Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
"You said Nora was the fifth child."
"I said the records called her the fifth."
"Then what does that mean?"
Arthur opened his briefcase.
He removed a photocopy.
The document showed five names.
Jonah Ellis.
Mara Ellis.
Ella Ellis.
Nora Ellis.
Daniel Harper.
Five identities.
Four beneficiaries.
One false identity.
Daniel understood.
"Nora wasn't a beneficiary."
"No."
"She was a decoy."
"Yes."
"And I was the fifth child."
Arthur nodded.
"But why?"
"Because Ruth knew Samuel would search for her descendants."
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"She used me."
"No."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Ruth protected you."
"By turning me into someone else."
"Yes."
Daniel shook his head.
"That isn't protection."
Evelyn's voice broke.
"It was the only protection she had."
Mara touched Daniel's shoulder.
He moved away.
"I need the truth."
Arthur handed him another document.
This one was a birth record.
The mother's name was Ruth Ellis.
The father's name was Samuel Ellis.
The child was Daniel Ellis.
Daniel stared at it.
His hands began to shake.
"Why did I become Harper?"
Arthur answered.
"Because Samuel wanted the Ellis line erased."
"And Jonah?"
"Jonah agreed."
"Why?"
"Because Ruth trusted him."
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"And you?"
"I agreed too."
"Everyone agreed."
"Because you were one year old."
Daniel closed his eyes.
The anger was still there, but underneath it was something worse.
Grief for a childhood that had been real even if its paperwork had not.
He looked at the birth record again.
"Where is the original?"
Arthur answered.
"With Ruth."
"Then she's alive."
"Most likely."
"Where?"
"I told you. I don't know."
Clara interrupted.
"We're wasting time."
She pointed toward the road.
The headlights had moved.
Someone was coming through the trees.
Daniel folded the birth record.
"Where can we file?"
Arthur pointed toward the farmhouse.
"The old study has internet."
Daniel stared.
"This house has internet?"
"Satellite."
They hurried inside.
Arthur opened an old laptop.
The machine took nearly a minute to start.
Daniel watched the loading screen.
"How long?"
"Ten minutes."
"We don't have ten."
Arthur looked at him.
"Then make it count."
Ella placed the trust on the desk.
Daniel opened the filing system.
The original trust required signatures from all surviving beneficiaries.
Mara signed.
Ella signed.
Nora signed.
Daniel hesitated.
He looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
He signed.
The screen confirmed the filing.
*DOCUMENT RECEIVED.**
Daniel exhaled.
Then a warning appeared.
*SUPPLEMENTAL EVIDENCE REQUIRED.**
Arthur swore under his breath.
"What?"
"The original deed."
Daniel placed it on the scanner.
The machine began copying.
Outside, an engine roared.
The farmhouse shook.
Clara looked toward the window.
"They're here."
Arthur kept scanning.
"Thirty seconds."
Daniel looked at the door.
Mara locked it.
Nora stood beside her.
Ella moved the furniture against the entrance.
Evelyn held the cassette.
The scanner finished.
*UPLOAD COMPLETE.**
Arthur clicked submit.
The system accepted it.
Daniel stared.
"What happens now?"
Arthur said, "The transfers are frozen pending review."
"All of them?"
"Yes."
Daniel looked relieved.
Then the screen changed.
A new message appeared.
*TRUSTEE VERIFICATION REQUIRED.**
Arthur looked at Daniel.
"You have to verify your identity."
Daniel entered his information.
The system rejected it.
*IDENTITY CONFLICT.**
Daniel stared.
"Why?"
Arthur's face changed.
"Because your current legal identity doesn't match the original trust."
"Then what do I enter?"
"Your original name."
Daniel looked at the birth record.
Daniel Ellis.
He entered it.
The system accepted.
*TRUSTEE VERIFIED.**
The room fell silent.
Then another notification appeared.
*SUCCESSOR TRUSTEE ACTIVATED.**
Daniel leaned back.
He had spent his entire life believing Daniel Harper was his name.
Now the system had accepted another identity.
His father had left him a position he had never known existed.
The front door rattled.
Someone shouted outside.
"Daniel!"
Arthur looked frightened.
"Don't answer."
Daniel stared at the door.
The voice came again.
"Daniel Ellis!"
Evelyn went pale.
"Samuel."
The door rattled harder.
Daniel stood.
Samuel's voice came through the wood.
"You've made a terrible mistake."
Daniel walked toward the door.
"No."
He looked at the trust.
"I've finally made the first decision that belongs to me."
The pounding stopped.
A long silence followed.
Then Samuel said:
"Ask your mother what happened to Ruth."
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
She had gone completely still.
"Mom?"
Evelyn whispered:
"I thought she died."
Samuel laughed outside.
"You all thought wrong."
A car engine started.
Then another.
The vehicles pulled away.
Daniel opened the door.
The road was empty.
Arthur stared after them.
"They wanted you to know."
"Know what?"
"That Samuel still has access to something."
"What?"
Arthur looked at the trust.
"The original death certificate."
Daniel frowned.
"Why does that matter?"
Arthur answered:
"Because if Ruth is alive, the entire estate administration is fraudulent."
Daniel understood.
And suddenly the money was no longer the most important evidence.
A living woman could overturn everything.
