

And a statement claiming I had voluntarily left the country.

I stared at the papers.

“He was going to make it look like I ran away.”

Harris nodded.

“That would solve the last problem.”

“What problem?”

“If you're gone, no one can challenge the property transfer.”

I felt sick.

The plan was horrifyingly simple.

He would either force me to sign.

Or make it appear that I had left voluntarily.

Then he would disappear.

The investigators found something else.

A recording.

Derek had recorded a conversation with Dr. Evans.

I listened.

Evans asked, “What if she refuses?”

Derek replied, “She won't.”

“And if she remembers?”

“She won't.”

“She's stronger than you think.”

“I know her weaknesses.”

I closed my eyes.

The recording continued.

Evans asked, “And Natalie?”

“She'll do what she's told.”

“What if she talks?”

Derek laughed.

“She won't.”

I opened my eyes.

The recording ended.

Harris looked at me.

“That's enough for conspiracy charges.”

I nodded.

But there was still one thing we didn't know.

Where was Derek?

The answer came later that afternoon.

A traffic camera captured him entering a private airport under the name Daniel Hale.

His flight had been scheduled for midnight.

Federal agents moved immediately.

We drove to the airport with the lights off and sirens silent.

The terminal was nearly empty.

Agents spread through the building.

I stayed inside the vehicle.

Then Harris returned.

“He's here.”

My heart started pounding.

“Have you arrested him?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“He has someone with him.”

I knew before he said the name.

“Who?”

Harris looked at me.

“Natalie.”

I stared at him.

“She went to him?”

“No.”

He paused.

“He took her.”

Everything inside me tightened.

Derek had found her.

He had taken my sister.

And if he had Natalie, he had one last piece of leverage.

Harris told me to stay in the vehicle.

I refused.

“Claire, this is not negotiable.”

“He will hurt her.”

“We have agents inside.”

“She knows things you don't.”

He hesitated.

Then he said, “You're staying behind me.”

We entered the terminal.

A voice came over the intercom.

“Claire.”

I froze.

Derek.

He was somewhere inside the building.

“Don't move.”

Harris raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

Derek spoke again.

“You wanted the truth.”

I looked toward the dark corridor.

“Let Natalie go.”

“She isn't the one I want.”

“Then what do you want?”

A pause.

Then he said,

“You.”

I felt the old fear rise.

But it was different now.

It no longer controlled me.

I stepped forward.

“I know what you did.”

“You know nothing.”

“I know about my father.”

Silence.

That got his attention.

I continued.

“I know about Daniel Hale.”

No response.

“I know about the insurance companies.”

Nothing.

“And I know you planned my disappearance.”

The silence stretched.

Then Derek laughed.

“You finally found the files.”

“Yes.”

“You should have left them alone.”

“You should have left me alone.”

A door opened somewhere ahead.

I heard Natalie cry out.

Then Derek spoke again.

“Come alone.”

Harris grabbed my arm.

I shook my head.

Derek continued.

“If anyone follows you, Natalie dies.”

I looked at Harris.

He whispered, “Don't.”

I knew what I had to do.

I stepped toward the corridor.

But before I could take another step, the lights went out.

The terminal fell completely dark.

Someone screamed.

A gunshot cracked through the building.

Then another.

And in the darkness, Derek whispered my name from somewhere only a few feet away.

“Claire.”

I turned toward the voice.

And realized he was much closer than any of us had expected.
